DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biological Sciences is organising the India–UK AMR Network Meeting on January 21-23\, 2026\, along with University of Leeds\, representing a major step towards strengthening cross-country\, One Health–aligned AMR research. Funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences\, the India–UK AMR Network brings together leading researchers\, clinicians\, veterinarians\, and public health experts from India and the UK to build a collaborative network focused on understanding antimicrobial use and resistance in apparently healthy populations across India. \nSignificance of the Meeting \nAntimicrobial resistance is a critical global health challenge\, with community-level transmission increasingly recognised as a key driver. This meeting is significant in shifting the focus beyond clinical settings to healthy populations\, offering new insights into early AMR emergence and spread. With a strong focus on the valorization of natural fibers\, lignin\, and cellulose for bioproducts\, Dr Widya Fatriasari has made significant contributions to the field of biomass conversion. Having published over 220 research papers\, including works in national and internationally recognised Scopus and SCI indexed journals\, Dr Widya Fatriasari is an esteemed figure in academic research. She holds 45 registered patents\, with 2 patents granted and 1 license. Her expertise encompasses various facets of biomass\, including hydrolysis\, fungal applications\, and lignin and lignocellulosic conversion\, making them a valuable partner for innovative research initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a research seminar on the topic “Probing Higgs Boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)” at 03.00 PM\, January 07\, 2026. The seminar will be delivered by Dr Gouranga Kole\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, National Taiwan\, University and CERN\, Geneva\, Switzerland. \nAbstract \nRecent results on measurements related to the Higgs boson using proton–proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC will be presented. The seminar will begin with an overview of the object reconstruction techniques employed in the CMS experiment\, providing essential context for the subsequent analyses. The main focus will be on Higgs boson decays into a top quark and a light quark within the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet model. In particular\, the signal strengths and the corresponding upper limits on the production cross sections will be discussed\, offering insights into Higgs–fermion interactions and possible signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. The seminar will conclude with a summary of the current status of charged Higgs boson searches at CMS.

DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean Research and the Department of Mechanical Engineering is jointly organising the 8th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. Vittaldas V Prabhu \, Director of Penn State’s Service Systems Engineering program\, on January 07\, 2025. \nTitle: “Engineering the 21st Century Service Economy: A Research and Education Agenda for Service Systems Engineering” \nAbstract \nService Systems Engineering (SSE) provides a rigorous analytical foundation for improving the performance of complex service enterprises across retail\, healthcare\, logistics\, financial services\, and digital operations. Building on recent advances such as fusion-learning Bayesian networks for diagnostics\, distributed and data- driven control of logistics networks\, and cash-flow bullwhip modeling in capital-intensive supply chains\, this lecture outlines a research agenda that strengthens efficiency\, resilience\, and human-centered decision making in modern service operations. A complementary education agenda highlights how experiential projects\, interdisciplinary pathways\, AI-enabled decision tools\, and affordable cyber-physical platforms can prepare engineers to model\, optimize\, and innovate within the rapidly expanding service economy. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Vittaldas V Prabhu is Professor of Industrial Engineering and the Charles and Enid Schneider Faculty Chair in Service Enterprise Engineering at Penn State University. His research advances service systems engineering through contributions to Bayesian network diagnostics\, smart logistics\, distributed control\, decision support systems\, and cash-flow bullwhip analytics across manufacturing\, healthcare\, IT\, and financial operations. He is the Director of Penn State’s Service Systems Engineering program\, integrating service-focused curricula\, experiential industry partnerships\, AI-enabled projects\, and affordable cyber-physical learning platforms. Prof. Prabhu earned his graduate degrees and Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is an IISE Fellow.

Prof. Edathil Vijayan\, President\, Society for Biotechnologists India (SBTI) and Chairman\, National Academy of Sciences India (NASI) – Kerala Chapter\, will deliver an interactive session on “Disruptive Technologies Expected to Change the World.” \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Dr. Edathil Vijayan FNASc.\, currently President\, Society for Biotechnologists India (SBTI) holds a BSc (Hons.)\, MSc. and Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University. Immediately after his PhD\, he joined the Department of Zoology\, Center for Advanced Studies in Endocrinology\, Delhi University as a Faculty. He was awarded the Ford Foundation post-doctoral Fellowship with Dr S M McCann at the University of Texas\, Southwestern Medical School at Dallas\, USA from1974-78. On return\, he was selected as an Associate Professor\, School of Life Sciences in the newly established Hyderabad Central University and rose to the rank of full Professor shortly. He was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry Gottingen\, Germany (1981-83). He was invited as Professor and Head\, Dept of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Dean\, School of Life Sciences\, Pondicherry Central University in 1988 and continued in that position till 2006. \nHis research interests vary from Neuroendocrinology/Mammalian reproduction\, Neuropeptides and Neurotransmitters\, generously supported by DST grants. Prof. Vijayan has published over 105 papers in International Journals of repute including Nobel Foundation Symposium Volume and contributed Chapters in several Books. He has supervised 12 Ph.D.\, and 15 M.Phil Scholars and served as Chairman\, Board of Studies\, Member Academic Council and Executive Council of several Universties and Expert Committees of DST\, ICMR\, CSIR\, UGC and UPSC and NAAC. He is also Ph.D. examiner for over 40 Indian and foreign Universities. Life Member of several Professional Societies including Endocrine Society USA and Max-Planck Alumni Association Germany.

