Integrating Traditions: A Symposium on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)

The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Cell at SRM University-AP is organising an insightful symposium titled “Integrating Traditions: A Symposium on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)”.

The symposium aims to explore the richness of Indian Knowledge Systems and their relevance in shaping contemporary discourse across sustainability, ecology, technology, culture, and education. Bringing together scholars and experts from diverse disciplines, the event will foster meaningful conversations on preserving indigenous wisdom while integrating it with modern innovation and research.

The session will commence with an introduction by Dr Aqsa, Coordinator, IKS Cell, SRM University-AP, followed by a series of expert talks. Dr Annapurna Mamidipudi, Researcher at the Technical University of Berlin, will speak on “Crafting Knowledge as Intellectual Property: Handloom Weaving in South India,” highlighting the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and intellectual heritage. Prof. Niraj Upadhyay from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering will discuss the “Contribution of Indian Knowledge System in the Area of the Built Environment and Computing,” offering perspectives on the influence of indigenous practices in modern technological frameworks.

Further enriching the symposium, Prof. Jayaseelan Murugaiyan from the Department of Biological Sciences will deliver a talk titled “Importance of Knowing Thyself – Understanding Traditional Knowledge in the Modern Era!”, focusing on the philosophical and scientific dimensions of traditional wisdom. Dr Bikku from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology will conclude the speaker sessions with insights on “Indigenous Ecological Knowledge Systems (IEKS),” emphasising the role of local ecological practices in sustainable living and environmental stewardship.

The event will also include an interactive Q&A session, encouraging participants to engage in thoughtful dialogue with the speakers and gain deeper insights into the evolving significance of Indian Knowledge Systems in the modern world.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 9, 11, 12, and 13, the symposium reflects SRM University-AP’s commitment to promoting inclusive education, innovation, sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and climate consciousness through interdisciplinary learning and research.
