SUMMARY:Prof. S. Irudaya Rajan Explicates on the Future of Migration
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Economics is hosting a special lecture on The Future of Migration by the distinguished visiting faculty Prof S Irudaya Rajan. The lecture will explore the future of migration\, analysing its economic implications and developmental impacts. The lecture will also offer insight into the evolving migration patterns and their role in transforming India’s demographic shifts and growth trajectory. \nAbout the Speaker: \nProf. S. Irudaya Rajan is a renowned demographer and migration expert\, currently serving as Chairman of the International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD) in Kerala\, India. Prior to this\, he was a Professor at the Centre for Development Studies. He is the Founder Editor in Chief of Migration and Development (Sage) and the editor of two Routledge series – India Migration Report and South Asia Migration Report. He has coordinated nine large-scale migration surveys in Kerala since 1998 (with K.C. Zachariah) and replicated the Kerala model of migration surveys in other states\, including Goa (2008)\, Punjab (2009)\, Tamil Nadu (2015)\, and Odisha (2023) and has been instrumental in similar surveys in Gujarat (2011)\, and Jharkhand (2023). SUMMARY:Seminar on Cash Transfers and the Politics of Welfare
DESCRIPTION:On February 18\, 2026\, the Department of Economics\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA) is organising a half-day seminar on “Cash Transfers and the Politics of Welfare: Rethinking Social Protection in India”.  \nConvened and co-convened by Dr Aruolipsa Das and Dr Boddu Surjana\, this seminar will grace the presence of three eminent speakers; Dr Dipa Sinha\, Associate Professor\, Center for the Study of Indian Economy\, Azim Premji University; Prof. R Ramakumar\, Professor\, Centre for Study of Developing Economies\, School of Development Studies\, Tata Institute of Social Sciences\, Mumbai\, and Mr Akshay Limal\, Senior Consultant\, Nutrition\, UNICEF India\, Odisha. \nLargely\, the seminar will explore themes around the evolution of welfare instruments in India\, the economic trade-offs of vash and in-kind transfers\, and contemporary debates around political economy. While India’s social protection system is being reshaped by technological change and advancement\, policy reform\, shifting development priorities that are redefining both the purpose and politics of welfare delivery\, this seminar will also encompass: \n\nShift from in-kind programs (TPDS\, Mid-Day Meals) to cash-based transfers (Direct Debit Transfers)\nTransition driven by goals of efficiency\, flexibility\, and financial inclusion\nWelfare transfers increasingly politicised through narratives of “freebies” and revadi politics\nTensions between efficiency\, equity\, fiscal sustainability\, and distributive justice in social protection policy
