SUMMARY:Guest Talk on the Science of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Department of History is hosting a guest lecture titled “The Science of Art: Tracing Technological Perspectives in Art and Archaeology.” lecture will be delivered by Prof. Satish C. Pandey\, Professor of Art & Heritage Conservation at the Indian Institute of Heritage (formerly National Museum Institute)\, India. The lecture will focus on the impact of technological advancements on artistic practices and archaeological endeavors. \nAbout the Speaker: \nProf. Satish Pandey is the Professor & Head – Department of Art Conservation\nIndian Institute of Heritage\, Ministry of Culture\, Government of India\, as well as the\nVice Chair of the Directory Board International Council of Museums Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC) Paris\, France. He is an art conservator with major interests in heritage science and conservation. His research focuses on the decay mechanisms of inorganic materials (environmental\, chemical\, and bio-geochemical processes) and developing sustainable conservation methodologies and approaches. At present\, he is an assistant professor of art conservation at the National Museum Institute in New Delhi. Prof. Satish obtained his MA in Art Conservation from the National Museum Institute\, New Delhi (2001) followed by an MSc (2005) and a DPhil (2010) in Archaeological Science from the University of Oxford. His DPhil research focused on the mechanisms of transport and distribution of soluble salts in historic sandstone buildings. He was an AHRC & EPSRC Science and Heritage programme postdoctoral fellow at the Courtauld Institute of Art\, London on a project entitled ‘Salts and synthetic coatings on wall paintings: characterising their transformation\, interaction and contribution to deterioration’. Satish was also a US-ICOMOS visiting researcher at NCPTT\, Natchitoches\, LA\, and a visiting research fellow at the School of Geography and the Environment\, University of Oxford. Currently\, he also serves as the Chairman of the Academic Council of Heritage Academy at the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage\, New Delhi. \nAll interested students can attend this informative session\, which promises to provide valuable insights into the dynamic interplay between art and science.
