SUMMARY:Tax Policies and Inconsistencies: Complexity of the GST Act
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Economics is organising a special lecture by Prof. R Srinivas on December 23\, 2022. The lecture on “Evolving Design of Goods and Services Tax” will highlight the inconsistent buoyancy of the GST tax implemented in India. The Goods and Services Tax was introduced as a harmonised tax system for the taxation of commodities in India in June 2017\, covering more than 60% of the commodity transactions in the country. Union and state governments have been concurrently levying this tax and administering it. There are no differences in tax rates\, tax bases and administration processes across India. Prof. Srinivas will elucidate why the adopted tax system remains complex and yet to be wholly efficient. \nAbstract \nThe effort to harmonise commodity taxation in India started in 1993 at a conference of state finance ministers resolving to move towards a non-distorting Value Added Tax (VAT) system in India. The earlier arrangement of the levy of Excise Duty on production by the Union government and the levy of sales tax on transactions by the state governments created a complex\, economically distorting and non-buoyant tax system. With the adoption of VAT\, the existing problem was thought to be resolved. \nThough all the states adopted VAT in 2006\, the distorting tax system prevailed with differences in tax rates\, tax bases and the continuance of old sales tax on inter-state tax. The Union and state governments formed an empowered committee on commodity taxation in the late 1990s\, and since then negotiations went on to culminate in the implementation of GST in June 2017. \nThough the GST is supposed to be buoyant\, it is not consistently buoyant to be considered a reliable source of revenue. The two major commodities\, petroleum products and liquor are outside the GST. This continues to distort the commodity tax system. The creation of the GST council to resolve conflicts between states and between union and state governments on issues relating to GST is also seen as another source of political friction by the states who have given up a substantial portion of their tax powers. In terms of tax administration\, smaller firms face unsurmountable difficulties in adhering to the regulations of the GST act in terms of filing tax returns and getting refunds of tax credits. \nTherefore\, with several conflicts remaining unresolved the GST as a system of commodity taxation is still evolving and has yet to reach a level of maturity and stability. \nAbout the speaker \nProf. R Srinivasan is a Professor of Economics at the University of Madras and is currently a permanent member of the State Planning Commission of Tamil Nadu. Previously\, he was the Head of the Department of Econometrics at the University of Madras. He has a distinguished academic career and is a proven outstanding teacher and researcher of Economics. He has been conferred with an MA and PhD from the Department of Economics at the University of Madras. Prof Srinivasan also served as the Registrar of the University of Madras. \nProf R Srinivasan has a keen interest and research focus in Public Finance and Tamil Nadu Economy. He has exclusively written articles in Journals and Print media in English and Tamil and has publications in national and internationally acclaimed journals. He is also a member of various committees and boards. \nJoin the lecture to witness a dissection of the economic anatomy of India!

SUMMARY:Dr Lorenzo Contessi on many-body systems
DESCRIPTION:International research exposure is a prerequisite to developing an analytical bent of mind and knowledge acquisition. Global exposure help acquaint scholars with the nuances in the recent research domains and methodology. The Department of Physics is organising a Department Research Seminar to promote research discourse with eminent scientists and scholars from all around the world. The seminar will be addressed by Dr Lorenzo Contessi\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, IJCLabs\, on December 14\, 2022. In this seminar titled “Many-body systems around universality”\, Dr Contessi will discuss various universal systems\, especially in the unitarity universality class. \nAbstract \nUniversal systems are quantum mechanical objects that can be described similarly despite having different typical sizes\, energies\, and degrees of freedom. This is possible because they share identical few-body properties. Unitarity is arguably the most common universality class for low-energy physics and can be found in hadronic\, nuclear\, and atomic fields. This interconnection between fields is important because it allows for the passage of knowledge from one field to another. This is of special benefit to the fields in which very little is experimentally known since emergent phenomena can be predicted from more widely known sectors of physics. What is the “best” theory to describe the emergent phenomena maintaining interdisciplinarity is not a simple question to be answered. However\, effective field theories result is the most natural framework for this search for their systematic improvability and the connection to the underlying physics of the various universal systems. \nJoin the webinar to learn how to build an effective quantum mechanical theory\, how to pass knowledge from one field to others\, and what phenomena emerge in many-body systems.

