SUMMARY:The emerging landscape of electric vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Electric vehicles are the new paradigm of the automobile industry. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is arranging an invited talk on the Emerging landscape of electric vehicles-The new era of mobility to discuss how India is gearing up for this huge opportunity and the challenges that come along with the new pattern of mobility. Dr Deb Mukherjee\, the Managing Director of Omega Seiki Mobility Pvt Ltd\, will handle the session. \nAbout the talk \nGlobally\, almost all OEMs have made plans to switch to nonfossil fuel vehicles. Data shows that out of global production of 90 million/annum\, 76% will switch to electric vehicles by 2040. In India\, this transition has also started in the last five years with Government intervention. In the field of 2 and 3-wheelers\, we are seeing a significant switch to Electrics in the previous 5 years. Government is incentivising demand with incentives like FAME2. In addition to this\, on the supply side\, there are PLI schemes\, etc. Moreover\, Government is targeting a 30% conversion to electric vehicles by 2030. Given the Indian automotive industry numbers\, this will be a massive scale of electric vehicles in the country. Apart from domestic demand\, EVs have the potential to become one of the biggest exporters for India\, both in vehicles and components. The opportunity size is more than $500Bn. \nTo prepare for this tremendous opportunity\, we need to start large-scale manufacturing of cells\, batteries\, powertrains\, and other electronic components. The supply side challenges are equally enormous as there is a severe lack of materials\, technology\, and supply chain in the country. The most important question is how India is preparing for this mega opportunity and the challenges in this new paradigm of mobility. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Deb Mukherjee has done his graduation from NIT Bhopal in the field of Mechanical engineering. In the year 1998\, he grabbed his MTech from IIT DELHI. Moving further\, in 2009\, he did his PhD research on “Evaluating competitiveness of Indian auto components industry with Chinese industry” using the Global Competitiveness model of WEF and published several papers in journals on industrial competitiveness. He had done a lot in science and technology to serve society. Presently\, he is the Managing director of Omega Seiki Mobility private limited organisation.

SUMMARY:Archaeometric studies on ancient potsherds in the Indian context
DESCRIPTION:Pottery has always been of prime importance in archaeological studies; however\, the emphasis has largely been on morphology and decoration. Scientific studies on archaeological pottery are often essential to the correct interpretation of pottery evidence. Although analytical studies on archaeological potsherds in India have been in practice for a long time\, there is a lack of convergence of analytical and archaeological approaches to provide a meaningful and systematic study of the material culture of past societies. \nThe School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is organising a special lecture on Archaeometric studies on ancient potsherds in the Indian context which will be handled by Dr Satish C Pandey\, Associate Professor and Head of the Department\, National Museum Institute\, Noida\, Delhi. He is a conservationist with major interests in archaeological and heritage conservation sciences. \nBrief about the talk \nThe technological analysis of pottery looks beyond the mere physical dimensions of the materiality and is concerned with the procedures\, skills\, materials\, and techniques used to produce the pottery. The technical information about the pottery fabric assimilated with its archaeological context may allow a comprehensive understanding of the Chaîne opératoire of the pottery technology through different phases of human existence. Archaeometric studies of pottery are fundamental to the classification and characterisation of pottery\, providing relevant data\, among other aspects\, about its production\, function\, and social meaning. \nMost studies carried out in India are fragmentary in nature\, focusing mainly on material characterisation and provenance determination of the potsherd used in investigations\, and have been unsuccessful in putting the scientific information back in a broader archaeological context. A systematic study of pottery technology ought to establish a link not only with the cultural phase it belongs to but also with the preceding cultures influencing its development. \nSince the archaeological settlements provide stratigraphic sequences ranging from the pre-Harappan phase to the mature Harappan phase\, the excavated pottery assemblages from these sequences provide an excellent opportunity to study the development of pottery technology through these phases. This study intents to scientifically investigate the technological development of pottery production in Harappan civilisation\, one of the earliest civilisations across the globe.

