SUMMARY:SRM AP’s Ennovab organizes an event in Hacktoberfest 2020
DESCRIPTION:SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh’s student-run Ennovab\, an Entrepreneurship hub\, is organizing an event on October 2: “Hacktoberfest 2020. ” During the event\, the participants will be introduced to open source\, GitHub\, open-source collaboration\, and open-source projects. An array of workshops and talks by prominent personalities from various industries is also arranged. \nThe Hacktoberfest 2020 is a month-long celebration of open source software run by Digital Ocean. It encourages participation in the open-source community\, which grows bigger every year. Hacktoberfest 2019 has completed 61\,871 challenges and had 483\,127 pull requests opened. They also had 154\,767 participating repositories from companies such as Intel\, Circle CI\, Vonage\, Indeed\, Progate\, Freshworks\, Cloudflare\, Gitcoin\, etc. \nStudents of SRM AP come from different backgrounds with a variety of skills. Hacktoberfest is a great resource for them to increase their participation in open source projects from technology and engineering companies\, which advises young and talented students to contribute to the open-source repositories.

Previously\, he has served as an advisory of Government of Telangana as the Chief Innovation Officer of the State Innovation Cell. This year on September 26\, IIT Bombay will conduct Online Workshops on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in association with SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh. The initiative is primarily designed for young students to combat mental health issues\, especially the ones concerning the pandemic situation. \nProfessional counselor will exclusively cater to participants through individual workshops and enlighten them to recognize mental health issues. It is now time to meet another great personality\, Mr Vasagiri Venkata Lakshminarayana\, Former Additional Director General of Police in Mumbai\, Maharashtra. Mr Lakshminarayana\, the son of the soil\, dedicated his life to the service of the nation. He is well-known for leading some high profile investigations with repute and valour. The Retired-IPS officer had previously held the posts of Joint Commissioner of Police of Thane\, Maharashtra and Inspector general of police Rank under Y-category security for dealing with high-profile corruption cases. He has also worked under Anti-Terrorism Squad and CBI. Mr V.V. Lakshmi Narayana has been conferred with the Presidents Police Medal for Distinguished Services on 26 January 2017. \nHe is known for his impactful speeches and interactions with youth that impels them towards maturity and development. He was an active member of Lead India Foundation which was started with the blessings of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Mr V.V. Lakshmi Narayana is also an avid blood donor. He was the President of Indian National Science Academy (INSA)\, President of Institution of Chemical Engineers (ICE) and also served as President of Global Research Alliance. He is a director on board of India’s several leading companies\, from Tata to Reliance. \nHe is the Fellow of Royal Society (FRS)\, the highest honour reserved for world’s pathbreaking scientists. SUMMARY:Towards building a smartphone-based  system for improving the efficiency of farms in India
DESCRIPTION:Despite the variety of traditional and IT-based agricultural information delivery approaches\, the majority of Indian farmers are not acquiring or provided with actionable agricultural information in a timely and regular manner. A lecture titled “Crop Darpan: Towards building a smartphone-based system for improving the efficiency of every farm in India” will be organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering on September 08\, 2021\, at 11.00 am to address the issue of the lab to the land gap in agriculture. Prof P Krishna Reddy\, from IIIT Hyderabad\, will talk about the eSagu system\, an IT-based farm-specific agro-advisory system field-tested on about 50 field and horticultural crops in hundreds of villages. \nSince 2004\, research efforts are being made at IIIT Hyderabad to investigate the building of IT-based agro-advisory systems to deliver actionable agro-advice to every farm field of India in a timely manner. In this connection\, they have built the eSagu system and village-level eSagu system. They are also currently investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system. The Crop Darpan App is available for cotton and rice crops at Google Play Store and Apple App Store. In this talk\, Prof P Krishna Reddy will share the experiences of building these systems and the future plans. \nBiography of the speaker:\nProf P Krishna Reddy is the head of the Agricultural Research Center and a member of the Data Sciences and Analytics Center research team at IIIT Hyderabad\, India. From 2013 to 2015\, he has served as a Program Director\, ITRA-Agriculture & Food\, Information Technology Research Academy (ITRA)\, Government of India. His research areas include data mining\, database systems and IT for agriculture. He has published