SUMMARY:Queueing theoretic models for wireless multicast systems and power control
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the departmental Distinguished Lecture Series\, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising the first lecture on the topic “Queueing theoretic models for wireless multicast systems and power control via deep reinforcement learning”. Dr Vinod Sharma\, Professor in Electrical Communication Engineering\, IISc\, Bangalore will be the keynote speaker of the session which will be held on July 29\, 2021\, at 4.00 pm. \nAbstract:\nWe consider a wireless Base station (BS) transmitting on a downlink to multiple users. The BS has a finite number of files that the users can request. The users may have their own local caches. If a user requests a file and it is not in its cache\, the request goes to the BS. This model is the practical scenario of downloading/streaming videos from Netflix. In order to reduce the transmission load on the downlink\, we exploit the fact that the downlink is a broadcast channel and multiple users may be requesting the same file. This is accomplished by designing a novel multicast scheme in which all requests at the BS for the same file are merged together and are satisfied by a single transmission from the BS. This simple and natural scheme is shown to provide lower mean sojourn time compared to the currently popular coded caching schemes in literature and is much simpler to implement. We have also theoretically studied this queue and obtained approximate mean sojourn times. Next\, we have shown that considering the channel fading can actually wipe out most of the benefits of our multicast scheme. However\, we suggest a simple modification to the scheme which restores most of the gains. Furthermore\, we show that adaptively changing the transmit power at the BS based on the instantaneous channel gains of the users can further significantly reduce the mean sojourn times. To get optimal power control\, we use DQN\, a Deep Reinforcement Learning algorithm. It is modified to ensure that the long term power constraint is satisfied and that it tracks the time-varying channel and request statistics. \nAbout the Speaker:\nVinod Sharma completed his B.Tech Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi\, in 1978\, PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering\, from Carnegie Mellon University\, in 1984. He is Professor in Electrical Communication Engg.\, IISc\, since March 2000. Prior to it\, he was Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering\, IISc Bangalore. He was Chairman of the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering from July 2007 to November 2011. He was Assistant Professor\, Electrical and Communication Engg\, Northeastern University; and Visiting Faculty\, Electrical Engineering\, University of California\, Los Angeles. Dr Vinod’s research interests are in the area of Communication and Computer Networks\, Wireless Communication\, Sensor Networks\, Queueing Theory\, Information Theory and Statistical Estimation Theory. \nJoin this free informative webinar on July 29\, 2021\, from 4.00 pm onwards to gain research insights from the field expert.

SUMMARY:Insights into VLSI Design @ ECE Department
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SRM University-AP is organising a webinar session on the topic “Insights into VLSI Design @ ECE Department SRM AP” on August 14\, 2021\, Saturday\, at 6.00 pm. Dr Indranil Hatai\, Assistant Professor from the department will elucidate on the topic via the Zoom platform. \nVery-large-scale integration (VLSI) is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining thousands of transistors into a single chip. Before the introduction of VLSI technology\, most ICs had a limited set of functions they could perform. An electronic circuit might consist of a CPU\, ROM\, RAM and other glue logic. VLSI lets IC designers add all of these into one chip. With the advent of very large scale integration (VLSI) designs\, the number of applications of integrated circuits (ICs) in high-performance computing\, controls\, telecommunications\, image and video processing\, and consumer electronics has been rising at a very fast pace. The current cutting-edge technologies such as high resolution and low bit-rate video and cellular communications provide the end-users with a marvellous amount of applications\, processing power and portability. This trend is expected to grow rapidly\, with very important implications on VLSI design and systems design. \n(Information Source) \nJoin this informative webinar on August 14\, 2021\, to know more about the ECE department at SRM University-AP that grooms students to the electronics industry that has achieved phenomenal growth due to the rapid advances in large scale integration technologies.