Prof. G Narhari Sastry\, Professor \, Department of Biotechnology\, IIT Hyderabad\, resource person for the Guest Lecture will deliver an insightful session on “Artificial Intelligence in Natural Sciences and Engineering”.  \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. G Narahari Sastry is a professor at the Department of Biotechnology\, IIT Hyderabad. His research interests are working in the interdisciplinary areas of chemistry\, biology\, material science\, software development and artificial intelligence. In the last decade\, the GNS group was involved in developing indigenous software that aims to strengthen computational drug discovery called the Molecular Property Diagnostic Suite (MPDS)\, thereby working towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat. Dr. Sastry has also made fundamental contributions in the field of non-covalent interaction\, Bucky bowl chemistry\, aromaticity\, and pericyclic reaction. He has made a great contribution in open-source software development in the field of Computer-Aided Drug Discovery\, databases\, and web servers; all the resources developed by his group are freely accessible to the scientific community. He has published more than 340 research articles in reputed journals with an active average impact factor. \nMost of his papers are well-cited\, with a total of 14\,900 citations\, an h-index of 57\, and an i10-index of 260\, according to Google Scholar. Dr. Sastry and his group have mainly contributed to and maintained various web-based platforms and databases\, such as a) MPDS (for several diseases)\, b) CAD\, c) A2ID\, d) PLID\, e) NEI-MPDB\, and f) OSADHI. He guided 31 Ph.D. and 30 Post-doctoral fellows\, besides over 200 people who are involved in short-term visits. He has given over 450 lectures in both national and international conferences\, invited talks and symposia. \nDr. Sastry was awarded with Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Chemical Sciences (2011) (one of the highest prizes for science and engineering in India)\, National Bioscience award\, DBT (2009)\, (one of the highest for Life sciences in India)\, Swarnajayanti Fellowship (2005) (DST)\, B.M. Birla award (2001)\, Dr. B.C. Deb Memorial award (2009)\, CRSI Bronze Medal (2011)\, CRSI Silver Medal (2024) and Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. He is also Sir J. C. Bose National Fellow. He was a visiting professor at IMS\, Japan; LMU\, Munich\, Germany; Jackson State University\, USA\, and Kyushu University\, Japan. He is a Fellow of INSA (FNA)\, National Academy of Sciences (FNASc)\, Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc)\, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)\, Fellow of Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy\, Telangana State Academy of Sciences (Founder Fellow)\, Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (FAPAS) and also Fellow of Biotech Research Society\, India (BRSI).

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Department Guest Lecture by Dr Soumyadeep Chakrabortty\, Max-Planck-Institute für Kohlenforschung (The Max Planck Institute for Coal Research)\, Mülheim an der Ruhr\, Germany on December 10\, 2025. Dr Chakrabortty will deliver the talk on “Powering Homogeneous (Asymmetric) Catalysis with Earth-Abundant Metals”. \nAbstract of the Talk \nTransition metal catalyzed hydro-functionalization of alkenes and alkynes remains a cornerstone of homogeneous catalysis offering excellent economy for the synthesis of functionalized molecules. While precious-metal catalysts based on Rh\, Ru\, and Ir have long dominated this field\, concerns regarding cost\, scarcity\, and residual-metal toxicity have intensified efforts toward more sustainable alternatives. This presentation will showcase sustainable base-metal catalysis for stereoselective synthesis. A cobalt catalyst enables enantioselective hydrogenation of cyclic enamides via distinct mechanistic pathways [1-3]\, while an iron complex [4]\, promotes highly selective trans-hydrostannation of terminal alkynes through a modified Chalk–Harrod mechanism. Together these studies highlight the potential of earth-abundant metals in homogeneous catalysis. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Soumyadeep Chakrabortty received M.S. in chemistry at IISER Mohali\, India in 2019 on NHC chemistry and catalysis. He obtained his PhD at Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) Rostock\, Germany and stayed as research associate at LIKAT. Currently\, he is pursuing his post-doctoral research at Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (MPI-Kofo) at Mülheim a/d Ruhr. He was also awarded the DAAD Scholarship to visit Van’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Science (HIMS)\, University of Amsterdam (UvA) during PhD studies. His research focuses on design and application of novel ligands in transition metal catalysis for organic synthesis.
