DESCRIPTION:Prof A K Sood on “Doing Science Without Borders”: Collaboration and curiosity among researchers will lead to impactful multidisciplinary solutions of the 21st century \nThe first University Distinguished Lecture on “Doing Science Without Borders” commenced with an inaugural welcome speech by Prof V S Rao\, Vice-Chancellor\, and Prof D Narayana Rao\, Pro-Vice-Chancellor\, SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh. Prof V S Rao expressed their gratitude to Prof Ajay K Sood for his gracious presence. Prof Narayana Rao emphasized that under the University Distinguished Lecture series\, the talks will be delivered by eminent scientists from India and abroad that would be of immense benefit for students and the faculty and researchers. He further mentioned\, “Doctors\, researchers\, engineers and scientists from several fields of knowledge around the world worked together to confront corona outbreak with an unprecedented spirit of collaboration. Also\, NEP advocates and emphasizes that the societal need of the 21st century require broad-based multidisciplinary research and education”. \nProf Ajay K Sood\, Fellow of the Royal Society\, FRS and Honorary Professor\, Indian Institute of Science (IISc)\, Bengaluru\, narrated three stories of his recent experiments and advanced research work\, namely “Emergent flocking behaviour seen in nature: Laboratory experiments”\, “Crystallization of Glass: Machine Learning in condensed matter Physics”\, and “Bacterial Nano Heat Engine: Getting bacteria to work”. He begins by stating that back in 1944\, a profound physicist Schrodinger introduced the concept of “aperiodic crystal” which led to the understanding of genetic molecules\, enunciating the importance of inter-disciplinary applications of scientific works. In his first narrative\, he speaks of the flocking movement among birds\, bacteria\, locusts\, and human beings as well. He brought the same experiment in his laboratory where he used 2 particles\, energized them\, and identified their flocking pattern. He observed that the velocity of movement between the two particles differ\, which can be applied to particle sorting. This experiment has applications in biology\, where bacteria and/or cells can be sorted and separated and also in autonomous cars. \nWhile explaining his second experiment\, Prof A K Sood mentioned that he studied the devitrification or the tendency of glass particles to crystallize over time to reach a state of stability from its metastable state. He used supervised Machine Learning to predict where crystallization will occur in glass. His team trained the system to identify the hard and soft particles of the glass. His experiments concluded that Machine Learning (ML) helps in identifying the soft particles\, which possess the tendency to move and crystallize over a long period of time. Further\, Prof A K Sood and his team of collaborators developed bacterial nano heat engines by mimicking the biological motors in our body which produces energy for living beings to function. Using bacterial activity\, they made heat engines and are advancing their research work to recognize the practical applications of the nano heat engines in cars\, batteries. The bacteria heat engines is a highly promising technology of the future. \nProf A K Sood narrated his laboratory stories to explicate the splendor of multidisciplinary research which can be used to solve basic problems. He said\, “The key to successful scientific research is to collaborate with experts beyond their own domain. Communication and appreciation of views of an open mind enable the scientists to understand the various phenomena. Students and researchers should be curious which will lead to research having various interdisciplinary applications that will make an impact across various domains.” \nAbout thousand participants from IISc\,IITs\, NITs\,IIITs\, IISERs\, several Indian Universities including University of Hyderabad\, Delhi University\, NEHU\, Pondicherry University\, Punjab University; a few foreign Universities including KAUST\, Saudi Arabia\, Nagoya University\, Japan\, Zhejiang Ocean University\, China\, Teesside University\, UK\, several Engineering Colleges; National Laboratories of DST\, DBT\, CSIR\, ISRO\, DRDO\, ICMR\, BARC\, JNCASR\, ARIES\, ARCI; industries including ARBL\, Tata Steel have attended the distinguished lecture given by Prof Ajay Sood.

