SUMMARY:ACCMS Webinar #39
DESCRIPTION:The Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS) Global Centre organises the 39th Webinar on the topic “Emergent Phenomena Exploited at Oxide Heterointerfaces for Unconventional Computing” on April 28\, 2026. \nProf. Tamalika Banerjee\, Professor & Chair of Spintronics\, Functional Materials group\, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials\, University of Groningen\, Netherlands will deliver the webinar. Dr Darwin B Putungan\, Institute of Physics\, College of Arts and Sciences\, University of the Philippines will be the panellist. \nAbstract \nClassical computing based on von Neumann architecture is limited by a memory bottleneck\, high power consumption\, and heat dissipation. This is primarily due to the non-colocation of memory and processing units\, making the hardware sequential and deterministic. These challenges can be efficiently tackled by processing the information on the signal\, similar to what the human brain does. This has spurred the development of alternative\, domain-specific computing paradigms beyond the conventional von-Neumann architecture using analogue devices with memristive materials that can collocate memory and processing in the same functional unit. \nSeveral material systems from phase change memory\, Mott memories\, resistive random access memories\, ferroelectrics\, and ferromagnets have been actively researched\, demonstrating their potential as memristors exhibiting diverse functionalities. In this webinar\, I will discuss a popular choice of materials and devices\, based on oxide materials\, particularly those possessing competing and coexisting ground states. They offer a rich phase space and are ideal candidates\, where emergent phenomena arising at their heterointerfaces can be tailored by strain and doping and tuned by external stimuli such as temperature\, electric field\, and magnetic field. \nI will discuss two specific cases: In the first part\, I will discuss the areal downscaling of interface memristive devices directly integrated on a semiconducting Nb-doped SrTiO3 (Nb: STO) platform. We show a surprising enhancement in the memristive memory window\, while maintaining analog behavior\, contrary to expectations. The device designs on such semiconductors allow leveraging electric field effects at edges\, increasing the dynamic range in smaller devices with high endurance and low device and cycle variation\, down to the smallest devices with readout at low power. In the second part\, I will show how we uniquely exploit the entire network of strained films of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 by engineering the octahedron tilt at the atomic scale\, to demonstrate complex biologically plausible brain functionalities such as self-oscillation and integrate and fire neurons. The combination of an intrinsic coupled phase transition in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and octahedral distortion due to the textured surface of the LAlO3 substrate leads to multiple negative differential resistance (NDR) regimes in the network\, when electrically driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium\, at room temperature. By sweeping either voltage or current at room temperature\, we find that thermal effects trigger the film toward non-linear transport regimes. By engineering the time dynamics of such metastable phases\, we demonstrate voltage-tunable oscillators that dynamically oscillate at variable frequencies (kHz to MHz) and also show how orbital coupling effects\, induced by local strain\, enrich the phase space of operation of such oscillators. Finally\, I will discuss how the time dynamics of the leaky\, integrate\, and fire neuron network lead to the development of probabilistic bits\, useful for ultra-low power stochastic hardware.

SUMMARY:Department Colloquium on Primes in the Interval ([kx\,(k+1)x])
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is organising a Department Colloquium on the topic “Primes in the Interval ([kx\,(k+1)x]) (Joint work with R. Higa and R. Sugawara)” by Prof. Hiroki Aoki\, Associate Professor\, Department of Mathematics\, Faculty of Science and Technology\, Tokyo University of Science on June 04\, 2026. \nAbstract \nBertrand’s postulate: “For any natural number $n$\, there always exists a prime greater than $n$ and less than $2n$” was first conjectured in 1845 by Bertrand and proven by Chebyshev in 1852. Later\, Ramanujan made the proof considerably simpler\, and Erd\"{o}s gave a completely elementary and concise proof in 1932. Then\, is a slightly shorter interval in this postulate still valid? Here we consider the following proposition $P(k)$ for a natural number $k$: $P(k)$: “For a sufficiently large natural number $n$\, there always exists a prime between $kn$ and $(k+1)n$.” Here we say it Bertrand-type prime distribution theorem. In modern high-level mathematics\, by using the Prime Number Theorem (PNT)\, we can show that $P(k)$ is true for any $k$ easily. In addition\, we know an elementary proof of PNT\, although it is complex and long. However\, it is not at all clear whether a concise\, or even completely elementary\, proof exists for general $k$\, such as the one given by Ramanujan and Erd\”{o}s for Bertrand’s postulate. Previous research had suggested that a completely elementary proof of $P(k)$ based on the method of Erd\”{o}s is impossible when $k \ge 5$ (Balliet\, 2015). However\, by adding some new idea\, we find a completely elementary proof of $P(k)$ for $k \le 15 $ some new idea. \nThis colloquium provides an excellent opportunity to learn about recent advances in Number Theory and interact with an internationally renowned mathematician. All faculty members\, research scholars\, postdoc researchers\, and students are cordially invited to attend and participate in the discussion.

