SUMMARY:Subjective Information in Social Science Research: Rationale and Legitimacy
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Economics is organising a special lecture on Subjective Information in Social Science Research: Rationale and Legitimacy on May 12\, 2023\, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Prof. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth\, a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Economics\, will deliver the talk. \nAbstract of the talk \nStarting with a brief discussion on different kinds of data or information sources commonly used in social science research\, the presentation then outlines the theoretical logic and practical reasoning for considering “perception” as a legitimate data source for generative valuable subjective or qualitative information. In this respect\, the presentation explains how individuals normally use “adaptive instrumental evaluation” as a tool to organise and synthesise various forms of perceived and observed information and perform a process of ‘mental accounting’ or ‘silent calculation’ so as to derive feasible alternative options or decisions. Such options or decisions are often ranked by checking them against individually derived but generally converging “reference frames”. After providing a few instances where subjective or qualitative information can be the main\, if not the only\, data source for empirical evaluation\, the presentation concludes with a quick review of major methods and survey techniques available for eliciting subjective information. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Rathinasamy Maria Saleth is affiliated as an Honorary Professor at the Madras School of Economics\, Chennai. Prior to this\, he has been Director of the Loyola Institute of Business Administration\, Chennai (2014-15) and the Director of the Madras Institute of Development Studies\, Chennai (2009-14). Earlier\, Prof. Saleth has been a Principal Researcher with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI)\, Colombo\, Sri Lanka (2002-2008); Adjunct Professor at South Australian University\, Adelaide\, Australia (2003-06); Professor of Ecological Economics at the Institute for Social and Economic Change\, Bengaluru (2000-2002); Visiting Researcher\, World Bank\, Washington DC (1998); and Professor of Economics at the Institute for Economic Growth\, Delhi (1992-2000). He received his MA from Madurai Kamaraj University\, Madurai (1979)\, MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University\, New Delhi (1981)\, and PhD from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign\, USA (1989). Prof Saleth works in the areas of resource management\, institutional change\, development policy\, and impact assessment and has published three books\, six edited volumes\, and over 100 research papers in journals and edited volumes related to these areas.

SUMMARY:The Role of Eigenmodes in Hydrodynamic Stability
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The essential concept of many scientific investigations in computational and experimental fluid dynamics is to present an objective and quantitative representation of flow behavior. A thorough understanding of all key processes also lays the groundwork for the incorporation of fundamental fluid effects into technical applications and fluid-based devices. Experiments and numerical computations are the two pillars upon which this process relies. Almost all current techniques in quantitative fluid dynamics rely on a model equation\, most often\, say\, the linearized Navier-Stokes equations and their variants. This model is implemented in the algorithms as a matrix-vector mul-application\, which is critical for maintaining orthogonality or adding robustness to the corresponding approach. However\, only the measured data are available in physical experiments. To reach the same level of quantitative description of fluid processes\, popular algorithms must be adjusted to curtail their reliance on models and limit their input to data exclusively. In this context\, we shall visit from elementary level to modern computational algorithm to accommodate the snapshot based process to understand the model reduction and explore the role of eigenmodes.

SUMMARY:Paving The Way For Next-generation AI
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is organising an interaction for its faculty with the acclaimed academician\, Dr Bharat Ramesh\, Senior Lecturer at International Centre for Neuromorphic Systems\, Western Sydney University\, Australia\, on May 8\, 2023. Dr Ramesh will speak on Neuromorphic Engineering – Paving the way for Next-generation AI. \nAbstract of the talk \nNeuromorphic Engineering is a subfield of Electrical Engineering that aims to apply knowledge of how signals are processed in the brain to build electronic signal processing systems that vastly outperform current digital signal processing systems. Current ‘smart’ sensors are generally sensors with a built-in computer. We aim to develop smart sensors with a built-in brain by combining bio-inspired sensors with bio-inspired signal processing. \nReverse Engineering the Brain – The brain creates a coherent interpretation of the external world based on input from its senses. Yet data from the senses are unreliable and confused. How does the brain determine what is out there in the world around it? Neuromorphic Engineering conducts neurophysiological and psychophysical investigations combined with theoretical\, computational\, and electronic modelling studies to discover how the brain achieves this. The outcomes of this research will then be applied to create intelligent electronic sensors. \nThis talk reviews the fundamentals and properties of neuromorphic sensors and provides a unified view of the main approach taken. Examples are presented to demonstrate the application using a novel setup known as Astrosite. Only about 40% of those satellites are active\, so the potential for disruptions caused by dead satellites and debris in orbit that don’t perform as expected has increased the need to track and monitor objects in space. Western Sydney University has been tackling this problem with bio-inspired (neuromorphic) engineering principles. Using unique event-based sensors on mobile telescopes\, they have demonstrated the ability to capture and track real-time orbital objects day and night. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Bharath’s primary research interests include pattern recognition and computer vision. His research is centred on event-based cameras for computationally efficient machine learning for problems such as object recognition and related areas such as scene understanding\, face recognition\, and object detection. He has published and reviewed papers at well-known AI/ML conferences. He also serves as a reviewer for top conferences such as the CVPR and journals like Transactions on Image Processing (TIP). He received a BE degree in electrical & electronics engineering from Anna University of India in 2009; an MSc and PhD in electrical engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2011 and 2015\, respectively\, while working at the Control and Simulation Laboratory on Image Classification using Invariant Features. \nTo learn more about this cutting-edge technology\, join the session!

