SUMMARY:9th Eminent Guest Lecture on Sustainable Clean Thorium Energy
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research\, SRM University-AP hosts the 9th Eminent Guest Lecture by renowned academician Dr Ganapati Myneni\, Director\, VT-India Nuclear Energy Partnership and Adjunct Faculty\, Virginia Tech\, Virginia\, USA on March 23\, 2026. \nTitle of the Talk – “Clean Air and Water with Sustainable Clean Thorium Energy” \nAbstract \nClean air and water are essential to the health of living beings. Solar\, wind\, and hydro power sources are helping to some extent to reduce the polluting CO2 and NOX emissions. However\, we need distributed base load reliable power that can also serve as backup to intermittent renewable energy sources. Nuclear is the obvious choice. \nIn this presentation\, let us explore the Photonuclear eMMR (Advanced Subcritical Molten Salt Reactor)\, which is being developed by BSCE (Brahma Sakti Clean Energy) as a collaboration with many international Institutions. The eMMR represents a paradigm shift due to its unique U-233 breeder and burner disruptive technology. The eMMR utilises a molten salt (FLiBe) with the addition of ThF fuel. The photo neutrons that will allow breeding of U-233 from fertile Thorium are internally produced with commercially available electron accelerators that are highly reliable. These low-cost eMMRs of 1 MWth are uniquely positioned to be built at several Institutions for training the much-needed nuclear workforce for fulfilling the SHANTI Act of 2025. \nThe Photonuclear eMMR provides a scalable\, non-proliferative solution to the industrial sector’s thermal energy demands as well\, offering a path to full decarbonization without compromising high-temperature performance.

SUMMARY:UDL#23 - Is AI Really Useful for Materials Science?
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research is organising the 23rd edition of the University Distinguished Lecture inviting Prof. Stefano Sanvito\, Professor and Chair of Condensed Matter Theory\, School of Physics and Director\, CRANN (Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices)\, Trinity College Dublin\, Ireland. \nTitle of the Lecture: “Is AI Really Useful for Materials Science?” \nAbstract \nAI and machine learning have rapidly become important tools for our daily life\, providing assistance over many tasks. These\, however\, often concern relatively low-stake domains\, such as idea generation\, text summarisation\, automated paper writing/ reviewing\, etc. The physical sciences\, however\, demand far more: accuracy at the level of experimental validation\, reproducibility across thousands of steps and the orchestration of a vast and diverse toolset. \nIn this talk I will describe our attempts at integrating machine-learning and AI methods into materials science\, by looking at rather different domains. Firstly\, I will discuss a machine-learning scheme for predicting the Curie temperature of ferromagnets\, which uses solely the chemical composition of a compound as feature and experimental data as target [1]. In particular\, I will discuss how to develop meaningful feature attributes for magnetism and how these can be informed by experimental and theoretical results. Furthermore\, I will show how the experimental data can be mined from published scientific literature with the help of natural language processing tools [2]. \nThen\, I will describe how an accurate description of the structure of materials\, which is amenable to be used with machine learning\, can offer a quantum-chemistry-accurate description of local properties at virtually no computational costs. This is based on a newly developed cluster expansion formulated in terms of Jacobi-Legendre polynomials. Such general framework allows us to construct\, on the same footing\, extremely accurate force fields [3] as well as converged electron densities [4]. These can both be integrated in material-discovery workflows generating unprecedented speedup. \nFinally\, I will present two examples of how visual-graphic techniques can be integrated into materials science. In the first case autoencoder neural networks will be used to denoise scanning electron transmission microscopy images [5]\, thus allowing us to perform microscopy on fragile samples\, which rapidly degrade under electron irradiation. In the second case\, I will use movie- enhancement methods to provide high-resolution tomographic maps of complex materials complexes [6]. Importantly\, the same method can also be used for medical imaging and can be incorporated in medical devices. \n[1] Physical Review Materials 3\, 104405 (2019). \n[2] npj Computational Materials 9\, 222 (2023). \n[3] Physical Review B 108\, 094102 (2023). \n[4] npj Computational Materials 9\, 87 (2023). \n[5] Machine Learning: Science and Technology 4\, 015025 (2023). \n[6] Nature Communications 15\, 7962 (2024).

SUMMARY:Research Seminar on Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a Research Seminar on “Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and Nobel Prize in Physics – 2025” by Dr Krishna Prasad Maity\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Physics\, SRM University-AP. \nAbstract \nQuantum tunneling\, proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926\, is a unique quantum phenomenon with no classical equivalent. It has been observed in microscopic systems like alpha decay and scanning tunneling microscopy but remained unverified at the macroscopic scale for decades. \nThis year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke\, Michel H Devoret\, and John M Martinis from the University of California for observing macroscopic quantum tunneling in a superconducting tunnel junction\, known as the Josephson junction. Their experiments measured the voltage across the junction\, corresponding to the quantum phase difference between two superconductors\, and revealed that the particles occupy discrete\, quantized energy levels. This pioneering work laid the foundation for qubits—the basic units of future quantum computers. In this talk\, I will discuss their discovery and its significance for the future of quantum technology. \nJoin for an interactive and insightful session!

