The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising a Department Distinguished Lecture titled “Theory of Metamaterials: Lorentz and Floquet Approaches in the Context of Double-Negative (DNG) Media”. The talk features Dr Arun K. Bhattacharyya, Life Fellow of IEEE, former Principal Scientist at Lockheed Martin Corporation (USA), and Visiting Professor at IIT Kanpur, as the distinguished speaker.
The lecture explores two competing theoretical frameworks for understanding metamaterials—the Lorentz model and the Floquet eigenmodal analysis approach. While the Lorentz model suggests that perfect electric conducting (PEC) obstacles modify both permittivity and permeability tensors, Floquet analysis demonstrates that only the permittivity tensor is affected, raising fundamental questions about the possibility of achieving negative-permeability metamaterials using PEC obstacles. The session examines the source of inaccuracy in the Lorentz model, discusses characteristic features of resonant and non-resonant metamaterials, and scrutinises claims surrounding negative-refraction metamaterials in light of Maxwell’s equations.
