SUMMARY:Dr Lorenzo Contessi on many-body systems
DESCRIPTION:International research exposure is a prerequisite to developing an analytical bent of mind and knowledge acquisition. Global exposure help acquaint scholars with the nuances in the recent research domains and methodology. The Department of Physics is organising a Department Research Seminar to promote research discourse with eminent scientists and scholars from all around the world. The seminar will be addressed by Dr Lorenzo Contessi\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, IJCLabs\, on December 14\, 2022. In this seminar titled “Many-body systems around universality”\, Dr Contessi will discuss various universal systems\, especially in the unitarity universality class. \nAbstract \nUniversal systems are quantum mechanical objects that can be described similarly despite having different typical sizes\, energies\, and degrees of freedom. This is possible because they share identical few-body properties. Unitarity is arguably the most common universality class for low-energy physics and can be found in hadronic\, nuclear\, and atomic fields. This interconnection between fields is important because it allows for the passage of knowledge from one field to another. This is of special benefit to the fields in which very little is experimentally known since emergent phenomena can be predicted from more widely known sectors of physics. What is the “best” theory to describe the emergent phenomena maintaining interdisciplinarity is not a simple question to be answered. However\, effective field theories result is the most natural framework for this search for their systematic improvability and the connection to the underlying physics of the various universal systems. \nJoin the webinar to learn how to build an effective quantum mechanical theory\, how to pass knowledge from one field to others\, and what phenomena emerge in many-body systems.

SUMMARY:An Odyssey of Physics: The eminent Guest lecture series
DESCRIPTION:James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the largest optical telescope in space that conducts Infrared Astronomy. The Department of Physics is coming up with an eminent Guest lecture series\, An Odyssey of Physics\, to bring the trending topics in the domain of physics for an impeccable dialogue. The first session of the series is on The Search for Habitable Worlds in the Era of JWST by Dr Liton Majumdar from the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) Bhubaneswar. \nAbstract of the talk \nOne of the most exciting developments in astronomy and astrophysics is the discovery of planets around stars other than the Sun\, termed ‘Exoplanets’. The discoveries of these exoplanets have revealed an astonishing diversity in their physical characteristics – masses\, temperatures\, radii\, orbital properties\, and host stars. Exoplanets known today range from super Jupiter to Earth-size rocky planets over a wide range of temperatures\, including several in the habitable zones of their host stars. In this talk\, the speaker will discuss how these planets form\, why they differ from those in our solar system\, and which ingredients are available to build them. Furthermore\, he will also discuss how we study the atmospheres of these exoplanets using a combination of ground and space-based observations and numerical models and thereby characterise them. In addition\, there will be discussions on the near future of this emerging frontier in the context of significant advances expected from facilities such as JWST\, ARIEL\, and large ground-based telescopes.

SUMMARY:Igniting the innovative spirit
DESCRIPTION:“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible”- Arthur C Clarke \nThe indomitable spirit to give birth to the impossible is the magical force that keeps changing the face of the world. Every innovation\, be it in the field of technology\, medicine\, or entrepreneurship\, has paved the way for colossal changes simplifying life on earth. The sheer ability to think and innovate is what made human beings the ruling power. All the amenities and services that we revel in today would not have come into existence without the power to innovate. \nAs the world is surging ahead with far-reaching developments at an unimaginable pace\, there is no question about equipping society to embrace these changes and equally be an unflinching source instigating such changes. Learning in the present era is beyond the ability to read\, write and pass with flying colours. True learning does not take place without igniting the spark of creativity hidden inside every individual. The Entrepreneurship Cell has scheduled the launch of their latest endeavour “Innovation Square” to put on show the unrelenting power of innovation of our students. \nDate: May 10\, 2022 \nTime: 05.30 pm \nVenue: Tiered Classroom

