SUMMARY:Seminar by Distinguished Academician Prof. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Economics is inviting Distinguished Visiting Professor\, Prof. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth for two esteemed seminars on novel topics of social relevance. Prof. Saleth will talk on “Climate Change\, Water\, and Adaptation” on November 29\, 2023\, and “Social Science Research: Theories\, Models\, and Empirical Analysis” on November 30\, 2023. \nJoin the sessions and gain insights from the seasoned academician! \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth is currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts\, SRM University-AP. He is regularly affiliated as an Honorary Professor at the Madras School of Economics\, Chennai. \nProf. Saleth received his MA from Madurai Kamaraj University\, Madurai (1979)\, MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University\, New Delhi (1981)\, and PhD from University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign\, USA (1989). He works in the areas of water resource management\, institutional change\, development policy\, and impact assessment and has published three books\, six edited volumes\, and over 100 research papers in journals and edited volumes related to these areas. \nProf. Saleth has also won awards for some of his papers\, books\, and works from professional organisations such as the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics\, the American Water Resources Association\, the International Water Association\, and the University of South Australia. He has also been a consultant to the World Bank\, Food and Agriculture Organisation\, Asian Development Bank\, UN Economic and Social Council for the Asia and the Pacific\, and UN Environment Programme. \nTalk 1: Climate Change\, Water\, and Adaptation \nAbstract: This presentation covers the nature and magnitude of the impacts of climate change on water resources and possible coping and adaptation options both from global and national perspectives. The presentation starts with a discussion on the leading causes of climate change\, especially the cumulative effects of global warming caused by greenhouse gases and related environmental consequences from human-induced economic activities and ecological disturbances. It\, then\, shows how the impacts of climate change are manifested both at the global and national scale in terms of the spatial and temporal patterns of precipitation and water availability and the resultant implications for water\, agriculture\, and economy. Although climate change is caused essentially by non-hydrological factors\, the water sector continues to be the main medium through which most of its impacts are transmitted to the agricultural sector in particular and other economic sectors in general. As such\, it is but natural for the adaptation/coping strategies also to be designed at the point of the impacted sectors\, though\, admittedly\, general mitigation strategies go far beyond these sectors. The presentation\, finally\, concludes by delineating feasible adaptation strategies for the water sector\, which include not just demand management options but also supply management avenues\, especially those involving institutional changes and infrastructural developments. \nTalk 2: Social Science Research: Theories\, Models\, and Empirical Analysis \nAbstract: This presentation covers the theoretical\, methodological\, and empirical aspects of social science research\, especially from the perspective of young research scholars. It starts with a discussion on the nature\, rationale\, features\, and types of building blocks of social science theories. After an analytical description of three broad types of models\, i.e.\, simple\, interactive\, and path-based models\, the presentation provides concrete illustrations\, particularly for the interactive and path-based models using a few empirical case studies. These illustrative case studies will show how to conceptualize\, operationalize\, and empirically evaluate the research problems in different contexts. The presentation\, finally\, concludes with the discussion on some of the additional methodological\, practical\, and data-related aspects of importance in social science research.

SUMMARY:Amenability of Semihypergroups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The study of different notions of amenability on a given category of objects\, have been one of the most fundamental areas of research in abstract harmonic analysis. In this talk\, we first provide a preliminary overview of the category of semihypergroups. As the name itself suggests\, the category of semihypergroups can be regarded simply as a natural extension to the category of locally compact semigroups\, with abundant examples in different areas of research. We then introduce the concept of amenability in this broader setting\, and discuss several characterizations of the same in terms of certain ergodic\, stationary\, Banach algebraic and hereditary properties of the associated convolutive measure algebras.

SUMMARY:Unveiling the Future of Biomedical Imaging with Prof. Naren Naik
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is pleased to introduce an exciting and enlightening talk by the esteemed Prof. Naren Naik\, a distinguished authority in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur on October 30\, 2023 that promises to push the boundaries of biomedical imaging and research. Prof. Naik will explore the captivating realm of “Dynamic Shape-Based Biomedical Tomographic Reconstruction Algorithms.” This topic represents a cutting-edge fusion of engineering and medicine\, offering remarkable insights into the future of healthcare and diagnostics. \nPrepare to embark on a journey through the intricate world of tomographic reconstruction\, where mathematical algorithms and shape dynamics converge to transform how we visualize and understand the human body. Prof. Naik’s expertise and pioneering research in this field will unveil a world of possibilities and innovations that are set to shape the future of biomedical imaging. \nJoin to unlock the secrets of dynamic shape-based biomedical tomographic reconstruction algorithms! \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Naren Naik specialises in the modelling and reconstruction algorithms for tomographic imaging. He is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Centre of Lasers and Photonics at Indian Institute of Technology\, Kanpur. His major application thrust in the past few years has been in functional biomedical imaging with fluorescence optical and photoacoustic tomography\, as well as electrical impedance and impedance-acoustic tomography. \nAbstract of the Talk \nTomography (coming from the Greek (tomos = slice) is the science of computationally quantitatively obtaining (“reconstructing”) the internal structure of a medium of interest from the data obtained by the interaction of an interrogating signal with the medium. It is an inverse problem where computational signal processing frameworks work together with the physics of radiation-matter interaction to yield the desired interior properties of objects of interest. The talk will first aim to introduce the basic ideas involved in biomedical tomographic imaging with an emphasis on optical-based modalities. The reconstruction problem is defined and classified\, and the algorithmic framework to solve it is discussed. We will then discuss solutions we have developed for dynamic reconstruction problems in a straight path (a dynamic boundary problem) and pharmacokinetic fluorescence photoacoustic (static boundary but time-varying states) tomographies. The latter problem in pharmacokinetic Imaging has vital applications in early cancer detection and metabolic imaging.

SUMMARY:Unlocking the Future: Advancements Towards mRNA-Based Vaccines
DESCRIPTION:In a constantly evolving world\, we believe in celebrating those groundbreaking moments in science that shape our future. The Department of Chemistry organises the 2nd lecture of the Nobel & Ig Nobel Lecture Series–2023 on the “Steps Towards the Development of mRNA-Based Vaccines“. The lecture will delve into the cutting-edge advancements in developing mRNA-based vaccines with a session by Dr Sateesh E\, Department of Chemistry\, on October 19\, 2023. This remarkable scientific achievement holds the potential to transform healthcare and the session will explore it from all angles. \nStay tuned for thought-provoking discussions\, exciting discoveries\, and a glimpse into the minds of some of the most brilliant and unconventional thinkers in the field! \nAbstract \nThe Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2023 was awarded for the breakthrough discovery of nucleoside modifications in mRNA to develop effective mRNA-based vaccines. Their investigation for mRNA vaccine in the place of the conventional vaccine was hampered by the fact that in vitro synthesised mRNAs caused inflammation\, whereas the cell-synthesized mRNAs did not elicit any inflammatory response. However\, the inflammatory reaction was reduced when modified nucleosides were included in the mRNAs. This unravelled mystery of the reduced inflammation by the modified mRNA has led to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery that paved the way to develop effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 that saved millions of lives. This talk will discuss the journey towards the development of mRNA vaccines and their potential for the development of future vaccines and therapeutics.
