SUMMARY:"Commit to Quit":SRM University-AP celebrates World No Tobacco Day
DESCRIPTION:World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and global partners to raise awareness on the dangers associated with tobacco usage. Following the theme of this year-“Commit to Quit”\, SRM University-AP has organised a seminar to spread awareness and urge university students\, teachers\, and other employees to take a digital pledge to be restrained from using tobacco. The welcome Adress will be given by Dr Lakshmi Rajyam\, Medical Officer\, SRM University-AP. Dr Lakshmi Kiran Talluri\, Medical Officer\, will explain the downsides of tobacco usage as the keynote speaker. He will further guide the viewers with the challenges and strategies associated with quitting tobacco. \nThe programme emphasises the health hazards associated with tobacco use and encourages individuals to adhere to government rules aimed at reducing smoking and other tobacco product use. According to WHO reports\, around 8 million people die each year because of tobacco use. In 1987\, the WHO declared May 31 as World No Tobacco Day to encourage people to abstain from tobacco use for at least 24 hours. The World Health Organization even prohibited advertisements promoting any tobacco product in 2008. Cigarette users\, according to research\, are more susceptible to Covid-19 infection due to the compromised lungs and respiratory organs caused by heavy cigarette usage. \nSRM University-AP commits to encouraging its associates to raise awareness and spread information about the hazards and realities of tobacco usage on World No Tobacco Day under the slogan “Commit to quit.” Dr Lakshmi Kiran Talluri holds the prestigious position of resident medical officer at SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh. He is an experienced medical expert and would provide significant insights to session attendees. Dr Talluri would speak from an expert perspective on the numerous aspects associated with smoking and tobacco intake to educate individuals about previously unknown facts. DESCRIPTION:Amidst the catastrophic situation of Covid-19\, more than half of the population suffers from mental health-related issues. As per the reports of the Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health\, about 60 per cent of the urban dwellers are victimised to depression\, anxiety\, stress\, and loneliness. \nIt is highly needed to combat the battle of mental disorder with firm steps. SRM University\, AP\, Andhra Pradesh has come forward to join hands in the mission by initiating a weekly discussion session\, “Ask your Counsellor\,” starting on May 12\, 2021\, at 6 pm\, to stream live every Wednesday. The Department of Student Affair organises it\, presenting Ms Aayushi Sharma\, the Student Counsellor who would respond to all queries related to mental health and its illness. \nCovid-19 Pandemic created a huge impact on the mental well-being of individuals. The aim of organising such discussions is to encourage individuals suffering from mental health-related issues to come out and consult with an expert/ counsellor. Regular consultations with trusted and experienced medical experts are necessary when health is a concerning factor amid the COVID-19 Pandemic. SRM University-AP steps forward to offer an avenue for its students\, staff and faculty members to discuss their health-related issues. It is a free online medical consultation programme that will take place every Saturday\, May 08\, from 6 pm onwards. Distinguished medical officers of the institute Dr Lakshmi Rajyam and Dr Lakshmi Kiran Talluri\, would address the session. \nIn this scenario where individuals are more prone to get infected by a fatal disease\, people must clarify all health-related questions on symptoms\, causes and treatment. The scepticism is caused by the numerous unverified opinions and comments that are being populated in the mass media. Under the confusion\, people are missing out on the boon of Medical Science and are causing more risk to themselves. \nIn this scenario\, only a medical expert can answer the questions that are being raised against the vaccination\, and for that matter\, Dr Ch Lakshmi Rajyam is the most knowledgeable resource that SRM University-AP has. DESCRIPTION:“I’ve failed over and over and over again that why I succeeded”-Michael Jordan. \nAspiring young cricketer and second-year BBA student of SRM University-AP\, Sai Akhil made to ‘The Newsmakers’ for getting selected into the prestigious Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-19 Team\, 2021. Born and raised in Hyderabad\, Akhil started playing cricket from the age of 12 in a neighbouring cricket coaching centre called Crick Summer. Department of Student Affairs has scheduled the event for April 26\, 2021\, at 5 pm. \nWith constant support from family and well-wishers\, Akhil Stepped into his journey of cricket. For three consecutive years\, he played for Ramadevi Public School’s National Cricket Tournament. Akhil also played in the Under-16 district tournament for Andhra Pradesh. Sai Akhil informed\, “Since my childhood\, I have always loved watching and playing cricket. I wanted to pursue my interest in cricket\, and thankfully both my family and my university encouraged me towards it”. Accolades and awards did not stop him from concentrating on his goals while focusing on his studies. In his endeavours\, Akhil was awarded the “Man of the Match” at Vitopia\, the sports and cultural fest organized by the Vellore Institute of Technology-AP. DESCRIPTION:G Ram Dheeraj\, 2nd year\, Civil Engineering\, SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh voyaged to the summit of “Shetidhar Peak(5358mts)” and “Friendship Peak (5287mts)” prior to his recent successful trek to the “Deo Tibba Peak (6001mts)\, Manali\, Himachal Pradesh”. DeoTibba is the second highest peak of the PirPanjal Mountains. Basking in the meadows\, and glaciers\, Dheeraj reached the mountain peak – an exceptional snow dome with a magnificent view. \nA trek enthusiast\, Dheeraj fancied adventure\, mountaineering\, seeing places\, and embracing the serenity of nature. Bending barriers\, he climbed the peak only to marvel at the picturesque view. He rejoiced being at a place traversed by a few. Though varying intensity of stress is perhaps experienced among learners before and during exams\, it impairs learning and adversely affects performance in examinations. \nAnxiety disorders are prevalent and impact about 18 percent of adults. An estimated 25 percent of 13-18-year-olds experience anxiety. DESCRIPTION:Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is nationwide revered as a legendary figure of the Indian National Movement. A study of his biography unfolds his unflagging zeal\, as a leader and motivator. His social\, economic\, and political concepts were formulated with the sole objective of India’s emancipation from the British rule of exploitation and oppression. He also thought about the reconstruction of Free India. \nAccording to Subhas Chandra Bose\, education was essential for character building and overall development of human life. Education unveils the internal discipline of mind and thoughts\, which in its turn produces external discipline of control of action or deeds. \nHe understood the need for female education and female emancipation- liberating from all shackles and artificial disabilities – social\, economic and political. Netaji Subhas Chandra was completely against of any discrimination on the grounds of caste\, race\, sex\, creed or wealth in Free India. \nHis addresses at the Indian National Congress bears Subhas Chandra’s ideas on a comprehensive reconstruction of Free India. Bose wanted the states to adopt an elaborate scheme for gradually socialising the entire agricultural and industrial system in the spheres of both production and distribution. He also advocated the abolition of landlordism and liquidation of agricultural indebtedness. According to Netaji\, liberty broadly signified political\, economic and social freedom. For him\, economic freedom was the essence of social and political freedom. \nHowever\, if we look at today’s India and the happenings\, can we claim for sure that we have imbibed the great leader’s vision in its true essence? We are free constitutionally\, but are we really free at all? Is this the freedom our great freedom fighters like Bose envisioned for us? \nDepartment of Student Affairs is organising a webinar on the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to honour and recall his beliefs on freedom and Nation. On November 21\, 2020\, at 5 PM\, Sourav Sanyal\, Miran Junaidi\, and Saurabh Ghanekar\, 4th year\, Department of Computer Science and Engineering will be narrating their tale of forming a start-up named oureye.ai. The young entrepreneurs developed an automated\, end-to-end video intelligence solution for enterprises to monitor surveillance camera recordings\, leveraging pre-existing CCTV-IP infrastructure. \nThe three brilliant students grabbed the opportunities provided by SRM AP and became an active member of the student-run technological club of SRM AP\, Next Tech Lab. Further\, they spent a semester at the University of California\, Berkeley as part of the Semester Abroad Programme to broaden their horizon of knowledge. Encouraged by the mentors and faculty\, the students participated in several international conferences and hackathons which kindled their interest in developing a platform that would provide practical solutions to real-life problems. \nDuring the session\, the students will share insights regarding their start-up. Also\, they will narrate the inspiring journey that commenced with their erudite experience at SRM AP\, which eventually enabled them to become young entrepreneurs. Their company generated a revenue of Rs. 1.7 million in the recent financial year.

