SUMMARY:Film Gala
DESCRIPTION:SRM University-AP hosted a Film Gala\, a two-day entertaining event on March 14 and 15\, 2023. The film fest screened remarkable movies with great cinematography\, screenplay and aesthetic value. The screening also witnessed renowned movie artist Mr Vishwak Sen as its guest. \nThe purpose of the event was to honour cinema and provide an active forum for movie buffs to come together. In addition to watching films\, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy live band performances\, participate in exciting contests\, and connect with other film enthusiasts. The film festival was a huge success\, providing participants with a sense of joy and fulfilment\, as well as creating a lasting memory of shared passion and community. \nThe Gala also provided a platform for interaction\, complemented by delectable food options from diverse stalls. The distribution of prizes celebrated the talents of competition winners\, adding a sense of accomplishment and further enhancing the festival’s allure.

SUMMARY:Combating Plastic Waste Contamination in India
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution and contamination is an emerging crisis that has become a major contributor to environmental degradation. Strategic measures with maximum efficacy must be adopted to tackle this increasing challenge. The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering is organising a seminar titled the ‘Scenario of Emerging Pollutant – Microplastics in India: Abundance\, Fate (stability\, mobility\, trophic transfer) and Eco-friendly Remediation’. The seminar will be held on March 15\, 2023. Prof. Gopala Krishna Darbha\, Associate Professor\, IISER\, Kolkata is the keynote speaker of the session. Prof. Darbha will deliver an insightful session on the excessive production of microplastics in India and how the staggering growth of plastic contamination will negatively influence our ecosystem. \nAbstract \nThe global demand for plastics has been increasing continuously because plastics have now become a ubiquitous part of human life. The plastics are easily available at low cost and have the maximum durability properties due to which it is getting very difficult to derail the entire systems of plastics manufacturing and its use. In the last 50 years\, it has been reported that the global production of plastic is 9.1 billion tons\, while the annual rate of plastic production has been continuously increasing by 8.7 %. These plastics generate 274 million tonnes of plastic solid waste\, globally. In India\, approximately 9.4 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated per year\, and 60 % of the plastic waste is recycled while the remaining is either landfilled or left unnoticed. Furthermore\, the current outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden increase in the production of personal protective equipment (gloves and masks) which adds plastic waste to the terrestrial environment\, and this can cause grievous plastic pollution soon. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic particles which are < 5 mm in diameter. These are estimated by various methods like salt-based density separation\, physical (microscopy)\, and chemical characterisation (spectroscopy). \nJoin the session and learn to combat the microplastic crisis!

This cultural extravaganza aimed to promote unity and harmony by fostering active participation in various competitions\, captivating the hearts and minds of the student community. \nThe event’s objective was to create an atmosphere that celebrated India’s rich traditions and encouraged a sense of pride and respect for the diverse cultural heritage among students. ‘Paridhan’ achieved this goal with resounding success\, as students from all houses poured their enthusiasm and talent into the inter-house ramp walk\, music\, and dance performances. \nThe turnout and active participation were nothing short of remarkable. Students adorned in vibrant and mesmerising traditional outfits filled the venue\, exuding a shared appreciation for India’s cultural richness. The event highlighted the beauty of diversity\, showcasing the myriad of traditions that exist within our student community. Beyond the remarkable performances\, ‘Paridhan’ created a strong sense of community and belonging among the students. The event served as a reminder that despite our unique backgrounds\, we are all bound by a common thread of cultural heritage. This shared appreciation fostered a deeper understanding and respect for one another\, strengthening the bonds that unite us. \nTo enhance the festive ambience\, ethnic food stalls were set up\, offering a tantalizing array of culinary delights.