SUMMARY:6th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Somnath Bhattacharyya
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research is organising the 6th Eminent Guest Lecture on October 27\, 2025. Prof. Somnath Bhattacharyya\, Founder and Head of Nano-Scale Transport Physics Laboratory\, University of the Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg\, South Africa\, will deliver a distinguished lecture on “Diamond-Based Hybrid Qubit System for Quantum Computation Technology”. \nAbstract \nThere is a surge in exploring the best qubit platform for building efficient quantum computers suitable for complex operations. A qubit is analogous to the binary bit seen in a conventional computer. We show the potential for a diamond-based hybrid quantum system combining electrical (superconducting) and optical (nitrogen-vacancy centers) techniques. Superconducting qubit technology typically involves the fabrication of various logic elements based on Josephson junctions using standard superconducting materials such as Al or Nb. Boron-doped superconducting diamonds are\, however\, attractive due to better resistance to external perturbations. Considering a recent discovery of triplet-spin-based superconductivity in nanocrystalline diamond films and that diamond presents well-established quantum states in the form of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV-centers)\, diamond demonstrates a potential platform for the realization of all diamond-based quantum circuitry. We advance the understanding of superconducting order parameters in boron-doped nanodiamond films and as a new type of qubit system through the design of the resonator and superconducting quantum interference devices. Quantum information can be exchanged between a superconducting diamond loop (with a phase-slip qubit junction) and an ensemble of spins (NV-centers) attached to a microwave line of the diamond nanowire\, which would allow us to initialize\, control through microwave circuitry\, and perform measurements via an optical interface. Moreover\, the diamond NV-centers offer ‘holonomic’ control of qubits for the acquisition of geometric phase\, which can be added to the hybrid qubit system. The holonomic control of qubits implemented in a ‘nine-level’ NV center is demonstrated by using IBM QP. This modeling shows a long coherence time of a system of multiple NV centersand also uses the multiple ‘dark’ states present in the NV centers. Such a hybrid quantum system will be useful for studying complex quantum many-body problems and quantum artificial intelligence or vision. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Somnath Bhattacharyya\, a Professor in Physics at Wits University\, Johannesburg\, since 2012\, founded the Nano-Scale Transport Physics Laboratory\, which pioneered quantum-nanotechnology in South Africa. His expertise includes superconducting carbon-based quantum technology\, qubit-circuit designing & testing\, quantum simulations\, and theoretical models. He demonstrated diamond-based quantum tunnel devices\, spin-triplet superconductivity\, diamond qubits\, and NV-center-based quantum technology. He published two books [“Evolution: Classical Philosophy meets Quantum Science” and “Carbon Superstructures: From Quantum Transport to Quantum Computation”]\, five book chapters\, and over 100 journal papers. He supervised 8 PhD\, 8MSc students\, 8postdocs\, established many international collaborations\, and founded a start-up company\, Quantumquest Technologies Pty. Ltd.

SUMMARY:University Distinguished Lecture #22
DESCRIPTION:The 22nd University Distinguished Lecture will host renowned academician\, Padma Bhushan Prof. P Balaram\, National Centre for Biological Sciences\, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\, Bengaluru on October 10\, 2025.\nProf. Balram will deliver an insightful session on the “Evolutionary Inventions and Innovations That Drove the Rise of Chemistry\, the Birth of Biology and Determine Human History”.\nAbstract\n“The word evolution is most closely associated with Darwin and Biology. Yet it is the word that changed physics in my lifetime.” These are the words used by the physicist Jacob Bronowski in his now classic narration of “The Ascent of Man”\, in the 1970s on BBC television. Bronowski is at that point trying to explain the formation of the chemical elements in the stars\, by nuclear fusion processes\, and concludes “matter itself evolves”. Indeed\, all the natural elements\, present on Earth and accessible by mining\, were the Earth’s inheritance when it was born. Geological and chemical evolution must necessarily precede evolution of life on Earth. For almost the first 1.5 billion years of its almost 4.6 billion years of existence\, the Earth was devoid of life forms. This was the Hadean age\, a period when a molten surface began to settle\, a time of asteroid impacts\, an unimaginably hostile period for any life form. Yet it was the time that geology and chemistry conspired to create the conditions for the birth of biology.

