SUMMARY:The Significance of Socially Relevant Science Education and Research
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is organising the 10th Distinguished Lecture on the topic “Science and Mathematics Education: Whose Science\, for Whom?” on October 04\, 2024. Distinguished academician Prof. R Ramanujam from Azim Premji University\, Bengaluru\, will deliver the esteemed session on the significance of integrating science and research education into university and school curricula to ensure that education is accessible to all sections of society. \nAbstract \nWhat do mathematics and science education mean to a student from socially and economically marginalised sections? We raise such questions and discuss our experiences in school education (in association with Tamil Nadu Science Forum and some government curriculum bodies)\, in teacher education (at Azim Premji University\, Bengaluru) and in education research (with HBCSE\, Mumbai) from this viewpoint. We point to the extensive need for socially rooted education research as well as for decisions in curriculum-making based on research. \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor R. Ramanujam is an eminent mathematician who earned his PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and completed post-doctoral work at City University of New York (CUNY)\, USA. He has a long-standing association with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc)\, Chennai\, and is currently a visiting professor at Azim Premji University. His research focuses on logic\, automata theory\, and complexity theory. He is deeply involved in mathematics education and has contributed to national educational frameworks. Notable awards include the Indira Gandhi Prize for Science Popularization in 2020. \nJoin the lecture for an insightful session!
