SUMMARY:Prof. Irudaya Rajan on Kerala Migration Survey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has become a worldwide phenomenon in the 21st century. Migratory tendencies have been inherent in the context of Kerala\, and it has been shaping the economic and social situation. The economic boom within the Gulf countries gave migration a considerable boost\, reaching its peak in terms of both numbers and remittance. Ironically\, Kerala\, of late\, is witnessing a reverse migration of labour. On this note\, the Department of Economics is organising a distinguished lecture titled “Big Data on Migration” on April 19\, 2024. Distinguished academician and scholar\, Prof. Irudya Rajan\, Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram will deliver the lecture. \nJoin the lecture for a resourceful session! \nAbstract \nThe first Kerala Migration Survey started in 1998 as a part of understanding the impact of migration on individuals\, households\, communities\, the economy\, and society using a stratified multistage random sampling of 10\,000 households. Over the period of the last 25 years\, our sample size has increased from 10000 in 1998 to 15000 in 2008 and 20000 in 2023. The estimates produced through this survey have become an important source for the Government of Kerala for its policy-making decisions regarding migration governance\, particularly return migration during the COVID-19 crisis. Interestingly\, Kerala model migration surveys have been replicated in the following states of India: Tamil Nadu\, Gujarat\, Punjab\, Goa\, Jharkhand and Odisha. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Irudya Rajan is a seasoned academician with over 30+ years of teaching experience across the country. He was conferred with a PhD in Demography from the International Institute for Population Sciences\, the University of Mumbai\, in 1989. His research interests include International Migration\, the Economics of Ageing and Demography\, and Population Ageing. An esteemed scholar\, Prof. Rajan has published in various reputed international and national journals\, book chapters and research projects funded by global organisations. He currently holds the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor\, at the Department of Economics\, SRM University-AP and Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram. Prior to this\, he held the position of Professor\, at the Centre for Development Studies\, Thiruvananthapuram. \nSince 1998\, Prof. Rjan coordinated eight large-scale migration surveys in Kerala with Professor K C Zachariah. The success of the Kerala Migration Survey urged neighbouring Indian states like\, Goa (2008)\, Punjab (2009)\, Tamil Nadu (2015)\, and Gujarat (2011) to replicate the same. He also developed the first longitudinal Ageing Survey in India (Kerala) in 2004 and repeated the same every three years. The first Kerala Ageing Survey (KAS) completed its seventh wave in 2022. The second KAS which began in 2013\, completed its fourth wave in 2022.

SUMMARY:A Deep Insight into School Mathematics Education Research
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is organising the eighth distinguished lecture by Prof. K Subramaniam\, a renowned academician and scholar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai\, India on April 19\, 2023. This resourceful session will be on the topic “How can Education Research make a Difference? A Perspective from Mathematics Education”. The talk will elaborate on school mathematics education research with an emphasis on critical education research and pedagogical research. \nJoin the session and gain insight into how education research can play a significant role in influencing the institution of education itself! \nAbstract \nWe must remember that education is a complex social institution shaped by larger social\, political and economic forces. Research in science or mathematics education makes a small but vital contribution to this constellation. The focus of the talk will be on school mathematics education research\, with emphasis on distinguishing critical educational research from curricular and pedagogical research\, arguing that both are needed. Drawing on the curricular and pedagogical research done at the Homi Bhabha Centre\, some examples will be discussed on how research can make small but significant contributions. The examples will also serve to communicate a picture of what such research involves. The speaker will also highlight some agenda for work within research as well as finding institutional homes for such research. \nAbout the Speaker \nK Subramaniam (Ravi) is a Professor at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education\, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai\, India. His main research interests are the design and organisation of core areas of the middle-grade mathematics curriculum such as fractions\, proportional thinking\, geometric measurement and algebra\, and the specialized knowledge that teachers need to teach effectively at this level. His other interests are the integration of out-of-school knowledge and school learning of mathematics\, frameworks for analysis of mathematics teaching and the role of visualization in the learning of science. He has contributed to the work of curriculum and textbook committees and to in-service teacher professional development in India. He has also played a central role in building and nurturing a community of mathematics educators in India. \nProf. Subramaniam has also contributed to formulating education policy through his participation in the focus group on the teaching of mathematics\, the syllabus committees for NCF-2005\, and the curriculum and textbook committees for the state of Maharashtra (since 2011). He is a member of the National Council of Teacher Education (2013-present). He has a BTech in Aeronautical engineering from IIT Madras and a PhD in philosophy from IIT Bombay. His PhD dissertation was on aspects of the philosophy of history\, with a focus on the Continental Philosopher Heidegger.