SUMMARY:AI/ML algorithms for radio access networks
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is hosting the first instalment of the Distinguished Industry-Academia Interaction Lecture in the ECE DDIAL series. The event is scheduled on April 9\, 2022\, at 10.30 am. Dr. Serene Banerjee\, Master Researcher\, Ericsson Research\, will be the keynote speaker. She will deliver a talk on the topic ‘AI/ML Based Interference Diagnostics and Mitigation for Improved Quality of Service in Radio Access Networks’. \nAbstract of the Talk \nFor coverage and capacity optimization\, Uplink Power Control is one of the key steps\, in addition to antenna tilting and Downlink Power Control. For self-organizing networks\, automated algorithms for Uplink Power Control are a necessity. However\, Uplink Power Control affects the noise in the neighbouring cells. It is important to detect this interference to monitor uplink noise. Uplink noise due to power control manifests as static interference in the channel. The current state-of-the-art baseline model is based on regression models. We have proposed automated detection of static interference in the uplink channel of cells based on machine learning models. We have evaluated the same on customer data on LTE networks with high accuracy. The detected cells are subsequently used to correct the nominal power parameter through a proposed teacher-student model based on the primary cell and its neighbours. This approach shows better performance than the state-of-the-art baseline methods. The dual of static is dynamic interferences and can be attributed to traffic load\, Passive Intermodulation (PIM) and thermal noise\, etc. PIM identification is a major component in troubleshooting modern wireless communication systems. The introduction of carrier aggregation has increased PIM occurrences. Current state-of-the-art approaches include manual rule-based and hardware-based debugging. These approaches can detect the occurrence of PIM\, long after the event occurrence and result in incurring incidental costs. We propose an ensemble of time series-based machine learning and signal processing approaches that can automatically identify PIM in real-time by analyzing Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of the primary cell and its nearest neighbours. We validate our results for various environmental conditions in data available from LTE and 5G consumer networks. We have further extended the work to multi-frequency time series to handle finer time granularities and detect PIM anomalies in an online learning setting. We further propose a self-supervised reinforcement learning approach to predict PIM related anomalies before it happens. We forecast environmental conditions that give rise to PIM based on offline historical data and model to predict future occurrences. Experimental results are on real-world datasets comprising 50\,000+ cells which have shown to accurately predict PIM 60% of the time. To the best of our knowledge\, this is the first work\, where we are able to predict PIM anomalies before they happen. Post PIM-identification\, we propose a binary search-based solution that is amenable to real-time implementation. We show through simulations that this search in tandem with a reinforcement learning-based solution can dynamically mitigate and cancel PIM. Results show that the number of steps to converge\, to identify and mitigate the PIM in uplink frequency is reduced by a large factor. To summarize\, our contributions include using machine learning algorithms for: (1) robust interference classification\, (2) demonstrating p0-nominal recommender as teacher-student model\, (3) a times-series analysis-based PIM identification\, (4) extending the approach to multi-frequency time series\, and for online learning\, (5) demonstrating a self-supervised reinforcement learning approach to predict PIM anomalies before they happen\, and (6) mitigating PIM\, in spite of environmental unknowns\, by employing binary search in conjunction with ML/RL-based approaches. \nAbout the Speaker \nSerene Banerjee\, Master Researcher\, Ericsson Research\, has 17+ years of industrial experience after completing her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin\, under Prof Brian L Evans in 2004. She has completed BTech(H) in Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1999. At Ericsson\, she is focusing on developing AI/ML algorithms for Radio Access Networks. Prior to Ericsson\, she has worked with Texas Instruments\, HP\, and Johnson Controls. She has 23 peer-reviewed publications\, 9 granted patents\, and several pending.

SUMMARY:Ultra-low power and agile IC design for novel sensor nodes for the Internet of Things
DESCRIPTION:The Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly increased our awareness of the world and broadened the scope of our engagement with it. In the first episode of the ECE Department Guest Lecture Series\, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising a lecture on April 23\, 2022\, from 10.20 am to 12.00 noon. Dr Orazio Aiello\, Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa\, Italy\, will engage the audience on the topic Ultra-Low-Power and Agile IC Design for novel Sensor Nodes for the Internet of Things on that day. \nThe vision of a world where pervasive integrated electronic systems embedded in everyday life objects (e.g. household appliances\, surveillance cameras\, healthcare systems) are fully interconnected to collect\, process\, and exchange useful information requires energy-autonomous systems for distributed sensing and data acquisition. The low-cost requirement demands a small area\, low design effort\, digital-like shrinkage across CMOS generations\, and design/technology portability. The possibility to exploit the digital (automated) design flow even for analog building blocks can dramatically reduce the design effort of any system-on-chip that faces the analog signal. Since data processing is digital\, but most signals from the real world are analog\, almost any electronic device that interfaces with the surrounding environment will benefit from the outcomes of this investigation. In this framework\, the talk illustrates the concepts and the design flows which enable the implementation of analog functions by true digital circuits. \nBiography of the speaker: \nOrazio Aiello (Senior Member\, IEEE) received the BSc and MSc degrees (cum laude) from the University of Catania\, Italy\, in 2005 and 2008\, respectively\, the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) from the Scuola Superiore di Catania\, Italy\, in 2009\, and the PhD degree from the Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, in 2013.\,From 2008 to 2009\, he was an Analog IC Designer and an EMC Consultant for STMicroelectronics\, Castelletto\, Italy. In 2012\, he was a Visiting PhD. A student with Monash University\, Melbourne\, Australia. In 2013\, he was a Research Fellow in a joint project with FIAT-Chrysler Automobiles\, Turin. In 2014\, he joined NXP-Semiconductors\, Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, as a Mixed Signal IC Designer and an EMC Expert. In 2015 and 2016\, he was a Visiting Fellow with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia. Since 2015\, he has been working with the Green IC Group\, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)\, National University of Singapore\, where he has also been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual and a Global Fellow leading the ULPIoT project. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Genova\, Italy. His main research interests include energy-efficient analogue-mixed signal circuits and sensor interfaces. Dr Aiello is a member of the IEEE CASS Microlearning AdHoc Committee and is/was a Technical Program Committee Member of a number of conferences\, such as NORCAS and APCCAS. \nJoin this informative lecture with Dr Orazio Aiello on April 23\, 2022 at 10.20 am IST.