SUMMARY:Invited talk on SolarPV Hybrid Distributed PowerGen System
DESCRIPTION:The Power and Control Society\, on behalf of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering\, is conducting an invited talk on SolarPV Hybrid Distributed PowerGen System for Rural & Urban Microgrid Applications.Dr Jayesh Barve\, Principal Engineer (Controls & Optimisation)\, GE Global Research\, Bangalore\, and President\, Automatic Control and Dynamic Optimisation Society\, will be handling the session\, covering motivation\, technical background\, and some perspectives based on his industrial R&D and pilot-plant experiences related to HDP microgrids. \nAbout the talk \nAn emerging trend in power systems technologies is the shift in the share of power generation from traditional large\, centralised fossil-fuel-based thermal power-generation systems (coupled to large transmission-distribution grids) to new Renewable and/or Hybrid Distributed Power generation (HDP) systems (EITHER off-grid OR grid-tied) forming a small\, local power generation- distribution systems called as nano/micro/mini-grids. Such HDP systems and micro-grids can help solve the universal energy access problem by providing electricity in remote\, rural areas at lower carbon footprints. Whereas\, in urban areas\, similar scaled-up\, grid-tied HDP microgrids can help reduce energy costs and carbon footprints for commercial and industrial facilities\, campuses\, and buildings. \nThe talk will highlight Physical and Digital transformation covering some details of a specific HDP solution that combines novel HDP Physical Systems (i.e.\, SolarPV\, Battery\, IC Engine\, Power-Energy Controls\, and Management\, etc.) integrated with state-of-art HDP Digital platform (i.e.\, cyber-secured Edge- CloudApp based advanced IIOT automation platform) developed by speaker & his team at GE Global Research Center\, Bangalore and with several plants successfully deployed & operational globally last few years. Finally\, a brief overview will be provided describing the expansion of this work to an urban microgrid energy management platform. \nAbout the speaker \nDr Jayesh Barve has more than thirty years of experience in industrial R&D and academia. He has filed 20+ global patent applications and 50+ research papers in peer-reviewed prestigious international journals and conferences. His R&D contributions have resulted in more than 15 industrial products/TechPoC/ for GE/TCS/other industries. He has been an active senior member of various international and national-level reputed professional organisations like IEEE\, IFAC-ACDOS\, and ISA. Dr Jayesh Barve also holds GE’s 6-sigma green belt and TRIZ Innovation Level-1 certification. SUMMARY:Navier stokes equations: A million dollar open problem
DESCRIPTION:The second lecture in the Distinguished Lecture Series organised by the Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP will be held on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm. Prof Amiya Kumar Pani from the Department of Mathematics\, IIT Bombay\, will elucidate the lecture on the topic “Navier Stokes Equations: A Million Dollar Open Problem”. \nOn August 8\, 1900\, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about 23 open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. This influenced the decision of a recently formed Clay Mathematical Institute (CMI) to announce the seven Millennium Prize Problems in the CMI Millennium Meeting held on May 24\, 2000. One such problem is the theme of the present talk. Now it is widely accepted that the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid with moderate velocity is described by the Navier-Stokes Equations. Although these equations were written down in the 19th century\, the existing mathematical results are not adequate to unfold the secrets hidden in the Navier-Stokes equations. \nIn this talk\, Prof Amiya shall concentrate on a brief description of this problem\, mathematical model\, a quick look at history\, what is known at this point\, some important approaches and what is possibly needed. Finally\, he will conclude the talk with a note on the present state of Indian applied mathematics and whether we are ready to contribute towards this millennium problem. \nAbout the Speaker: \nProf Amiya K Pani is Professor at IIT\, Bombay. He is well known for his research work in the area of numerical approximations of partial differential equations. His expertise includes construction\, stability\, and convergence analysis of finite element methods\, finite difference schemes\, orthogonal spline collocation methods for free boundary problems\, partial integrodifferential equations\, coupled equations in Oil Reservoir Studies\, evolutionary variational inequalities\, and scientific computations for industrial applications. Professor Pani is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences\, India. He was awarded the Best Young Mathematician for his outstanding contributions to Numerical Analysis\, Partial Differential Equations\, and Industrial Mathematics by the Indian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM). \nTune in to this intriguing lecture on Navier stokes equations on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm.

SUMMARY:Crack exams with ease: lessons from the maestro
DESCRIPTION:Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organises Invited Talk to prepare students for the upcoming competitive exams \nHigher Studies or Job? Students are often torn between these two after the completion of their undergraduate studies. Whereas getting a job after B.E./B.Tech is not that difficult\, but securing one’s dream job may not be that easy. Some students prefer to take admission in a reputed institution and pursue higher studies\, some might want to join R&D in well-established companies. A few might be even interested in securing employment in the public sector. The choices vary from one student to another depending on their merit\, financial stability and personal preferences. SRM University-AP always encourages students to go for their choices. A good pay package is only useful when it comes with a job of one’s inclination. However\, first of all\, one has to be aware of the choices he/she has. Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organises an invited talk on the two of the most sought after opportunities for engineers after their undergraduate studies- Indian engineering Services and GATE. \nIndian Engineering Service offers highly prestigious employment under the Government of India. The IES is a very specialised and technical service. Only engineering graduates from recognised universities are eligible to take the entrance examination. Even postgraduates with specific specialisations such as wireless communications\, radio engineering\, electronics\, or radiophysics are eligible to apply in certain posts. A career in Indian Engineering Services allows an engineer to administer a large segment of technical challenges in the public sector economy\, consisting of Indian Railways\, Power\, Telecommunications\, Central Water engineering\, and Defence service of Engineers\, Central Engineering Service. \nOn the other hand\, the purpose of the GATE exam is to test students’ knowledge and understanding of their undergraduate level subjects in Engineering and Sciences. A misconception among the students is that the GATE exam is only necessary for the ME. /M. Tech aspirants who want to pursue a career in academia. But\, the GATE score of the candidate is also valued by several public sector undertakings (PSU) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions or to be enlisted in the Fellowship Programs of CSIR or applying for scholarships in ME/M.Tech\, and many more. \nHowever\, qualifying these examinations is not a piece of cake. It requires rigorous planning\, perseverance and above all\, hard work. But\, there is always some strategic points which can make a student stand out in the exams. Dr Murali Prasad\, the distinguished guest of the session\, will brief you on some strategic points that will help you immensely in cracking the examinations. Dr Prasad has over 30 years of teaching experience\, especially for competitive exams like GATE\, IES in ACE Engineering Academy\, Hyderabad. He has completed his graduation in engineering from The Institution of Engineers\, Calcutta. He pursued his M tech from Pondicherry Engineering College and later obtained his PhD in WiMAX from JNTU Anantapur. Dr Prasad has published six patents and currently working as a Professor at Vardhaman College of Engineering\, Hyderabad. Join the session tomorrow at 10.30 am and learn the masterstrokes from the expert to crack competitive exams like GATE and IES.