SUMMARY:Redefining the beauty standards
DESCRIPTION:Imagine being taught from a very young age that you must cater to the expectations of each and everyone around you but not yours. Think about the times you tried to fit yourself in someone else’s set of standards. Falling into the rabbit hole of hating our own appearance has become easy ever since the media started setting unrealistic beauty standards. Rise of social media fitness gurus and influencers\, who are obsessed with the unreasonable “flaws” in our bodies\, accelerated the process. This led to a myriad of issues ranging from eating disorders to anxiety and depression. \nClaiming the existence of an alternate explanation of beauty outside the stereotypes is thus the need of the hour. Cherishing yourself the way you are is not just an act of love but a socio-political statement. The ability to choose how to use your own body\, irrespective of an outsider’s opinion\, is an essential right of every individual. \nThe Department of Student Affairs is organising a session\, ‘Reclaiming bodily autonomy’ with Ms Sridevi Srinath to help you unlearn the standard narratives of beauty. Let you be the one who decides what to do and what not to do with your body. \nDate: April 23\, 2022 \nTime: 11.00 am to 12.00 pm IST

SUMMARY:Ultra-low power and agile IC design for novel sensor nodes for the Internet of Things
DESCRIPTION:The Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly increased our awareness of the world and broadened the scope of our engagement with it. In the first episode of the ECE Department Guest Lecture Series\, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising a lecture on April 23\, 2022\, from 10.20 am to 12.00 noon. Dr Orazio Aiello\, Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa\, Italy\, will engage the audience on the topic Ultra-Low-Power and Agile IC Design for novel Sensor Nodes for the Internet of Things on that day. \nThe vision of a world where pervasive integrated electronic systems embedded in everyday life objects (e.g. household appliances\, surveillance cameras\, healthcare systems) are fully interconnected to collect\, process\, and exchange useful information requires energy-autonomous systems for distributed sensing and data acquisition. The low-cost requirement demands a small area\, low design effort\, digital-like shrinkage across CMOS generations\, and design/technology portability. The possibility to exploit the digital (automated) design flow even for analog building blocks can dramatically reduce the design effort of any system-on-chip that faces the analog signal. Since data processing is digital\, but most signals from the real world are analog\, almost any electronic device that interfaces with the surrounding environment will benefit from the outcomes of this investigation. In this framework\, the talk illustrates the concepts and the design flows which enable the implementation of analog functions by true digital circuits. \nBiography of the speaker: \nOrazio Aiello (Senior Member\, IEEE) received the BSc and MSc degrees (cum laude) from the University of Catania\, Italy\, in 2005 and 2008\, respectively\, the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) from the Scuola Superiore di Catania\, Italy\, in 2009\, and the PhD degree from the Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, in 2013.\,From 2008 to 2009\, he was an Analog IC Designer and an EMC Consultant for STMicroelectronics\, Castelletto\, Italy. In 2012\, he was a Visiting PhD. A student with Monash University\, Melbourne\, Australia. In 2013\, he was a Research Fellow in a joint project with FIAT-Chrysler Automobiles\, Turin. In 2014\, he joined NXP-Semiconductors\, Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, as a Mixed Signal IC Designer and an EMC Expert. In 2015 and 2016\, he was a Visiting Fellow with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia. Since 2015\, he has been working with the Green IC Group\, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)\, National University of Singapore\, where he has also been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual and a Global Fellow leading the ULPIoT project. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Genova\, Italy. His main research interests include energy-efficient analogue-mixed signal circuits and sensor interfaces. Dr Aiello is a member of the IEEE CASS Microlearning AdHoc Committee and is/was a Technical Program Committee Member of a number of conferences\, such as NORCAS and APCCAS. \nJoin this informative lecture with Dr Orazio Aiello on April 23\, 2022 at 10.20 am IST.