SUMMARY:Algorithms as the game-changer in the digital era
DESCRIPTION:Industrie 4.0 has become increasingly global and cross-industry\, driving digital transformation across industries\, businesses\, and governments. SRM University-AP observes National Engineers’ day with an inspiring talk by Mr Dasari Ramakrishna\, Managing Director\, Efftronics Systems Pvt. Ltd.\, on September 15\, 2021\, at 06.45 pm. \nThe heartbeat of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is algorithms. While algorithms are not new\, the transition of businesses to be algorithmic is game-changing. Mathematicians describe an algorithm as an encapsulated set of rules that act on data to determine an outcome. In today’s digitalized world\, companies use algorithms on a daily basis to influence and support decisions (fact-based decision making). In system development\, algorithms building is the most challenging and major activity. Often engineers are expected to build completely new algorithms which are not available in the market (internet). One should adopt commonly available algorithms when required. But what is more important is to use various algorithmic concepts/principles together in combination to build a new algorithm. Like any development\, algorithms building also follows the cycle of defining\, analysing\, designing\, implementing\, and testing iteratively in a systematic way. If one had to build algorithmic thinking\, they need to practice with different scenarios\, reflect upon the results and experiment continuously. \nEvery year on September 15\, India commemorates Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s accomplishments by observing National Engineers Day. Visvesvaraya\, the Bharat Ratna awardee\, was born in the Karnataka village of Muddenahalli on September 15\, 1861. As a pioneer in engineering\, he made numerous contributions to the infrastructural backbone of the country. \nAbout the Speaker:\nMr Dasari Ramakrishna is the founding CEO of Efftronics Systems Pvt. Ltd.\, established in 1985. Backed by rich R&D\, Efftronics is now a leading provider of smart solutions for railway signalling\, smart cities\, smart buildings and industries. He is the architect of one of India’s largest IoT networks built for Indian railways with more than 6 million things connected across 9000 locations. He is a continuous learner & thought leader. Under his leadership\, Efftronics has innovated more than 50 solutions for different domains. By continually growing Efftronics\, Mr Ramakrishna has proved to the Indian industry that “With right aspirations and sincere effort to deliver value to customers\, it is possible to be successful and location doesn’t matter.” He is the former chairman of CII- A.P State Council. He serves as a member of the board of studies\, academic councils and governing body for several educational institutions and advisor for various universities. \nJoin this rekindling session on September 15\, 2021\, at 06.45 pm to understand the complexities of algorithm building.

SUMMARY:Chairman-AICTE elucidated the changing scenarios of the education sector in the Post COVID era
DESCRIPTION:The Tenth edition of the University Distinguished Lecture (UDL) Series\, organised by SRM University-AP\, expounded on a pertinent problem of the current time\, “Higher Education in India in the Post-COVID-19”. Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe\, Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)\, delivered the Distinguished Lecture\, and Shri Satish Chandra\, IAS\, Special Chief Secretary\, Higher Education\, Government of Andhra Pradesh\, gave a special address. \n\n\nIn his welcome address\, Prof D Narayana Rao\, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SRM University-AP\, set the context of the event\, emphasising on how the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has resulted in the temporary closure of about 1000 Universities and about 40\,000 Colleges in the country\, severely disrupting the teaching and learning process and research activities. The transition to “Learn From Anywhere (LFA) happened overnight and people had to get used to it. National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognises the importance of leveraging the advantages of technology while acknowledging its potential risks and dangers. Online education calls for carefully designing and appropriately scaled studies to determine how the benefits of online/digital education can be reaped while addressing or mitigating the downsides. There is a need to establish a “Digital and online Wing” in the Departments of Education in different states of the country. \n\n\n\nProf Anil Sahasrabudhe in his Distinguished Lecture\, delineated that the use of technology in the education environment has been initiated in the Pre-COVID days. Platforms such as Swayam\, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) came into existence to digitally bring quality education to everyone. Digital education carries a boon that no one can ignore\, i.e. making physical distance irrelevant in education. Digital education has the ability to reach students anywhere and everywhere provided they are equipped with gadgets and internet connectivity. Thus\, the Government of India has undertaken a nationwide project under\, Bharat Net\, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan to connect every corner of India through the internet. Prof Sahasrabudhe accepted that all subjects cannot be taught online\, especially lab-based practical courses that will have the need to attend physical classes. Music\, Drama\, sports\, other performing and fine arts\, which are an essential part of a pedagogical system\, cannot be studied online. Moreover\, a digital class can never replace the bonding humans tend to develop while working in close proximity. However\, it cannot be debated that the education system as we know it has changed. The future of education comes with a blended environment. Fortunately\, National Education Policy-2020 envisioned the change long ago and introduced a relevant policy to ensure the educational growth of the country. Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU)\, Academic Bank of Credits\, National Academic Depository are some of the revolutionary changes that are going to benefit the next generations in the post COVID days. The government has already established National Research Foundations to support mega research projects\, which may need several crores of rupees. Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe emphasised that studying in one’s native language is an essential requirement that NEP looks into. Prof Sahasrabudhe asserted that proper administration\, governance and autonomy are some of the deciding factors for the education sector in the coming days. While concluding his speech\, he further elucidated AICTE’s initiatives towards the advancement of the education sector-Curriculum Revisions\, Project-Based Experiential Learning\, Faculty Training\, Industry Internships\, Students Internship Programmes are soon to be inseparable aspects of the changing education sector. \nShri Satish Chandra highlighted the challenges associated with online education in respect to the state of Andhra Pradesh. 3000 colleges and 17 universities with 12 lakhs students in Higher Education Sector have got affected because of the pandemic. However\, the future of education brings a blended environment with both online and offline teaching-learning options. He opined that LMS\, Online Platforms\, gadgets such as desktops\, laptops or tablets are going to be a part of the new normal of the education sector. The Government of Andhra Pradesh strives to help economically backward students by providing the gadgets at an affordable cost under various scholarship schemes.