SUMMARY:Unravelling the perceptions on Time!
DESCRIPTION:Humankind has always been enthralled by the ever-intriguing concept of Time and its perceived nature. This complex phenomenon with the scientific deliberation of its absolute or relative nature\, has been extensively discussed in literature\, creative arts\, and scientific academia. The Department of English is organising a webinar titled “Time and Apocalypse” on December 10\, 2022. Distinguished writer and physicist Prof. Vandana Singh is the keynote speaker of the session. Dr Soni Wadhwa\, Assistant Professor\, Department of English\, who is teaching the open elective course titled Time Travel Narratives (that includes Prof Singh’s two time travel stories as well) would be engaging Prof Singh in an interaction. The webinar will expound on the tenets of Time and its cultural notions in perceiving modern-day crisis phenomena such as climate change. \nAbstract \n“Time” is one of the most used words in English\, but it is also one of the least understood and most perplexing – as a phenomenon as well as an idea. In this talk\, Prof. Vandana Singh will explore the physics of time while focusing on the two extreme views of time\, absolute and relative. The view held by Isaac Newton is that time is absolute and it has also taken root in different cultures as the only truth about time. The view held by Albert Einstein is that time is relative\, a subject that has inspired much speculative fiction and science fiction films such as those dealing with time travel. Prof Singh will talk about these different views of time as well as alternative cultural conceptions that offer new insights as we confront modern-day apocalypses such as the unfolding horror of climate change. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Vandana Singh is an Indian science fiction writer and physicist\, and a professor of physics and environment at Framingham State University in the US. While her background is in theoretical particle physics\, her current academic work is on a transdisciplinary conceptualization of the climate crisis. She is a 2021 Climate Imagination Fellow at Arizona State’s Center for Science and the Imagination\, where\, along with three other international science fiction writers\, she worked on climate fiction in the lead-up to the UN COP 26 Climate Conference in Glasgow in November 2021. Her book of short stories Ambiguity and Other Machines was a finalist for the 2019 Philip K. Dick Award and the Crossword Book award. She is a winner of the Carl Brandon Parallax Award for her novella Distances. Her work has been published in numerous magazines and anthologies and has frequently been reprinted in Year’s Best anthologies. \nJoin the webinar for an exciting session on the complexities and challenges of understanding Time!

SUMMARY:The emerging landscape of electric vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Electric vehicles are the new paradigm of the automobile industry. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is arranging an invited talk on the Emerging landscape of electric vehicles-The new era of mobility to discuss how India is gearing up for this huge opportunity and the challenges that come along with the new pattern of mobility. Dr Deb Mukherjee\, the Managing Director of Omega Seiki Mobility Pvt Ltd\, will handle the session. \nAbout the talk \nGlobally\, almost all OEMs have made plans to switch to nonfossil fuel vehicles. Data shows that out of global production of 90 million/annum\, 76% will switch to electric vehicles by 2040. In India\, this transition has also started in the last five years with Government intervention. In the field of 2 and 3-wheelers\, we are seeing a significant switch to Electrics in the previous 5 years. Government is incentivising demand with incentives like FAME2. In addition to this\, on the supply side\, there are PLI schemes\, etc. Moreover\, Government is targeting a 30% conversion to electric vehicles by 2030. Given the Indian automotive industry numbers\, this will be a massive scale of electric vehicles in the country. Apart from domestic demand\, EVs have the potential to become one of the biggest exporters for India\, both in vehicles and components. The opportunity size is more than $500Bn. \nTo prepare for this tremendous opportunity\, we need to start large-scale manufacturing of cells\, batteries\, powertrains\, and other electronic components. The supply side challenges are equally enormous as there is a severe lack of materials\, technology\, and supply chain in the country. The most important question is how India is preparing for this mega opportunity and the challenges in this new paradigm of mobility. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Deb Mukherjee has done his graduation from NIT Bhopal in the field of Mechanical engineering. In the year 1998\, he grabbed his MTech from IIT DELHI. Moving further\, in 2009\, he did his PhD research on “Evaluating competitiveness of Indian auto components industry with Chinese industry” using the Global Competitiveness model of WEF and published several papers in journals on industrial competitiveness. He had done a lot in science and technology to serve society. Presently\, he is the Managing director of Omega Seiki Mobility private limited organisation.