SUMMARY:Non-equilibrium dynamics of interacting particle systems with annihilation
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is going to host the sixth instalment of the Eminent Guest Lecture Series: An Odyssey of Physics on March 19\, 2022\, at 03.00 PM IST with Prof Parongama Sen from the University of Calcutta as the keynote speaker. Dr Sen will be speaking on” Non-equilibrium dynamics of interacting particle systems with annihilation”. \nProf Parongama Sen has been teaching at the University of Calcutta as Professor since 2008. She received her PhD from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics\, Calcutta in 1993. She was also awarded APS-IUSSTF Professorship in 2012-13. Her research interests include statistical physics: phase transitions and critical phenomena in magnetic systems\, networks\, quantum systems\, percolation etc. and dynamical phenomena in complex physical and social systems. \nNon-equilibrium dynamics of interacting particle systems with annihilation \nThere has been tremendous research activity on the evolution of systems comprising of interacting particles in Statistical Physics over the last few decades. This lecture particularly considers those systems in which the particles (also called reactants) may get annihilated instantaneously upon contact or merged as a single species\, both of which reduce the particle number. Some of these processes have a one-to-one correspondence with the coarsening dynamics of spin systems and play an important role in the development of non-equilibrium Statistical Physics. \nUsually\, one considers diffusive motion when the particles move freely\, and some known results in this context will be discussed. Here\, the speaker notes that the dynamics may also be considered in terms of population densities rather than individuals and examples include models of epidemic spreading. \nFinally\, she will focus on a model in which the reactant particles are driven by a dynamic bias that radically changes the scaling behaviour of the relevant quantities. The results will be presented for such a system\, highlighting the microscopic dynamics\, which reveal a crossover behaviour.

SUMMARY:The Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and some of its ramifications
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP organises the first episode of the Distinguished Lecture Series on September 29\, 2021\, at 3:30 pm. Prof Vikraman Balaji\, renowned Mathematician from Chennai Mathematical Institute\, Chennai\, India will deliver a lecture on the topic “The Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and some of its ramifications“ \nAbstract of the talk: \nThe Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem is one of the spectacular theorems from India in the past 50 years or so. The theorem is more than a deep result but is in a way philosophy or correspondences and symmetries. The theorem has had an impact on several aspects of mathematics. The theorem has also led to developments along lines that are similar but by themselves are also deep and central. Since the talk is for a general audience\, I plan to give an overview of the theorem\, a few of its big impacts in topology and geometry and a few of its ramifications in terms of generalizations. \nAbout the Speaker:\nProf Vikraman Balaji is a renowned Indian Mathematician and currently a professor at the Chennai Mathematical Institute\, India. He completed his doctorate in mathematics under the supervision of Prof C S Seshadri. His primary research area is algebraic geometry. He has made outstanding contributions to moduli problems over algebraic varieties. In particular\, his work on ‘compactification of moduli of principal G-bundles over algebraic surfaces and his joint work with C.S Seshadri on ‘Parahoric torsors’ are very significant among his many other notable works. In 2006\, he received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Mathematical Sciences and was awarded the J.C Bose fellowship in 2009. He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy Of Sciences in 2007 and Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in 2015. He is presently an elected member of the National Academy Of Sciences\, India (NASI). \nJoin this lecture on September 29\, 2021\, at 3.30 pm to understand the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and its impact on Mathematics.

SUMMARY:On liquefaction and reliquefaction studies and their mitigation techniques
DESCRIPTION:The third session of the distinguished lecture series organised by the Department of Civil Engineering is scheduled to be held on September 18\, 2021\, Saturday\, from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Dr Ganesh Kumar S\, Scientist\, Geotechnical Eng. Division\, CSIR-CBRI\, Roorkee will deliver a talk on the topic “Liquefaction and reliquefaction studies and their mitigation techniques”. \nDuring an earthquake\, liquefaction is one of the processes that occur in the saturated loose sand layer. It occurs when the pore water pressure reaches a certain level\, which is near to the soil’s total stress. Structures built on top of or within the liquefied ground may fail to owe to ground settlement\, which is one of the possible effects. The lecture aims to elaborate on the experimental studies on the liquefaction and reliquefaction potential of saturated ground and the use of ground improvement techniques for its improvement. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr S Ganesh Kumar is currently working as a scientist in Geotechnical Engineering Division at CSIR-Central Building Research Institute\, Roorkee.