SUMMARY:An introduction to federated learning
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is hosting a seminar on September 16\, 2022\, at 4.00 pm as part of the Guest Lecture Series. Dr Anurag Singh\, Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy\, NIT Delhi\, will deliver a talk on the topic “Federated Learning”. \nAbstract of the talk \nThe most crucial resource for any business\, individual\, or person in the world is data. Everyone\, whether an individual or an institution\, wants to prevent a data breach. High-quality data must be subjected to machine learning algorithms. The model is trained using traditional machine learning techniques\, which save data to one server. There is a chance that this method will expose personal information. A machine learning technique called federated learning (FL) enables machine learning models to train on various datasets located on various sites without sharing data. Without putting training data in a centralised location\, it enables the development of a common global model. Additionally\, it permits personal information to stay in local places\, lowering the risk. \nA new area of machine learning called federated learning already offers greater advantages than conventional machine learning techniques. \nData Security: Training data is kept locally on the devices\, negating the need for a data pool. \nData variety: Heterogeneous data since it incorporates information from various users. \nReal-time continuous learning: Client data is used to enhance models continuously. \nFederated Learning is applied in the field of IoT\, Healthcare\, smartphones\, Advertising\, Autonomous Vehicles etc. \nSpeaker’s Profile \nDr Anurag Singh is currently working as the Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy at NIT Delhi. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research areas are Network Theory\, Dynamics on/of Networks\, Opinion Dynamics\, Epidemic Modeling\, Intelligent transportation system etc. Dr Anurag Singh has teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught courses ranging from the introductory level to specialized courses in Computer Science and Engineering\, and Mathematics. Currently\, he is mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels at the National Institute of Technology Delhi\, India. In addition\, he has also been supervising PhD students. He has around 70 publications featured across various leading journals and three DST-funded projects to his credit.

SUMMARY:Prof. Irudaya Rajan on Kerala Migration Survey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has become a worldwide phenomenon in the 21st century. Migratory tendencies have been inherent in the context of Kerala\, and it has been shaping the economic and social situation. The economic boom within the Gulf countries gave migration a considerable boost\, reaching its peak in terms of both numbers and remittance. Ironically\, Kerala\, of late\, is witnessing a reverse migration of labour. On this note\, the Department of Economics is organising a distinguished lecture titled “Big Data on Migration” on April 19\, 2024. Distinguished academician and scholar\, Prof. Irudya Rajan\, Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram will deliver the lecture. \nJoin the lecture for a resourceful session! \nAbstract \nThe first Kerala Migration Survey started in 1998 as a part of understanding the impact of migration on individuals\, households\, communities\, the economy\, and society using a stratified multistage random sampling of 10\,000 households. Over the period of the last 25 years\, our sample size has increased from 10000 in 1998 to 15000 in 2008 and 20000 in 2023. The estimates produced through this survey have become an important source for the Government of Kerala for its policy-making decisions regarding migration governance\, particularly return migration during the COVID-19 crisis. Interestingly\, Kerala model migration surveys have been replicated in the following states of India: Tamil Nadu\, Gujarat\, Punjab\, Goa\, Jharkhand and Odisha. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Irudya Rajan is a seasoned academician with over 30+ years of teaching experience across the country. He was conferred with a PhD in Demography from the International Institute for Population Sciences\, the University of Mumbai\, in 1989. His research interests include International Migration\, the Economics of Ageing and Demography\, and Population Ageing. An esteemed scholar\, Prof. Rajan has published in various reputed international and national journals\, book chapters and research projects funded by global organisations. He currently holds the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor\, at the Department of Economics\, SRM University-AP and Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram. Prior to this\, he held the position of Professor\, at the Centre for Development Studies\, Thiruvananthapuram. \nSince 1998\, Prof. Rjan coordinated eight large-scale migration surveys in Kerala with Professor K C Zachariah. The success of the Kerala Migration Survey urged neighbouring Indian states like\, Goa (2008)\, Punjab (2009)\, Tamil Nadu (2015)\, and Gujarat (2011) to replicate the same. He also developed the first longitudinal Ageing Survey in India (Kerala) in 2004 and repeated the same every three years. The first Kerala Ageing Survey (KAS) completed its seventh wave in 2022. The second KAS which began in 2013\, completed its fourth wave in 2022.
