SUMMARY:Guest Lecture on Advancing Water Treatment
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Department Guest Lecture titled “Advancing Water Treatment: From Electrochemical Oxidation to Electrified Membranes” by Dr Naresh Mameda\, Brain Pool Invited Scientist\, Kyungpook National University\, South Korea. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Naresh Mameda received his PhD in Chemistry from CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (India) in 2016. He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research and served as a Research Professor at Kyungpook National University\, South Korea. He is currently a Brain Pool Invited Scientist at Kyungpook National University\, Korea. His research focuses on electrochemical oxidation\, catalytic materials\, and electrified membrane systems for sustainable wastewater treatment and water reuse. Dr Mameda has published over 77 peer-reviewed articles\, holds two patents\, authored two book chapters\, and serves as a guest editor for journals including Crystals\, Catalysts\, and Membranes. \nAbstract \nElectrochemical oxidation has attracted significant attention as an effective approach for degrading persistent organic pollutants by in-situ generating reactive oxidants. However\, limitations related to mass transfer\, electrode durability\, and energy efficiency have motivated the development of integrated treatment strategies. This presentation discusses recent advances in coupling electrochemical oxidation with membrane separation to create multifunctional electrified membrane systems [1-6]. Key highlights include catalytic anodes designed for micropollutant degradation [4\,6]\, hybrid electrochemical-membrane reactors for simultaneous filtration and oxidation [1\,3]\, and electroactive nanowire membranes with improved conductivity and stability [2\,5]. Continuous-flow studies demonstrate the efficient removal of organic contaminants\, pathogens\, and particulates\, with enhanced fouling control\, illustrating the potential of electrified membranes as sustainable\, scalable technologies for water reuse. \nReferences: \n[1] N. SUMMARY:Talk on Internet Adoption\, Gender and Productivity in Informal Firms
DESCRIPTION:Paari School of Business (PSB) is organising an External Research Talk on “Internet Adoption\, Gender and Productivity in Informal Firms in India” on February 26\, 2026. The talk will be delivered by Ms Jayati Chatterjee\, Research scholar at IIT Madras. \nUsing nationally representative data from 2010 to 2023\, the study analyses the impact of internet adoption on firm productivity in India’s unorganised sector\, with a particular focus on gender differences. The findings reveal that internet adoption leads to an average increase of 28 percent in firm productivity. However\, a substantial gender productivity gap remains\, as female-owned enterprises exhibit nearly 48 percent lower productivity compared to male-owned firms. Notably\, female-led enterprises that adopt internet technology experience a 23 percent increase in productivity\, which helps narrow the productivity gap relative to firms that do not adopt the internet. These results underscore the significant role of digital technology in enhancing productivity and fostering gender-inclusive growth within the informal sector. \nAbout the Speaker \nMs Jayati Chatterjee is a research scholar in Economics at IIT Madras\, specializing in development economics and industrial organisation. Her research focuses on digital technology adoption among small firms\, with an emphasis on gender. Her work has been published in top peer-reviewed journals\, and she has presented her research at international conferences\, including those organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB)\, the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI)\, and the University of Tokyo. She received the Best Paper Award at ICMM 2024\, held at IIM Amritsar.