DESCRIPTION:The well-designed Freshmen Orientation Programme-2021 not only gives an overview of the university systems and process but also provides a gateway to holistic development for the students. Progressing with the orientation programmes\, the second session on the mindfulness of the students has been planned in collaboration with Heartfulness Institute for August 27\, 2021\, at 2.30 pm. Ms Ragini Mathur\, one of the dedicated trainers of Heartfulness Institute\, will enlighten the students on “Refresh (Organizing the Mind)”. \nMs Ragini Mathur started her career as a Government teacher. She later got selected in Central Railways in RE Project. She secured promotion and became Divisional Railway Manager for the Bhopal Region. After taking voluntary retirement from Railway Services\, she worked as an Administrative Office Superintendent. She joined Heartfulness Institute more the two and half decades ago and became a trainer in 2011. The versatile Ms Mathur has also worked as a radio jockey and a casual announcer for Yuvvani Programme in Akashvani. At present\, she is working as a Campus Connect Coordinator for the Heartfulness Institute. \nJoin the session on August 27\, 2021\, at 2.30 pm to learn the tricks to calm and organise your mind from the expert herself.

SUMMARY:Dr Seran delivers a discourse on Speak Your Heart
DESCRIPTION:The Directorate of Student Affairs at SRM University-AP organised a session titled Speak Your Heart (The Happiness Trip) on June 29\, 2020. The talk explored the understanding of Happiness and decoded the multiple ways of achieving and retaining it. Dr Nappinnai Seran\, Professor\, Department of Psychiatry at Meenakshi Medical College delivered the talk. Dr Seran is also a renowned psychologist and Marital  Therapist. \nThe session tackled the idea that people need to strive for a happier and more fulfilling life. It busted the misconception that momentary happiness is insignificant. Dr Seran\, a leading expert on the subject\, shared invaluable insights on how to achieve true happiness and maintain it. Attendees were given a unique opportunity to learn about the complexities of the Happiness Trap and how to avoid it.  \nDr  Nappinnai Seran’s expertise allowed the students an opportunity to imbibe and navigate the challenges related to happiness and well-being. The interactive nature of the session encourages active participation and the exchange of ideas. Dr Nappinnai Seran’s ability to seamlessly blend professional expertise with relatable anecdotes resonated strongly with the audience. The interactive nature of the session\, especially the Q&A segment\, facilitated a direct connection between Dr Seran and the students\, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.

SUMMARY:International Yoga Day 2020 Goes Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The International Yoga Day on June 21\, 2020\, was held online and attended by more than 100 students and faculty members. The event aimed to spread the message of Vasudeva Kutubakam\, which means “One Earth\, One Family\, One Future.” Despite the physical distance\, the event highlighted the unity and interdependence of humanity and the planet. \nThe observance of Yoga Day provided a much-needed respite from the harsh reality of death and disease during the pandemic. By merging technology and ancient wisdom\, the participants were able to achieve a balance between physical and mental well-being.
