SUMMARY:Kafka the Hikikomori: Rethinking Decision\, Delay\, and Melancholy in Contemporary Life
DESCRIPTION:Department of Media Studies\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA)\, SRM University-AP\, is hosting a talk titled “Kafka the Hikikomori:Decision\, Procrastination\, and Melancholy”. The talk invites audiences into a rich philosophical exploration of decision-making\, hesitation\, and the emotional realities of modern existence. \nThe session examines how acts of delay\, uncertainty\, and withdrawal shape human thought and behaviour. Rather than viewing procrastination or indecision as weaknesses\, the lecture frames them as meaningful conditions shaped by reflection\, possibility\, and the pressure of choice in contemporary life. \nConcept and Intellectual Context \nDrawing on the works of Franz Kafka\, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz\, and Gilles Deleuze\, the lecture places literature and philosophy into dialogue to rethink how decisions are formed. Kafka’s protagonists—often caught in cycles of waiting\, doubt\, and repetition—become figures through which modern psychological and social conditions can be understood. \nLeibniz’s reflections on deliberation and hesitation are revisited to examine how thought itself can suspend action. Deleuze’s reinterpretation of decision as struggle rather than assertion opens up a different way of understanding agency—not as a moment of certainty\, but as a process shaped by time\, repetition\, and difference. The talk also engages ideas associated with Félix Guattari to consider how identity\, environment\, and social structures influence our ability to act. \nCentral to the lecture is the contemporary phenomenon of hikikomori\, or extreme social withdrawal. Reading Kafka through this lens\, the session explores how isolation\, introspection\, and emotional fatigue shape modern subjectivity. Decision emerges not as a simple exercise of willpower\, but as something fragile\, delayed\, and negotiated within a complex web of internal and external pressures. \nSpeaker \nJoff P N Bradley\nFull Professor of English and Philosophy at Teikyo University\, Tokyo. His research spans cinema studies\, post-media theory\, Deleuze studies\, educational philosophy\, and Japanese cultural contexts. DESCRIPTION:On February 18\, 2026\, the Department of Economics\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA) is organising a half-day seminar on “Cash Transfers and the Politics of Welfare: Rethinking Social Protection in India”.  \nConvened and co-convened by Dr Aruolipsa Das and Dr Boddu Surjana\, this seminar will grace the presence of three eminent speakers; Dr Dipa Sinha\, Associate Professor\, Center for the Study of Indian Economy\, Azim Premji University; Prof. R Ramakumar\, Professor\, Centre for Study of Developing Economies\, School of Development Studies\, Tata Institute of Social Sciences\, Mumbai\, and Mr Akshay Limal\, Senior Consultant\, Nutrition\, UNICEF India\, Odisha. \nLargely\, the seminar will explore themes around the evolution of welfare instruments in India\, the economic trade-offs of vash and in-kind transfers\, and contemporary debates around political economy. SUMMARY:Chemistry Guest Lecture on O-Alkynyl-Nitriles
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Guest Lecture on the topic “O-Alkynyl-Nitriles: A New Building Block for Construction of Small Organic Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest“ on February 05\, 2026. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Akhilesh K Verma\, FNA\, FRSC\, Senior Fellow\, Institution of Eminence (IoE)\, Senior Professor (Organic Chemistry)\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Delhi. \nAbstract \nThe simplicity\, efficiency\, and generality of reactions using alkynes have led to its applications in the synthesis of a wide variety of small organic molecules and natural products. Developing synthetic strategies for the direct synthesis of amino-substituted small molecules in terms of selectivity\, operational simplicity\, functional group tolerance\, and\nenvironmental sustainability is in constant demand as the majority of drugs; drug-like compounds contain hetero atoms at their core. In continuation of our interest in the synthesis of small organic molecules using alkynes and super-base chemistry\, we have successfully engineered the synthesis of a variety of biologically important scaffolds using ortho-alkynyl/alkenyl aryl nitriles. In this presentation\, I would like to discuss some recent results in this chemistry. \n