SUMMARY:Prof. Irudaya Rajan on Kerala Migration Survey
DESCRIPTION:Migration has become a worldwide phenomenon in the 21st century. Migratory tendencies have been inherent in the context of Kerala\, and it has been shaping the economic and social situation. The economic boom within the Gulf countries gave migration a considerable boost\, reaching its peak in terms of both numbers and remittance. Ironically\, Kerala\, of late\, is witnessing a reverse migration of labour. On this note\, the Department of Economics is organising a distinguished lecture titled “Big Data on Migration” on April 19\, 2024. Distinguished academician and scholar\, Prof. Irudya Rajan\, Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram will deliver the lecture. \nJoin the lecture for a resourceful session! \nAbstract \nThe first Kerala Migration Survey started in 1998 as a part of understanding the impact of migration on individuals\, households\, communities\, the economy\, and society using a stratified multistage random sampling of 10\,000 households. Over the period of the last 25 years\, our sample size has increased from 10000 in 1998 to 15000 in 2008 and 20000 in 2023. The estimates produced through this survey have become an important source for the Government of Kerala for its policy-making decisions regarding migration governance\, particularly return migration during the COVID-19 crisis. Interestingly\, Kerala model migration surveys have been replicated in the following states of India: Tamil Nadu\, Gujarat\, Punjab\, Goa\, Jharkhand and Odisha. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf. Irudya Rajan is a seasoned academician with over 30+ years of teaching experience across the country. He was conferred with a PhD in Demography from the International Institute for Population Sciences\, the University of Mumbai\, in 1989. His research interests include International Migration\, the Economics of Ageing and Demography\, and Population Ageing. An esteemed scholar\, Prof. Rajan has published in various reputed international and national journals\, book chapters and research projects funded by global organisations. He currently holds the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor\, at the Department of Economics\, SRM University-AP and Chairman at The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD)\, Thiruvananthapuram. Prior to this\, he held the position of Professor\, at the Centre for Development Studies\, Thiruvananthapuram. \nSince 1998\, Prof. Rjan coordinated eight large-scale migration surveys in Kerala with Professor K C Zachariah. The success of the Kerala Migration Survey urged neighbouring Indian states like\, Goa (2008)\, Punjab (2009)\, Tamil Nadu (2015)\, and Gujarat (2011) to replicate the same. He also developed the first longitudinal Ageing Survey in India (Kerala) in 2004 and repeated the same every three years. The first Kerala Ageing Survey (KAS) completed its seventh wave in 2022. The second KAS which began in 2013\, completed its fourth wave in 2022.

SUMMARY:Time-series Analysis: An Effective Tool to Understand the Dynamics of Wind Turbines
DESCRIPTION:The Power and Control Society under the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is organising an invited talk on the dynamics and maintenance of wind turbines for effectiveness. Dr Harsh Dhiman\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning\, Symbiosis Institute of Technology\, Symbiosis International University\, Pune\, India will deliver a talk on “Digital Twin Framework for Wind Turbine Condition Monitoring” on April 10\, 2023. The talk will provide insight into time-series analysis and data representation as effective tools in understanding the working of machinery such as wind turbines. \nJoin the talk for a resourceful session! \nAbstract \nA wind turbine is a complex machine with its rotating and non-rotating equipment being sensitive to faults. Due to increased wear and tear\, the maintenance aspect of a wind turbine is of critical importance. The unexpected failure of wind turbine components can lead to increased O&M costs which ultimately reduces the effective power capture of a wind farm. Fault detection in wind turbines is often supplemented with SCADA data available from wind farm operators in the form of a time-series format with a 10-minute sample interval. Moreover\, time-series analysis and data representation has become powerful tool to get a deeper understanding of the dynamic processes in complex machinery like wind turbines. Wind turbine SCADA data is usually available in form of a multivariate time series with variables like gearbox oil temperature\, gearbox bearing temperature\, nacelle temperature\, rotor speed and active power produced. In this preprint\, we discuss the concept of a digital twin for time-to-failure forecasting of the wind turbine gearbox where a predictive module continuously gets updated with real-time SCADA data and generates meaningful insights for the wind farm operator. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Harsh Dhiman is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning\, Symbiosis Institute of Technology\, Symbiosis International University\, Pune\, India. He was conferred with his PhD from the Institute of Infrastructure Technology Research and Management (IITRAM)\, Ahmedabad\, Gujarat. He previously worked as an Assistant Professor\, at the Department of Electrical Engineering\, Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering\, Ahmedabad\, India and as a Data Science Consultant at Symphony Industrial AI\, Bengaluru\, India.