SUMMARY:Invited talk on SolarPV Hybrid Distributed PowerGen System
DESCRIPTION:The Power and Control Society\, on behalf of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering\, is conducting an invited talk on SolarPV Hybrid Distributed PowerGen System for Rural & Urban Microgrid Applications.Dr Jayesh Barve\, Principal Engineer (Controls & Optimisation)\, GE Global Research\, Bangalore\, and President\, Automatic Control and Dynamic Optimisation Society\, will be handling the session\, covering motivation\, technical background\, and some perspectives based on his industrial R&D and pilot-plant experiences related to HDP microgrids. \nAbout the talk \nAn emerging trend in power systems technologies is the shift in the share of power generation from traditional large\, centralised fossil-fuel-based thermal power-generation systems (coupled to large transmission-distribution grids) to new Renewable and/or Hybrid Distributed Power generation (HDP) systems (EITHER off-grid OR grid-tied) forming a small\, local power generation- distribution systems called as nano/micro/mini-grids. Such HDP systems and micro-grids can help solve the universal energy access problem by providing electricity in remote\, rural areas at lower carbon footprints. Whereas\, in urban areas\, similar scaled-up\, grid-tied HDP microgrids can help reduce energy costs and carbon footprints for commercial and industrial facilities\, campuses\, and buildings. \nThe talk will highlight Physical and Digital transformation covering some details of a specific HDP solution that combines novel HDP Physical Systems (i.e.\, SolarPV\, Battery\, IC Engine\, Power-Energy Controls\, and Management\, etc.) integrated with state-of-art HDP Digital platform (i.e.\, cyber-secured Edge- CloudApp based advanced IIOT automation platform) developed by speaker & his team at GE Global Research Center\, Bangalore and with several plants successfully deployed & operational globally last few years. Finally\, a brief overview will be provided describing the expansion of this work to an urban microgrid energy management platform. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Jayesh Barve has more than thirty years of experience in industrial R&D and academia. He has filed 20+ global patent applications and 50+ research papers in peer-reviewed prestigious international journals and conferences. SUMMARY:An introduction to federated learning
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is hosting a seminar on September 16\, 2022\, at 4.00 pm as part of the Guest Lecture Series. Dr Anurag Singh\, Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy\, NIT Delhi\, will deliver a talk on the topic “Federated Learning”. \nAbstract of the talk \nThe most crucial resource for any business\, individual\, or person in the world is data. Everyone\, whether an individual or an institution\, wants to prevent a data breach. High-quality data must be subjected to machine learning algorithms. The model is trained using traditional machine learning techniques\, which save data to one server. There is a chance that this method will expose personal information. A machine learning technique called federated learning (FL) enables machine learning models to train on various datasets located on various sites without sharing data. Without putting training data in a centralised location\, it enables the development of a common global model. Additionally\, it permits personal information to stay in local places\, lowering the risk. \nA new area of machine learning called federated learning already offers greater advantages than conventional machine learning techniques. \nData Security: Training data is kept locally on the devices\, negating the need for a data pool. \nData variety: Heterogeneous data since it incorporates information from various users. \nReal-time continuous learning: Client data is used to enhance models continuously. \nFederated Learning is applied in the field of IoT\, Healthcare\, smartphones\, Advertising\, Autonomous Vehicles etc. \nSpeaker’s Profile \nDr Anurag Singh is currently working as the Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy at NIT Delhi. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research areas are Network Theory\, Dynamics on/of Networks\, Opinion Dynamics\, Epidemic Modeling\, Intelligent transportation system etc. Dr Anurag Singh has teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught courses ranging from the introductory level to specialized courses in Computer Science and Engineering\, and Mathematics. Currently\, he is mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels at the National Institute of Technology Delhi\, India. In addition\, he has also been supervising PhD students. He has around 70 publications featured across various leading journals and three DST-funded projects to his credit.

SUMMARY:From scratch to the published manuscript
DESCRIPTION:An ideal research process relies on some essential characteristics. One among them is to communicate the research findings. Peer reviewed research journals serve a huge role in this. However\, researchers lack an understanding of how to write a publishable research paper. Grasping the basic structure of a scientific paper would help the researcher to decide what should be included in each section. There will be pitfalls in each of these sections but can be avoided if approached strategically. Along with the other components\, target journal selection and authorship is also an important aspect of this entire activity. \nSuccessful production of an article for submission to a peer‐reviewed scientific journal requires substantial effort. To ensure this success\, The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is planning for a one-day online workshop on How to write and publish a research article. \nDate: August 06\, 2022 \nTime: 09.30 am to 1.00 pm \nThe workshop expects more than four hundred participants. It is open to both students and faculty from UG\, PG and PhD programmes. Assistant Professors Dr V Manikandan and Dr Murali Krishna Enduri are coordinating the event. The workshop will give a general idea about topics such as\, different options to publish research works\, benefits of publishing research articles\, steps to write a review paper or research article from scratch\, hands-on training with LaTeX to write a research article etc.

