SUMMARY:Lecture on Sustainable Catalysis for Molecular Complexity
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Guest Lecture on “Sustainable Catalysis for Molecular Complexity: From Selective C–H Functionalization to Biomolecular Modification” on April 07\, 2026. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Suman Dana\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Basel\, Switzerland. The talk will be convened by Dr Sabyasachi Chakrabortty\, Associate Professor & HoD\, Department of Chemistry\, Faculty Advisor\, Energy\, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (CIDR). \nAbstract \nCatalysis remains central in organic synthesis\, enabling selective synthetic transformations under relatively milder conditions. Today’s global challenges demand not only efficient synthetic methodologies but also approaches that address resource-economy\, waste minimization\, energy efficiency\, and overall sustainability. Thus\, devising novel catalytic tools to enable precise synthesis of complex organic architectures\, without compromising the reactivity and selectivity\, is highly desirable. In this presentation\, I will reflect on my decade-long journey dedicated to the development of these cutting-edge synthetic tools. First\, the significance of transition-metal catalyzed C−H activations will be discussed as an alluring retrosynthetic tool for diversifying simple progenitors into value-added organic molecules. Specific highlight of this topic will be the development of Ru(II)-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative dimerization of aromatic carboxylic acids\, harnessing non-covalent interactions. Subsequently\, the importance of metallaelectro-catalyzed C−H activations and asymmetric organic electrosynthesis will be emphasized. Then the pioneering contributions in the realm of enantioselective 3d metallaelectro-catalyzed C−H activation reactions and chiral oxazoline ligand development will be deliberated. The discussion will then shift towards the strategic application of C–H activation strategies for the asymmetric synthesis of novel chiral molecules. Finally\, I will provide a glimpse of how catalysis can enable translational applications for the modification of DNA/RNA backbones\, thereby advancing the discovery of novel nucleic acid therapeutics. Throughout this journey\, key mechanistic features and the sustainability aspects will be elaborated.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture on Sustainable Energy Materials
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Guest Lecture titled “A journey towards the development of sustainable energy materials: Bioinspired to hierarchical coordination molecules” on April 10\, 2026. Prof. Bhaskar Biswas\, Laboratory for Structural Engineering\, Department of Chemistry\, University of North Bengal will deliver the lecture. \nAbstract \nBioinspired coordination compounds hold great promise for unveiling mechanistic insights into biological functions. Contextually\, the active site of metalloproteins and metalloenzymes may provide a foundation for the rational design of sustainable energy materials. However\, such bioinspired small coordination compounds impose a huge barrier for the pilot-scale production of green energy. This limitation triggers the aim to design hierarchical coordination compounds\, specially metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Nowadays\, MOFs have marked their footprints as the “Holy Grail” in the design and development of advanced energy materials. Evidently\, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 to Susumu Kitagawa\, Richard Robson\, and Omar M. Yaghi “for the development of metal–organic frameworks”\, fueling the rigorous application of pristine MOFs\, MOFs-based composites as well as electrochemically-triggered active species. 3 Additionally\, the upsurging of cost-effective de novo electrocatalysts through the operando electro-oxidation approaches holds great promise for the scalable production of green energy in the pursuit of energy sustainability. This talk summarizes the journey of small coordination compounds to hierarchical molecules and an operando electro-oxidation reconstitution strategy in producing a smart electrocatalyst cobalt “oxyhydroxide “derived from a newly designed 2D cobalt (II) metal-organic framework\, NBU-4\, directly grown on nickel foam\, NBU-4/NF@CoOOH. \nThe guest lecture is organised by Dr Sabyasachi Chakrabortty\, Associate Professor & HoD\, Department of Chemistry\, Faculty Advisor\, Energy\, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (CIDR).

SUMMARY:ACCMS Webinar #39
DESCRIPTION:The Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS) Global Centre organises the 39th Webinar on the topic “Emergent Phenomena Exploited at Oxide Heterointerfaces for Unconventional Computing” on April 28\, 2026. \nProf. Tamalika Banerjee\, Professor & Chair of Spintronics\, Functional Materials group\, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials\, University of Groningen\, Netherlands will deliver the webinar. Dr Darwin B Putungan\, Institute of Physics\, College of Arts and Sciences\, University of the Philippines will be the panellist. \nAbstract \nClassical computing based on von Neumann architecture is limited by a memory bottleneck\, high power consumption\, and heat dissipation. This is primarily due to the non-colocation of memory and processing units\, making the hardware sequential and deterministic. These challenges can be efficiently tackled by processing the information on the signal\, similar to what the human brain does. This has spurred the development of alternative\, domain-specific computing paradigms beyond the conventional von-Neumann architecture using analogue devices with memristive materials that can collocate memory and processing in the same functional unit. \nSeveral material systems from phase change memory\, Mott memories\, resistive random access memories\, ferroelectrics\, and ferromagnets have been actively researched\, demonstrating their potential as memristors exhibiting diverse functionalities. In this  webinar\, I will discuss a popular choice of materials and devices\, based on oxide materials\, particularly those possessing competing and coexisting ground states. They offer a rich phase space and are ideal candidates\, where emergent phenomena arising at their heterointerfaces can be tailored by strain and doping and tuned by external stimuli such as temperature\, electric field\, and magnetic field. \nI will discuss two specific cases: In the first part\, I will discuss the areal downscaling of interface memristive devices directly integrated on a semiconducting Nb-doped SrTiO3 (Nb: STO) platform. We show a surprising enhancement in the memristive memory window\, while maintaining analog behavior\, contrary to expectations. The device designs on such semiconductors allow leveraging electric field effects at edges\, increasing the dynamic range in smaller devices with high endurance and low device and cycle variation\, down to the smallest devices with readout at low power. In the second part\, I will show how we uniquely exploit the entire network of strained films of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 by engineering the octahedron tilt at the atomic scale\, to demonstrate complex biologically plausible brain functionalities such as self-oscillation and integrate and fire neurons. The combination of an intrinsic coupled phase transition in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and octahedral distortion due to the textured surface of the LAlO3 substrate leads to multiple negative differential resistance (NDR) regimes in the network\, when electrically driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium\, at room temperature. By sweeping either voltage or current at room temperature\, we find that thermal effects trigger the film toward non-linear transport regimes. By engineering the time dynamics of such metastable phases\, we demonstrate voltage-tunable oscillators that dynamically oscillate at variable frequencies (kHz to MHz) and also show how orbital coupling effects\, induced by local strain\, enrich the phase space of operation of such oscillators. Finally\, I will discuss how the time dynamics of the leaky\, integrate\, and fire neuron network lead to the development of probabilistic bits\, useful for ultra-low power stochastic hardware.