SUMMARY:Kafka the Hikikomori: Rethinking Decision\, Delay\, and Melancholy in Contemporary Life
DESCRIPTION:Department of Media Studies\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA)\, SRM University-AP\, is hosting a talk titled “Kafka the Hikikomori:Decision\, Procrastination\, and Melancholy”. The talk invites audiences into a rich philosophical exploration of decision-making\, hesitation\, and the emotional realities of modern existence. \nThe session examines how acts of delay\, uncertainty\, and withdrawal shape human thought and behaviour. Rather than viewing procrastination or indecision as weaknesses\, the lecture frames them as meaningful conditions shaped by reflection\, possibility\, and the pressure of choice in contemporary life. \nConcept and Intellectual Context \nDrawing on the works of Franz Kafka\, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz\, and Gilles Deleuze\, the lecture places literature and philosophy into dialogue to rethink how decisions are formed. Kafka’s protagonists—often caught in cycles of waiting\, doubt\, and repetition—become figures through which modern psychological and social conditions can be understood. \nLeibniz’s reflections on deliberation and hesitation are revisited to examine how thought itself can suspend action. Deleuze’s reinterpretation of decision as struggle rather than assertion opens up a different way of understanding agency—not as a moment of certainty\, but as a process shaped by time\, repetition\, and difference. The talk also engages ideas associated with Félix Guattari to consider how identity\, environment\, and social structures influence our ability to act. \nCentral to the lecture is the contemporary phenomenon of hikikomori\, or extreme social withdrawal. Reading Kafka through this lens\, the session explores how isolation\, introspection\, and emotional fatigue shape modern subjectivity. Decision emerges not as a simple exercise of willpower\, but as something fragile\, delayed\, and negotiated within a complex web of internal and external pressures. \nSpeaker \nJoff P N Bradley\nFull Professor of English and Philosophy at Teikyo University\, Tokyo. His research spans cinema studies\, post-media theory\, Deleuze studies\, educational philosophy\, and Japanese cultural contexts. With extensive international academic engagement\, his work explores how philosophy intersects with technology\, media\, and contemporary social life. \nWhy This Talk Matters \nIn a world defined by constant decision-making\, information overload\, and growing social isolation\, this lecture asks urgent questions: \n\nWhat does it mean to hesitate in an age that demands speed and productivity?\nCan procrastination be understood as a philosophical condition rather than a personal failure?\nHow do repetition\, reflection\, and self-awareness reshape our capacity to act?\nWhat might it mean to interrupt cycles of melancholy and reclaim agency?\n\nBy connecting philosophy\, literature\, and contemporary lived experience\, the session offers new ways to understand emotional life\, intellectual struggle\, and the complexities of modern subjectivity. \nAudience \nThis lecture is open to students\, researchers\, faculty\, and anyone interested in philosophy\, literature\, media studies\, psychology\, and contemporary cultural thought. It will be particularly relevant for those exploring questions of decision-making\, procrastination\, self-reflection\, and the experience of living in an increasingly introspective and disconnected world.

SUMMARY:Chemistry Guest Lecture on O-Alkynyl-Nitriles
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Guest Lecture on the topic “O-Alkynyl-Nitriles: A New Building Block for Construction of Small Organic Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest“ on February 05\, 2026. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Akhilesh K Verma\, FNA\, FRSC\, Senior Fellow\, Institution of Eminence (IoE)\, Senior Professor (Organic Chemistry)\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Delhi. \nAbstract \nThe simplicity\, efficiency\, and generality of reactions using alkynes have led to its applications in the synthesis of a wide variety of small organic molecules and natural products. Developing synthetic strategies for the direct synthesis of amino-substituted small molecules in terms of selectivity\, operational simplicity\, functional group tolerance\, and\nenvironmental sustainability is in constant demand as the majority of drugs; drug-like compounds contain hetero atoms at their core. In continuation of our interest in the synthesis of small organic molecules using alkynes and super-base chemistry\, we have successfully engineered the synthesis of a variety of biologically important scaffolds using ortho-alkynyl/alkenyl aryl nitriles. In this presentation\, I would like to discuss some recent results in this chemistry. \n

The main focus will be on Higgs boson decays into a top quark and a light quark within the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet model. In particular\, the signal strengths and the corresponding upper limits on the production cross sections will be discussed\, offering insights into Higgs–fermion interactions and possible signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. The seminar will conclude with a summary of the current status of charged Higgs boson searches at CMS.

SUMMARY:8th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Vittaldas V Prabhu
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean Research and the Department of Mechanical Engineering is jointly organising the 8th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Vittaldas V Prabhu \, Director of Penn State’s Service Systems Engineering program\, on January 07\, 2025. \nTitle: “Engineering the 21st Century Service Economy: A Research and Education Agenda for Service Systems Engineering” \nAbstract \nService Systems Engineering (SSE) provides a rigorous analytical foundation for improving the performance of complex service enterprises across retail\, healthcare\, logistics\, financial services\, and digital operations. Building on recent advances such as fusion-learning Bayesian networks for diagnostics\, distributed and data- driven control of logistics networks\, and cash-flow bullwhip modeling in capital-intensive supply chains\, this lecture outlines a research agenda that strengthens efficiency\, resilience\, and human-centered decision making in modern service operations. A complementary education agenda highlights how experiential projects\, interdisciplinary pathways\, AI-enabled decision tools\, and affordable cyber-physical platforms can prepare engineers to model\, optimize\, and innovate within the rapidly expanding service economy. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Vittaldas V Prabhu is Professor of Industrial Engineering and the Charles and Enid Schneider Faculty Chair in Service Enterprise Engineering at Penn State University. His research advances service systems engineering through contributions to Bayesian network diagnostics\, smart logistics\, distributed control\, decision support systems\, and cash-flow bullwhip analytics across manufacturing\, healthcare\, IT\, and financial operations. He is the Director of Penn State’s Service Systems Engineering program\, integrating service-focused curricula\, experiential industry partnerships\, AI-enabled projects\, and affordable cyber-physical learning platforms. Prof. Prabhu earned his graduate degrees and Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is an IISE Fellow.
