SUMMARY:A Deep Insight into School Mathematics Education Research
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is organising the eighth distinguished lecture by Prof. K Subramaniam\, a renowned academician and scholar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai\, India on April 19\, 2023. This resourceful session will be on the topic “How can Education Research make a Difference? A Perspective from Mathematics Education”. The talk will elaborate on school mathematics education research with an emphasis on critical education research and pedagogical research. \nJoin the session and gain insight into how education research can play a significant role in influencing the institution of education itself! \nAbstract \nWe must remember that education is a complex social institution shaped by larger social\, political and economic forces. Research in science or mathematics education makes a small but vital contribution to this constellation. The focus of the talk will be on school mathematics education research\, with emphasis on distinguishing critical educational research from curricular and pedagogical research\, arguing that both are needed. Drawing on the curricular and pedagogical research done at the Homi Bhabha Centre\, some examples will be discussed on how research can make small but significant contributions. The examples will also serve to communicate a picture of what such research involves. The speaker will also highlight some agenda for work within research as well as finding institutional homes for such research. \nAbout the Speaker \nK Subramaniam (Ravi) is a Professor at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education\, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai\, India. His main research interests are the design and organisation of core areas of the middle-grade mathematics curriculum such as fractions\, proportional thinking\, geometric measurement and algebra\, and the specialized knowledge that teachers need to teach effectively at this level. His other interests are the integration of out-of-school knowledge and school learning of mathematics\, frameworks for analysis of mathematics teaching and the role of visualization in the learning of science. He has contributed to the work of curriculum and textbook committees and to in-service teacher professional development in India. He has also played a central role in building and nurturing a community of mathematics educators in India. \nProf. Subramaniam has also contributed to formulating education policy through his participation in the focus group on the teaching of mathematics\, the syllabus committees for NCF-2005\, and the curriculum and textbook committees for the state of Maharashtra (since 2011). He is a member of the National Council of Teacher Education (2013-present). He has a BTech in Aeronautical engineering from IIT Madras and a PhD in philosophy from IIT Bombay. His PhD dissertation was on aspects of the philosophy of history\, with a focus on the Continental Philosopher Heidegger.

SUMMARY:Mathematical Discourse by Dr Narravula Harshvardhan Reddy
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP is organising an engaging Guest Lecture on June 14\, 2023. Dr Narravula Harshavardhan Reddy will speak on Finite Element Techniques for Thin-shell Deployable Space Structures. \n  \n  \nAbstract \nPart 1: Rotation-free finite element analysis \nWhile the majority of analytical analyses of plates and shells rely on Kirchhoff-Love (KL) formulations put forth for thin plates and shells\, modern finite element formulations draw upon the Reissner-Mindlin (RM) theory for moderately thick shells. The finite element formulations based on RM theory treat translations and rotations as independent variables and are advantageous due to their demand for only C0-continuity of the geometry between elements and the use of relatively simple shape functions. Nonetheless\, RM elements suffer from various locking phenomena such as shear locking and are inefficient in analysing very thin shells. With the emergence of stronger materials like carbon fibre-reinforced composites and the realisation of lightweight structures with extremely small thicknesses\, KL finite element formulations utilising only translations as the degrees of freedom are gaining prominence. This talk discusses two such rotation-free finite element formulations: Onate’s EBST [1] and NURBS-based isogeometric analysis [2] for thin-shell structures. \nPart 2: h-adaptive finite element analysis \nThin-shell deployable structures\, including booms and longerons\, undergo complex deformations such as localised folding and buckling\, and snap-through instabilities. These deformations are often accompanied by moving contact surfaces. Nonlinear Finite element analysis of such behaviours requires highly dense meshes in the regions of interest. Since most of the deployable structures such as booms are very long in one dimension compared to the others\, mesh density must be high throughout the domain of the analysis leading to a high computation cost. The computation cost can be reduced by adapting the mesh to the deformation throughout the geometrically nonlinear analysis. This talk focuses on h-adaptive mesh refinement for thin-shell deployable structures. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Narravula Harshavardhan Reddy is a resourceful Mathematician and researcher\, who has made significant contributions to the understanding and application of mathematical principles in various domains. His impressive academic foundations in Mechanical Engineering from IIT\, Guwahati and Masters and PhD in Aeronautical Sciences from California Institute of Technology\, Pasadena\, CA backed with his extensive experience of about a decade in the realm is truly inspiring. He has 10 noteworthy publications and 4 distinguished talks to his credit. \nJoin the engaging discourse with Dr Reddy and members of the faculty !