In the recent times\, humanity is facing several challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic\, climate change\, and energy and food crises. Scientific and evidence-based inputs from various disciplines of natural science\, engineering\, as well as humanities is essential for the world to thrive. \nThis inter-disciplinary approach with active collaboration amongst experts across different spheres will assist in synthesizing a complete understanding of the issues. DESCRIPTION:SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh’s student-run Ennovab\, an Entrepreneurship hub\, is organizing an event on October 2: “Hacktoberfest 2020. ” During the event\, the participants will be introduced to open source\, GitHub\, open-source collaboration\, and open-source projects. An array of workshops and talks by prominent personalities from various industries is also arranged. \nThe Hacktoberfest 2020 is a month-long celebration of open source software run by Digital Ocean. It encourages participation in the open-source community\, which grows bigger every year. Hacktoberfest 2019 has completed 61\,871 challenges and had 483\,127 pull requests opened. They also had 154\,767 participating repositories from companies such as Intel\, Circle CI\, Vonage\, Indeed\, Progate\, Freshworks\, Cloudflare\, Gitcoin\, etc. \nStudents of SRM AP come from different backgrounds with a variety of skills. Hacktoberfest is a great resource for them to increase their participation in open source projects from technology and engineering companies\, which advises young and talented students to contribute to the open-source repositories.

SUMMARY:Towards building a smartphone-based  system for improving the efficiency of farms in India
DESCRIPTION:Despite the variety of traditional and IT-based agricultural information delivery approaches\, the majority of Indian farmers are not acquiring or provided with actionable agricultural information in a timely and regular manner. A lecture titled “Crop Darpan: Towards building a smartphone-based system for improving the efficiency of every farm in India” will be organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering on September 08\, 2021\, at 11.00 am to address the issue of the lab to the land gap in agriculture. Prof P Krishna Reddy\, from IIIT Hyderabad\, will talk about the eSagu system\, an IT-based farm-specific agro-advisory system field-tested on about 50 field and horticultural crops in hundreds of villages. \nSince 2004\, research efforts are being made at IIIT Hyderabad to investigate the building of IT-based agro-advisory systems to deliver actionable agro-advice to every farm field of India in a timely manner. In this connection\, they have built the eSagu system and village-level eSagu system. They are also currently investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system. The Crop Darpan App is available for cotton and rice crops at Google Play Store and Apple App Store. In this talk\, Prof P Krishna Reddy will share the experiences of building these systems and the future plans. \nBiography of the speaker:\nProf P Krishna Reddy is the head of the Agricultural Research Center and a member of the Data Sciences and Analytics Center research team at IIIT Hyderabad\, India. From 2013 to 2015\, he has served as a Program Director\, ITRA-Agriculture & Food\, Information Technology Research Academy (ITRA)\, Government of India. His research areas include data mining\, database systems and IT for agriculture. He has published about 189 refereed research papers which include 30 journal papers\, four book chapters\, and eight edited books. He is a steering committee member of the Pacific-Asia knowledge discovery and data mining (PAKDD) conference series and the Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA) conference series. He has delivered several invited/panel talks at reputed conferences and workshops in India and abroad. Since 2004\, he has been investigating the building efficient knowledge agricultural knowledge transfer systems by extending developments in IT. He has conceptualized the notion of Virtual Crop Labs to improve applied skills for extension professionals. Currently\, he is investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system\, which is a crop diagnostic tool for farmers\, with funding support from the India-Japan Joint Research Laboratory Program. The eSagu system\, an IT-based farm-specific agro-advisory system\, has got several recognitions including CSI-Nihilent e-Governance Project Award in 2006\, Manthan Award in 2008 and has been a finalist in the Stockholm Challenge Award in 2008 and received PAKDD Distinguished Service Award in 2021. \nJoin this illuminating lecture on September 08\, 2021\, at 11:00 am and gain valuable insights into building a smartphone-based system for improving the efficiency of every farm in India.

Mr. Managoli is the Principal Consultant at Pi Square Technologies India\, a Michigan based futuristic Automotive Embedded Engineering and Consulting company having association with top-notch suppliers in Automotive Industry. \nMr. Managoli possess 35 years of industry experience in various companies operating in the public and private sector. Being associated with the Indian Space Research Organization’s Satellite Centre (ISAC) as a Scientist\, he worked on 2nd generation INSAT series of spacecraft. He then moved to be the founding member of the India Centre for PLC system-and-software development group at Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). Mr. Managoli is also proficient in Software Engineering Process frameworks and Standards such as CMMi\, AutoSPICE\, Functional Safety standards of ISO26262\, IEC61508 & UL1998.