Putcha is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at California State University\, Fullerton\, USA. He received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Prof. Putcha’s research spans structural reliability\, risk analysis\, and interdisciplinary engineering applications\, and he has an extensive record of teaching\, research publications\, and professional contributions in these areas. He has also held visiting academic and research appointments internationally and has contributed significantly to advancing engineering knowledge and practice over his distinguished career.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biological Sciences is organising the India–UK AMR Network Meeting on January 21-23\, 2026\, along with University of Leeds\, representing a major step towards strengthening cross-country\, One Health–aligned AMR research. Funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences\, the India–UK AMR Network brings together leading researchers\, clinicians\, veterinarians\, and public health experts from India and the UK to build a collaborative network focused on understanding antimicrobial use and resistance in apparently healthy populations across India. \nSignificance of the Meeting \nAntimicrobial resistance is a critical global health challenge\, with community-level transmission increasingly recognised as a key driver. This meeting is significant in shifting the focus beyond clinical settings to healthy populations\, offering new insights into early AMR emergence and spread. The seminar will be delivered by Dr Gouranga Kole\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, National Taiwan\, University and CERN\, Geneva\, Switzerland. \nAbstract \nRecent results on measurements related to the Higgs boson using proton–proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC will be presented. The seminar will begin with an overview of the object reconstruction techniques employed in the CMS experiment\, providing essential context for the subsequent analyses. The main focus will be on Higgs boson decays into a top quark and a light quark within the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet model. In particular\, the signal strengths and the corresponding upper limits on the production cross sections will be discussed\, offering insights into Higgs–fermion interactions and possible signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. The seminar will conclude with a summary of the current status of charged Higgs boson searches at CMS.

Building on recent advances such as fusion-learning Bayesian networks for diagnostics\, distributed and data- driven control of logistics networks\, and cash-flow bullwhip modeling in capital-intensive supply chains\, this lecture outlines a research agenda that strengthens efficiency\, resilience\, and human-centered decision making in modern service operations. A complementary education agenda highlights how experiential projects\, interdisciplinary pathways\, AI-enabled decision tools\, and affordable cyber-physical platforms can prepare engineers to model\, optimize\, and innovate within the rapidly expanding service economy. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Vittaldas V Prabhu is Professor of Industrial Engineering and the Charles and Enid Schneider Faculty Chair in Service Enterprise Engineering at Penn State University. His research advances service systems engineering through contributions to Bayesian network diagnostics\, smart logistics\, distributed control\, decision support systems\, and cash-flow bullwhip analytics across manufacturing\, healthcare\, IT\, and financial operations. He is the Director of Penn State’s Service Systems Engineering program\, integrating service-focused curricula\, experiential industry partnerships\, AI-enabled projects\, and affordable cyber-physical learning platforms. Prof. Edathil Vijayan\, President\, Society for Biotechnologists India (SBTI) and Chairman\, National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) – Kerala Chapter\, will deliver an interactive session on “Disruptive Technologies Expected to Change the World.” \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Dr. Edathil Vijayan FNASc.\, currently President\, Society for Biotechnologists India (SBTI) holds a BSc (Hons.)\, MSc. and Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University. Immediately after his PhD\, he joined the Department of Zoology\, Center for Advanced Studies in Endocrinology\, Delhi University as a Faculty. He was awarded the Ford Foundation post-doctoral Fellowship with Dr S M McCann at the University of Texas\, Southwestern Medical School at Dallas\, USA from1974-78. On return\, he was selected as an Associate Professor\, School of Life Sciences in the newly established Hyderabad Central University and rose to the rank of full Professor shortly. He was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry Gottingen\, Germany (1981-83). He was invited as Professor and Head\, Dept of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Dean\, School of Life Sciences\, Pondicherry Central University in 1988 and continued in that position till 2006. \nHis research interests vary from Neuroendocrinology/Mammalian reproduction\, Neuropeptides and Neurotransmitters\, generously supported by DST grants. Prof. Vijayan has published over 105 papers in International Journals of repute including Nobel Foundation Symposium Volume and contributed Chapters in several Books. He has supervised 12 Ph.D.\, and 15 M.Phil Scholars and served as Chairman\, Board of Studies\, Member Academic Council and Executive Council of several Universties and Expert Committees of DST\, ICMR\, CSIR\, UGC and UPSC and NAAC. He is also Ph.D. examiner for over 40 Indian and foreign Universities. Life Member of several Professional Societies including Endocrine Society USA and Max-Planck Alumni Association Germany.

