Constitution DayTo mark Constitution Day, the Department of History, ESLA, invites the university community to a compelling book discussion titled “Indian Constitution at 75.” The session will focus on Constitution of India: 75 Years of World’s Largest Democracy, offering a platform to reflect on India’s constitutional evolution, democratic values, and the meaning of justice in a changing nation.

The event will feature a keynote presentation by the author, followed by an interactive discussion and audience engagement.

About the Book

Constitution of India: 75 Years of World’s Largest Democracy provides an in-depth examination of India’s constitutional legacy, tracing its trajectory from the drafting process in the Constituent Assembly to its contemporary relevance.

The book explores:

  • The ideological debates shaping the Constitution
  • The emergence and evolution of the concept of justice during India’s independence movement
  • The successes and limitations of the Constitution in delivering social, economic, and political justice

Combining history with legal and political analysis, the book offers a nuanced, critical assessment of India’s democratic journey since 1950.

About the Author

Prof. V Krishna Ananth is a distinguished historian specialising in modern and contemporary India. Currently teaching at Sikkim University, Gangtok, he brings a multidisciplinary approach connecting history, law, and politics.

An alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), he previously worked with The Hindu as a political correspondent and editorial contributor. Alongside journalism, he practiced law at the Madras High Court and later transitioned to research and teaching.

His notable works include:

  • The Indian Constitution and Social Revolution: Right to Property Since Independence (2015)