SUMMARY:10th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Adisak Boonchun
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research and Department of Physics\, SRM University-AP are jointly organising the 10th edition of the Eminent Guest Lecture Series on June 16\, 2026. The university welcomes Prof. Adisak Boonchun\, Associate Professor\, Department of Physics\, Faculty of Science\, Kasetsart University\, Bangkok\, Thailand\, to deliver a lecture on “Machine Learning Methods in Materials Simulation”. \nAbstract \nIn computational materials science\, we always face a big problem: choosing between accuracy and speed. Density Functional Theory (DFT) is very accurate for studying atoms\, but it requires too much computer power. Because of this\, standard DFT can only simulate small systems with a few hundred atoms for a very short time. This makes it very difficult to study real-world properties like heat transport\, defects\, or phase changes. \nThis lecture introduces how machine learning (ML) is breaking this limit. Today\, we demonstrate the use of Machine Learning Force Fields (MLFF). Instead of solving complex systems\, an on-the-fly MLFF model can learn the relationship between atomic structures and energy from a small set of DFT data. This allows us to run simulations with DFT-level accuracy but at the speed of simple classical models. \nAs a real example\, this talk will show how we use ML methods to calculate the lattice thermal conductivity of semiconductors. We will discuss how to train the model efficiently to simulate heat transport in large systems\, which is impossible with standard DFT alone. Finally\, we will talk about the current challenges of AI in physics and look at the future of automated materials simulation.

SUMMARY:11th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Yeoh Keat Hoe
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research and the Department of Physics are jointly organising the 11th Eminent Guest Lecture on the topic “Transition Metal-Doped 2D GaN with improved catalytic performance for lithium–sulfur batteries: Insights from a first-principles study” on June 18\, 2026. Prof. Yeoh Keat Hoe\, Associate Professor\, Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development\, Sunway University\, Malaysia\, will deliver the session. \nAbstract \nLithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are regarded as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage technologies due to their exceptionally high theoretical energy density. However\, their commercial deployment remains hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect and the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur reduction reaction (SRR)\, which involves a complex 16-electron conversion pathway. Recent experimental studies have demonstrated that coating sulfur cathodes with GaN nanosheets effectively suppresses polysulfide shuttling and improves cycling stability compared with conventional Li–S batteries. The polar nature of GaN promotes strong interactions with lithium polysulfides (LiPSs)\, while the relatively low atomic masses of Ga and N help preserve the high energy density of the system. Motivated by these findings\, we employed first-principles density functional theory calculations to systematically screen transition-metal (TM) single-atom dopants on two-dimensional (2D) GaN for enhanced SRR electrocatalysis. Our results reveal that the key liquid-to-solid conversion step\, Li₂S₄ → Li₂S\, exhibits a linear correlation with the SRR overpotential\, described by Based on the resulting volcano relationship\, Pd@GaN and Cu@GaN emerge as the most promising catalysts\, each exhibiting an overpotential of 0.43 V. Both single-atom catalysts remain thermally stable on the 2D GaN substrate and display strong adsorption toward high-order lithium polysulfides (Li₂Sₙ\, n = 4\, 6\, and 8)\, with binding energies ranging from −1.81 to −2.99 eV\, indicating excellent capability for suppressing the shuttle effect. These findings provide fundamental insights into the SRR mechanism on TM-doped 2D GaN and offer valuable design principles for developing high-performance single-atom catalysts for advanced Li–S batteries.
