DESCRIPTION:Department of Economics recently organised an expert talk on Gender in Development Discourse by renowned expert Dr Sangita Dutta. The event was a great success\, with students and faculty members engaging in a stimulating discussion on the role of gender in international development. \nDr Dutta shared her valuable insights and research findings on how gender dynamics impact development outcomes. She highlighted the importance of addressing gender inequalities and promoting gender equality in all aspects of development work. \nThe event served as a platform for students to broaden their understanding of gender issues and learn from an esteemed expert in the field. We are grateful to Dr. Sangita Dutta for her enlightening talk and look forward to more such enriching events at SRM University-AP. \nAbstract: \nDevelopment discourse has undergone significant changes in recent years\, and there is a need to contextualise gender in development discourse. Gender is no longer an equity concern. It is important for the three pillars of development governance- equity\, efficiency and sustainability. There has been a shift from growth paradigm to the holistic sustainability approaches. UN Sustainable Development Goals are the cornerstones of global development governance and Gender Equality (SDG5) is one of the goals to be achieved by 2030. The concept of Women in Development or WID emerged in the early 1970s. The rationale behind the concept was that women can contribute productively to the economic development of any country. The main objective was to show the synergy between involving women and economic growth. One of the important issues was equal employment opportunities for women. The concept of Gender in Development or GID developed in the 1980s which was a holistic approach. Gender mainstreaming as a strategic approach to gender equality gained attention after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 1995. Gender mainstreaming mandates integration of gender perspectives in all policy formulations\, programs\, and projects. In this context\, Dr Dutta Gupta will discuss some of her research papers in gender and their role in development discourse.
