SUMMARY:Navier stokes equations: A million dollar open problem
DESCRIPTION:The second lecture in the Distinguished Lecture Series organised by the Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP will be held on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm. Prof Amiya Kumar Pani from the Department of Mathematics\, IIT Bombay\, will elucidate the lecture on the topic “Navier Stokes Equations: A Million Dollar Open Problem”. \nOn August 8\, 1900\, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about 23 open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. This influenced the decision of a recently formed Clay Mathematical Institute (CMI) to announce the seven Millennium Prize Problems in the CMI Millennium Meeting held on May 24\, 2000. One such problem is the theme of the present talk. Now it is widely accepted that the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid with moderate velocity is described by the Navier-Stokes Equations. Although these equations were written down in the 19th century\, the existing mathematical results are not adequate to unfold the secrets hidden in the Navier-Stokes equations. \nIn this talk\, Prof Amiya shall concentrate on a brief description of this problem\, mathematical model\, a quick look at history\, what is known at this point\, some important approaches and what is possibly needed. Finally\, he will conclude the talk with a note on the present state of Indian applied mathematics and whether we are ready to contribute towards this millennium problem. \nAbout the Speaker: \nProf Amiya K Pani is Professor at IIT\, Bombay. He is well known for his research work in the area of numerical approximations of partial differential equations. His expertise includes construction\, stability\, and convergence analysis of finite element methods\, finite difference schemes\, orthogonal spline collocation methods for free boundary problems\, partial integrodifferential equations\, coupled equations in Oil Reservoir Studies\, evolutionary variational inequalities\, and scientific computations for industrial applications. Professor Pani is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences\, India. He was awarded the Best Young Mathematician for his outstanding contributions to Numerical Analysis\, Partial Differential Equations\, and Industrial Mathematics by the Indian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM). \nTune in to this intriguing lecture on Navier stokes equations on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm.

SUMMARY:Flipping with the flow – Perspectives of puzzling fluid dynamics and human health
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is organising the first episode of the Distinguished Lecture Series on September 15\, 2021\, Wednesday\, at 6.30 pm. Prof Suman Chakraborty from the Department of Mechanical Engineering\, IIT Kharagpur\, will deliver a lecture titled “Flipping with the Flow – Perspectives of Puzzling Fluid Dynamics and Human Health”. \nAbstract of the Lecture:\nOver the past century\, advancements in fluid dynamics hallmarked deeper studies on complex fluids\, though. Fluid dynamics of blood\, possibly the most critical complex fluid impacting human lives\, is primarily dictated by red blood cells (RBCs) that are flexible biconcave discs spending their lives suspended in blood plasma that is elusively more complex than simple water. Commonly\, RBCs stack together to form structures called rouleaux like cylindrical packs of coins that reform continuously. Contrary to intuition\, instead of clogging\, such reforms result in the easier flow of blood as it passes through extremely narrow channels. An influential theoretical premise of blood flow has been rationalizing this by drawing analogies of RBCs with compound liquid droplets in which the cytoplasm is more viscous than the outer fluid that triggers a series of complex shape transitions. However\, a stiffening of RBC membranes under certain conditions contradicts this analogy and may alter ATP release that happens due to shape deformation. This may signify specific diseased conditions and influence a plethora of ailments ranging from cardiovascular irregularities to cancer metastasis. The role of unique flexibility of microvasculature and morphology of the microenvironment\, dynamical signals of pressure pulsation and disease-specific blood rheology make it extremely deceptive and patient-specific and difficult to model within the known territories of expertise of fluid dynamics. \nProf Suman Chakraborty will discuss here various computational\, in-vitro and in-vivo studies conducted in his research group that have attempted to address some of the pertinent outstanding questions\, unresolved paradoxes\, and will present a deeper challenge that makes even ‘simple’ blood flow strikingly more complicated than its intuitive analogy of pipe flow in engineering fluid mechanics. He will also suggest a way forward with a convergence of physics-based modelling and data science\, where blood flow is not merely perceived as an ‘inert’ physical phenomenon but recognized as an exclusive hallmark of ‘life’ with all individualism intrinsic to humans. \nAbout the Speaker:\nProf Suman Chakraborty received the prestigious Santi Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize and became the youngest Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. He has also been a Fellow at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA)\, Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS)\, and Indian National Academy of Science (NASI)\, in addition to being the recipient of the Indo-US Research Fellowship. He is also a recipient of the Scopus Young Scientist Award given by Elsevier for high citations in his research publications\, the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2005)\, and the Young Scientist/Young Engineer Award from various National Academies. He has been bestowed with the Fellowship of the American Physical Society\, the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry\, and the Fellowship of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. \nJoin this educational session on September 15\, 2021\, at 6.30 pm to gain insights from the field expert.