about 189 refereed research papers which include 30 journal papers\, four book chapters\, and eight edited books. He is a steering committee member of the Pacific-Asia knowledge discovery and data mining (PAKDD) conference series and the Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA) conference series. He has delivered several invited/panel talks at reputed conferences and workshops in India and abroad. Since 2004\, he has been investigating the building efficient knowledge agricultural knowledge transfer systems by extending developments in IT. He has conceptualized the notion of Virtual Crop Labs to improve applied skills for extension professionals. Currently\, he is investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system\, which is a crop diagnostic tool for farmers\, with funding support from the India-Japan Joint Research Laboratory Program. In this phase\, students are on a journey to discover themselves personally and professionally as well. To understand and discover the potentialities\, there is first a need to understand self – How the mind works and processes information? How to deal with life’s challenges? How to bounce back in times of adversities? How to make use of opportunities… how to empower and enable oneself to move towards a flourishing life? How to deal with failures? How to celebrate success? \nImportance of Well-Being in Educational Institutions \nHistorically educational institutions have aimed for academic excellence as sole evidence for their success. Now\, there are growing numbers of educational institutions who are now acknowledging the need to develop students in a more holistic way\, with a stronger focus on well-being. Much of this is in recognition of the increasing statistics on psychological distress and mental illness in young adults\, and the realization of the need to take a more proactive rather than reactive approach to mental health. \n‘Well-Being Program’ based on positive psychology and positive education for educational institutions will act as an antidote to the complex emotions college students are exposed to especially in the present circumstances. \nWell-Being: Well-being is an individual’s experience of satisfaction with the ‘past’\, contentment with the ‘present ‘and hope for the ‘future ‘. The scientific construct of subjective well-being can be defined as both a cognitive and affective self-evaluation of one’s life and experiences. \nWell-Being through the Scientific Study of Positive Psychology \nPositive Psychology is a scientific approach to studying human thoughts\, feelings and behavior\, with a focus on strengths instead of weaknesses\, building the good in life instead of repairing the bad\, and taking the lives of average people up to “great” instead of focusing solely on moving those who are struggling up to “normal”. As a field\, positive psychology spends much of its time thinking about topics like character strengths\, optimism\, life satisfaction\, happiness\, well-being\, gratitude\, compassion (as well as self-compassion)\, self-esteem and self- confidence\, hope and elevation. These topics are studied in order to learn how to help people flourish and live their best lives. \nWell-Being and Happiness \nHappiness is “people’s evaluations of their lives and encompasses both cognitive judgments of satisfaction and affective appraisals of moods and emotions” (Kesebir & Diener\, 2008). It is the experience of joy\, contentment\, or positive well-being\, combined with a sense that one’s life is good\, meaningful and worthwhile. \nWell-being and Neuroplasticity \nThe ability of the brain to reorganize itself\, both physically and functionally\, throughout the life due to an individual’s environment\, behavior\, thinking\, and emotions is called Neuroplasticity. Dr Somesh Vinayak Tiwari was awarded the prestigious “Outstanding Doctoral Students Award”\, from Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) at an event held at the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Convention Centre\, Anushaktinagar\, Mumbai. DESCRIPTION:SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh is organizing a webinar titled “EFFECTIVE WAYS OF WRITING RESEARCH ARTICLE” on 25th July from 11.00 AM till 12.30 PM. Writing a research paper is a great opportunity for young students to explore ideas that are relevant and socially beneficial. Being effectively able to write a research paper enables scholars to demonstrate their expertise on the domain\, and the writing process helps in enhancing the critical analyzing skills of Ph.D students\, and the young faculty members. \nProf Shobhana Narasimhan from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR)\, Bengaluru will be delivering a talk as the resource person. She is a highly reputed theoretical Physicist and has a great passion for ‘writing of Research Articles’. Prof Shobhana did her MSc in physics from IIT Bombay\, and her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Since 1996 she has been the faculty of the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research\, Bengaluru\, where she is a Professor in the Theoretical Sciences Unit.