SUMMARY:Scalar conservation laws in one space dimension with strict convex flux
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is arranging the fifth instalment of the Departmental Distinguished Lecture Series on April 25\, 2022\, at 3.45 pm IST. Reputed Mathematician\, Prof A Adimurthi will deliver an informative lecture on the topic ‘Controllability of Scalar Conservation Laws with Discontinuous Flux’. \nAbout the Talk \nNavier-Stokes and Euler equations play an important role in studying the flow of incompressible fluids. Weak solutions to these equations can be obtained by Galerkin method but the uniqueness is a big open problem. It is a big challenge to obtain an extra condition for the class of functions\, so that in this class obtain the existence and uniqueness. To understand this phenomenon\, it is better to look at a one-dimensional case where the equation turns out to be viscous Burger’s equation or Burger’s equation with non-linearity is of quadratic order. In this talk\, we will restrict to Burger’s type equations called the Scalar Conservation Laws in one space dimension with strict convex flux. Way back in the 50’s\, this equation was studied by Lax and Oleinik and obtained an explicit formula for a solution. Oleinik showed that this satisfies an extraction called the Entropy Condition and then showed that in this class\, the solution is unique. Later Kruzkov\, in an ingenious way\, generalized this to obtain a unique solution for Scalar Conservation Law in higher dimensions and Lipschitz fluxes. This result was taken up by Zuazua and his collaborators and studied the Optimal Controllability for Burgers equation. They showed the existence of optimal control and to capture this\, they derived a numerical algorithm whose convergence is still open. In a different direction\, this was attacked\, and the problem was completely solved. Getting the optimal solution is via projection method in a Hilbert space. Recently\, this was extended in a non-trivial way to conservation laws with convex discontinuous flux. The talk will explain the main ideas of this work. \nAbout the Speaker \nA mathematician of repute\, Prof A Adimurthi has been associated with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\, Centre for Applicable Mathematics Bangalore. At present\, he is working as a visiting professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics\, IIT Kanpur. He has authored more than a hundred research articles on a wide range of topics including Partial differential equations\, Functional analysis\, Numerical analysis\, Calculus of variations\, Optimal control\, and many others. Prof Adi Adimurthi has been elected as a fellow of; The Indian Academy of Sciences (F.A.Sc) Bengaluru (1996)\, The National Academy of Sciences (F.N.A.Sc)\, India in 1997\, The Indian National Science Academy (F.N.A) in 1998\, The World Academy of Sciences(TWAS) in 2018\, Raja Ramanna and DST J.C. Bose National. Along with these fellowships\, Professor Adimurthi has also been honoured with the prestigious Dr Zakir Hussain Award in 2013.

SUMMARY:Ultra-low power and agile IC design for novel sensor nodes for the Internet of Things
DESCRIPTION:The Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly increased our awareness of the world and broadened the scope of our engagement with it. In the first episode of the ECE Department Guest Lecture Series\, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising a lecture on April 23\, 2022\, from 10.20 am to 12.00 noon. Dr Orazio Aiello\, Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa\, Italy\, will engage the audience on the topic Ultra-Low-Power and Agile IC Design for novel Sensor Nodes for the Internet of Things on that day. \nThe vision of a world where pervasive integrated electronic systems embedded in everyday life objects (e.g. household appliances\, surveillance cameras\, healthcare systems) are fully interconnected to collect\, process\, and exchange useful information requires energy-autonomous systems for distributed sensing and data acquisition. The low-cost requirement demands a small area\, low design effort\, digital-like shrinkage across CMOS generations\, and design/technology portability. The possibility to exploit the digital (automated) design flow even for analog building blocks can dramatically reduce the design effort of any system-on-chip that faces the analog signal. Since data processing is digital\, but most signals from the real world are analog\, almost any electronic device that interfaces with the surrounding environment will benefit from the outcomes of this investigation. In this framework\, the talk illustrates the concepts and the design flows which enable the implementation of analog functions by true digital circuits. \nBiography of the speaker: \nOrazio Aiello (Senior Member\, IEEE) received the BSc and MSc degrees (cum laude) from the University of Catania\, Italy\, in 2005 and 2008\, respectively\, the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) from the Scuola Superiore di Catania\, Italy\, in 2009\, and the PhD degree from the Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, in 2013.\,From 2008 to 2009\, he was an Analog IC Designer and an EMC Consultant for STMicroelectronics\, Castelletto\, Italy. In 2012\, he was a Visiting PhD. A student with Monash University\, Melbourne\, Australia. In 2013\, he was a Research Fellow in a joint project with FIAT-Chrysler Automobiles\, Turin. In 2014\, he joined NXP-Semiconductors\, Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, as a Mixed Signal IC Designer and an EMC Expert. In 2015 and 2016\, he was a Visiting Fellow with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia. Since 2015\, he has been working with the Green IC Group\, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)\, National University of Singapore\, where he has also been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual and a Global Fellow leading the ULPIoT project. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Genova\, Italy. His main research interests include energy-efficient analogue-mixed signal circuits and sensor interfaces. Dr Aiello is a member of the IEEE CASS Microlearning AdHoc Committee and is/was a Technical Program Committee Member of a number of conferences\, such as NORCAS and APCCAS. \nJoin this informative lecture with Dr Orazio Aiello on April 23\, 2022 at 10.20 am IST.