Prof. G Narhari Sastry\, Professor \, Department of Biotechnology\, IIT Hyderabad\, resource person for the Guest Lecture will deliver an insightful session on “Artificial Intelligence in Natural Sciences and Engineering”.  \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. G Narahari Sastry is a professor at the Department of Biotechnology\, IIT Hyderabad. His research interests are working in the interdisciplinary areas of chemistry\, biology\, material science\, software development and artificial intelligence. In the last decade\, the GNS group was involved in developing indigenous software that aims to strengthen computational drug discovery called the Molecular Property Diagnostic Suite (MPDS)\, thereby working towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Dr. Sastry has also made fundamental contributions in the field of non-covalent interaction\, Bucky bowl chemistry\, aromaticity\, and pericyclic reaction. He has made a great contribution in open-source software development in the field of Computer-Aided Drug Discovery\, databases\, and web servers; all the resources developed by his group are freely accessible to the scientific community. He has published more than 340 research articles in reputed journals with an active average impact factor. \nMost of his papers are well-cited\, with a total of 14\,900 citations\, an h-index of 57\, and an i10-index of 260\, according to Google Scholar. Dr. Sastry and his group have mainly contributed to and maintained various web-based platforms and databases\, such as a) MPDS (for several diseases)\, b) CAD\, c) A2ID\, d) PLID\, e) NEI-MPDB\, and f) OSADHI. He guided 31 Ph.D. and 30 Post-doctoral fellows\, besides over 200 people who are involved in short-term visits. He has given over 450 lectures in both national and international conferences\, invited talks and symposia. \nDr. Sastry was awarded with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Chemical Sciences (2011) (one of the highest prizes for science and engineering in India)\, National Bioscience award\, DBT (2009)\, (one of the highest for Life sciences in India)\, Swarnajayanti Fellowship (2005) (DST)\, B.M. Birla award (2001)\, Dr. B.C. Deb Memorial award (2009)\, CRSI Bronze Medal (2011)\, CRSI Silver Medal (2024) and Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. He is also Sir J. C. Bose National Fellow. SUMMARY:Guest Lecture on Powering Homogeneous Catalysis with Earth-Abundant Metals
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Department Guest Lecture by Dr Soumyadeep Chakrabortty\, Max-Planck-Institute für Kohlenforschung (The Max Planck Institute for Coal Research)\, Mülheim an der Ruhr\, Germany on December 10\, 2025. Dr Chakrabortty will deliver the talk on “Powering Homogeneous (Asymmetric) Catalysis with Earth-Abundant Metals”. \nAbstract of the Talk \nTransition metal catalyzed hydro-functionalization of alkenes and alkynes remains a cornerstone of homogeneous catalysis offering excellent economy for the synthesis of functionalized molecules. While precious-metal catalysts based on Rh\, Ru\, and Ir have long dominated this field\, concerns regarding cost\, scarcity\, and residual-metal toxicity have intensified efforts toward more sustainable alternatives. This presentation will showcase sustainable base-metal catalysis for stereoselective synthesis. A cobalt catalyst enables enantioselective hydrogenation of cyclic enamides via distinct mechanistic pathways [1-3]\, while an iron complex [4]\, promotes highly selective trans-hydrostannation of terminal alkynes through a modified Chalk–Harrod mechanism. Together these studies highlight the potential of earth-abundant metals in homogeneous catalysis. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Soumyadeep Chakrabortty received M.S. in chemistry at IISER Mohali\, India in 2019 on NHC chemistry and catalysis. He obtained his PhD at Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) Rostock\, Germany and stayed as research associate at LIKAT. Currently\, he is pursuing his post-doctoral research at Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (MPI-Kofo) at Mülheim a/d Ruhr. He was also awarded the DAAD Scholarship to visit Van’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Science (HIMS)\, University of Amsterdam (UvA) during PhD studies. His research focuses on design and application of novel ligands in transition metal catalysis for organic synthesis.