SUMMARY:Oxford Professor elucidates on the secession with natural resources
DESCRIPTION:The second episode of the lecture series organised by the Department of Economics\, SRM University-AP\, will be held on September 07\, 2021\, at 04.00 pm. The lecture titled “Secession with natural resources” will be delivered by Prof Pramila Krishnan from the Oxford Department of International Development. \nAbstract:\nThe lecture will look at the formation of new Indian states in 2001 to uncover the effects of political secession on the comparative economic performance of natural resource-rich and natural resource-poor areas. Resource-rich constituencies fared comparatively worse within new states that inherited a relatively larger proportion of natural resources. The study argues that these patterns reflect how political reorganization affected the quality of state governance of natural resources. Results describe a model of collusion between state politicians and resource rent recipients that can account for the relationships we see in the data between natural resource abundance and post-break-up local outcomes. \nAbout the Speaker:\nPramila Krishnan is a Professor of Development Economics at Oxford Department of International Development\, University of Oxford and a Fellow at Pembroke College\, Oxford. She began her academic life as an econometrician working on models of self-selection before seeing the light and moving on to work in development economics.\nHer research has concentrated on applied microeconomics and she has worked on topics ranging from household portfolios of poor households to risk-sharing\, intra-household allocation and informal insurance\, social networks\, non-cognitive skills and whether migrants might be both rich and happy. Pramila Krishnan teaches on the MSc in Economics for Development\, offering a module on education. \nJoin this intriguing online lecture on September 07\, 2021\, at 04.00 pm and enrich your knowledge through the scholarly voice of Prof Pramila Krishnan!

SUMMARY:Additive Manufacturing: Fundamentals\, Processes\, and Applications
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mechanical Engineering at SRM University – AP organises a webinar titled “Additive Manufacturing: Fundamentals\, Processes\, and Applications” on Aug 19\, 2021\, at 5:30 pm. The lecture by Prof P. M. Pandey\, Professor at Indian Institute of Technology\, Delhi aims to educate the audience on how additive manufacturing (AM) will transform manufacturing in the future. \nAdditive manufacturing (AM) technology has been recognized as an emerging technology for the direct fabrication of physical objects from the developed computer-aided design (CAD) models. AM techniques make real physical objects by adding materials in a layer-by-layer fashion rather than removing the material. The layered manufacturing abilities of AM technologies offer the building of parts with geometric and material complexities. Numerous AM techniques are simple and flexible that allow easy production of complex and customized objects. Through intensive research over the past two decades\, significant progress has been made in the development and commercialization of new and innovative AM processes. Further\, numerous practical applications in aerospace\, automotive\, biomedical\, energy and other fields have been discovered. \nAbout the speaker:\nProf Pulak M Pandey is currently serving as a Professor in IIT Delhi. SUMMARY:Insights into VLSI Design @ ECE Department
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SRM University-AP is organising a webinar session on the topic “Insights into VLSI Design @ ECE Department SRM AP” on August 14\, 2021\, Saturday\, at 6.00 pm. Dr Indranil Hatai\, Assistant Professor from the department will elucidate on the topic via the Zoom platform. \nVery-large-scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single chip. Before the introduction of VLSI technology\, most ICs had a limited set of functions they could perform. An electronic circuit might consist of a CPU\, ROM\, RAM and other glue logic. VLSI lets IC designers add all of these into one chip. With the advent of very large scale integration (VLSI) designs\, the number of applications of integrated circuits (ICs) in high-performance computing\, controls\, telecommunications\, image and video processing\, and consumer electronics has been rising at a very fast pace. The current cutting-edge technologies such as high resolution and low bit-rate video and cellular communications provide the end-users with a marvellous amount of applications\, processing power and portability. This trend is expected to grow rapidly\, with very important implications on VLSI design and systems design. \n(Information Source) \nJoin this informative webinar on August 14\, 2021\, to know more about the ECE department at SRM University-AP that grooms students to the electronics industry that has achieved phenomenal growth due to the rapid advances in large scale integration technologies.
