SUMMARY:Expert Talk on Host–Pathogen Interactions
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biological Sciences is organising an Expert Talk on “SWR1 Chromatin Remodeler Orchestrates the Molecular Dialogue Between Pathogen and Host” by Prof. Saravanan Matheshwaran\, Associate Professor\, Microbial Adaptation and Chromatin Dynamics Laboratory\, Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering\, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. \nDr Saravanan is a distinguished researcher in the areas of microbial adaptation\, chromatin dynamics\, and host–pathogen interactions. This expert lecture will benefit students\, research scholars\, and faculty by providing insights into cutting-edge research and lending opportunities for future academic collaborations. \nAbstract \nChromatin remodelers such as SWR1 regulate gene expression through ATP dependent deposition of the histone variant H2A.Z\, thereby coordinating genome stability\, transcription\, and cellular adaptation. While the functions of SWR1 have been extensively studied in yeast\, its role in fungal pathogenesis and host interaction remains largely unexplored. Here\, we investigated the role of the SWR1 chromatin remodeling complex in the maize smut fungus Ustilago maydis by deleting its catalytic ATPase subunit\, swr1. The Δswr1 mutant exhibited elongated pseudohyphal morphology\, hypersensitivity to DNA damage\, and enhanced melanin production\, indicating defects in genome maintenance\, cell cycle progression\, and metabolic homeostasis. Transcriptome analysis revealed widespread transcriptional reprogramming\, including altered expression of genes involved in secondary metabolism\, stress adaptation\, nutrient transport\, and melanin biosynthesis. Dual RNA sequencing of infected maize tissues demonstrated that SWR1 is indispensable for successful biotrophic development and coordinated cross-kingdom gene regulation. The Δswr1 mutant showed reduced expression of fungal effectors\, carbohydrate-active enzymes\, transporters\, and iron acquisition systems required for host colonization. Correspondingly\, maize infected with the mutant displayed extensive transcriptional reprogramming\, including activation of defense responses\, cell wall reinforcement\, hormone signaling\, reactive oxygen species homeostasis\, and nutrient metabolism. Together\, these findings establish SWR1 as a central epigenetic regulator that integrates fungal metabolism\, virulence\, and host transcriptional reprogramming to promote successful biotrophic interaction between U. maydis and maize.

Bringing together 35 student startup teams and five experienced industry mentors\, the programme will provide a focused environment for learning\, mentoring\, one-to-one interactions\, pitch development and investment-readiness preparation. \nOver the past six months\, 35 student startup ideas from across various departments have been identified and progressively refined through expert guidance. The Deep Dive Workshop marks the next phase of this structured startup development journey\, enabling student founders to critically evaluate their ideas\, understand market opportunities\, strengthen their business models and develop practical pathways for growth. \nA Three-Day Journey of Learning\, Mentoring and Pitch Preparation \nDay 1 – Learn & Refine\nThe first day will focus on strengthening the fundamentals of each startup idea. Students will participate in expert-led sessions covering problem validation\, market understanding\, business models and essential aspects of startup development. The sessions will help teams revisit their assumptions\, understand customer needs and refine their value propositions. \nDay 2 – Deep-Dive Mentoring\nThe second day will provide intensive\, one-to-one and sector-specific mentoring interactions. Startup teams will engage directly with experienced industry mentors to identify key challenges\, evaluate their solutions\, explore market opportunities and receive actionable feedback to strengthen their business ideas. \nDay 3 – Pitch & Investment Readiness\nThe final day will focus on helping teams communicate their startup propositions with clarity and confidence. DESCRIPTION:SRM University-AP is organising a University Level Lecture titled “A Journey Through Data Over the Past Five Decades: What do our students of UG\, PG & Doctoral learn from this?”. The session will feature Dr Chebrolu Pulla Rao\, Senior Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Retired Institute Chair Professor from IIT Bombay\, as the expert speaker. \nDr Chebrolu Pulla Rao is a distinguished academician and Retired Institute Chair Professor from IIT Bombay\, currently serving as a Senior Professor in the Department of Chemistry. He brings decades of experience in academic research\, higher education pedagogy\, and interdisciplinary data applications. \nThe session is expected to benefit undergraduate\, postgraduate\, and doctoral students\, as well as faculty members interested in the evolution of data analytics\, artificial intelligence\, machine learning\, and modern research methodologies. \nAbstract \nThis talk aims to follow the path of the rich transformation that took place in nature and tune of the data over the past five decades and the sudden jump that took place in the past one-half to one decade by bringing the role of AI & ML in every facet and approach of our teaching\, research and innovation.
