SUMMARY:ACCMS Webinar-41 by Prof. Stefan Blügel
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research is organising the 41st webinar under the Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS) Global Centre on July 28\, 2026. Prof. Stefan Blügel\, Quantum Theory of Materials (PGI-1)\, Peter Grünberg Institute\, Institute for Theoretical Physics\, RWTH Aachen University\, will deliver the webinar on the topic “Chiral Magnons and Anisotropic Damping in Metallic Altermagnets”. \nAbstract \nAltermagnetism\, a novel class of magnetic order\, has recently attracted the scientific interest. Combining the favourable properties of ferromagnets\, such as spin polarised conduction electrons\, with the advantages of antiferromagnets\, such as zero net magnetisation and high-frequency switching\, it is a promising area of research [1]. While the ground state properties of altermagnets have been studied\, their dynamic properties\, such as magnon dispersions\, remain elusive. Understanding these properties includes the investigation of magnon excitations\, which is essential for the development of spintronic and magnonic devices based on altermagnets. In altermagnets\, the chiral magnon degeneracy of antiferromagnets is lifted along certain wave-vector directions and chiral magnons emerge as a consequence of exchange interactions and crystal symmetry\, rather than from spin-orbit coupling. Unlike chiral magnets\, where chirality originates from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems\, altermagnetic chiral magnons arise from the momentum-dependent spin splitting enforced by symmetry\, even in centrosymmetric materials. In this presentation\, results are presented of our recent investigation [2] on the interplay between electronic band spin splitting and chiral magnon excitations in a series of metallic g-wave altermagnets of 3d-transition-metal pnictides\, TmPn\, in the NiAs structure with a 3d element (Tm=V\, Cr)\, and a pnicogen (Pn= As\, Sb\, Bi) using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory [3]. The latter theory allows a coherent investigation of Stoner and magnon excitations in metallic magnets. For example\, we find that the magnon damping due to Stoner excitations is highly wavevector-dependent\, reaching substantial values in specific Brillouin zone regions. I relate to recent RIXS experiments [4-6] on CrSb that confirmed the presence of polarization-dependent magnon modes.

SUMMARY:Department of Computer Science and Engineering to Host Webinar on Ph.D. Admissions 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at SRM University-AP will host a webinar titled “Ph.D. Admissions 2026: Everything You Need to Know\,” designed to walk prospective scholars through the admission process\, eligibility\, fellowships\, and research opportunities available at the university. The session will be held online via Zoom on July 29\, 2026\, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. \nThe webinar will feature two sessions from CSE faculty. Dr V M Manikandan\, Associate Professor & Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering\, will open with “Why Pursue a Ph.D.? Building a Successful Research Career\,” addressing the motivations and mindset behind a research career. Dr Shaiju Panchikkil\, Assistant Professor in the department\, will then walk participants through the “Ph.D. Admission Process at SRM University-AP\,” covering the university’s specific eligibility criteria and application pathway. Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact directly with the faculty and raise questions relevant to their own research interests. \nThere is no registration fee\, though registration is mandatory in advance. Participants who attend at least 80% of the session and submit the feedback form will receive an e-certificate of participation. \nThe webinar is coordinated by Dr Aditya Kumar Sahu and Dr Shaiju Panchikkil\, both Assistant Professors in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. \nAs SRM AP continues to expand its doctoral research ecosystem\, sessions like this aim to make the path into research more transparent for prospective scholars — connecting them directly with the faculty guiding that work\, well before they submit an application. \n  \n  \nKey Details \n\nDate: July 29\, 2026\nTime: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM\nMode: Online Webinar (Zoom)

SUMMARY:Expert Talk on Host–Pathogen Interactions
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biological Sciences is organising an Expert Talk on “SWR1 Chromatin Remodeler Orchestrates the Molecular Dialogue Between Pathogen and Host” by Prof. Saravanan Matheshwaran\, Associate Professor\, Microbial Adaptation and Chromatin Dynamics Laboratory\, Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering\, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. \nDr Saravanan is a distinguished researcher in the areas of microbial adaptation\, chromatin dynamics\, and host–pathogen interactions. This expert lecture will benefit students\, research scholars\, and faculty by providing insights into cutting-edge research and lending opportunities for future academic collaborations. \nAbstract \nChromatin remodelers such as SWR1 regulate gene expression through ATP dependent deposition of the histone variant H2A.Z\, thereby coordinating genome stability\, transcription\, and cellular adaptation. While the functions of SWR1 have been extensively studied in yeast\, its role in fungal pathogenesis and host interaction remains largely unexplored. Here\, we investigated the role of the SWR1 chromatin remodeling complex in the maize smut fungus Ustilago maydis by deleting its catalytic ATPase subunit\, swr1. The Δswr1 mutant exhibited elongated pseudohyphal morphology\, hypersensitivity to DNA damage\, and enhanced melanin production\, indicating defects in genome maintenance\, cell cycle progression\, and metabolic homeostasis. Transcriptome analysis revealed widespread transcriptional reprogramming\, including altered expression of genes involved in secondary metabolism\, stress adaptation\, nutrient transport\, and melanin biosynthesis. Dual RNA sequencing of infected maize tissues demonstrated that SWR1 is indispensable for successful biotrophic development and coordinated cross-kingdom gene regulation. The Δswr1 mutant showed reduced expression of fungal effectors\, carbohydrate-active enzymes\, transporters\, and iron acquisition systems required for host colonization. Correspondingly\, maize infected with the mutant displayed extensive transcriptional reprogramming\, including activation of defense responses\, cell wall reinforcement\, hormone signaling\, reactive oxygen species homeostasis\, and nutrient metabolism. Together\, these findings establish SWR1 as a central epigenetic regulator that integrates fungal metabolism\, virulence\, and host transcriptional reprogramming to promote successful biotrophic interaction between U. maydis and maize.

SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture on the Emancipatory Potential of Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Political Science\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA)\, is organising a Distinguished Guest Lecture on the topic “The Emancipatory Potential of Poetry in Decolonising Development”. Dr Nita Mishra\, Associate Professor\, Department of Politics & Public Administration at the University of Limerick\, Ireland\, will deliver the session. \nIn the lecture\, Dr Mishra will examine the emancipatory potential of poetry as a methodological tool in Development Studies\, emphasising its role in amplifying marginalised voices and challenging dominant development narratives. The talk will also explore how poetic inquiry disrupts traditional power dynamics in research\, positioning marginalised individuals not merely as subjects but as active agents in the knowledge production process\, while acknowledging the challenges faced in legitimising such methods within the development narrative in academia.
