SUMMARY:Prof. R P Singh on Qubit and Quantum Mechanics
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising the tenth edition of the “Eminent Guest Lecture Series: An Odyssey of Physics” on September 20\, 2023. The eminent lecture will be delivered by Prof. R P Singh\, Physical Research Laboratory\, Ahmedabad who will expound on the topic “Beyond Qubit” and the advantages of developing the quantum system in laboratories for efficient usage. \nJoin the session for an exciting and insightful lecture on Quantum Mechanics! \nAbstract \nA qubit is a two-state quantum-mechanical system\, one of the simplest exhibiting the peculiarity of quantum mechanics\, for example\, the polarization state of a photon. However\, there are quantum systems which can exist in infinite states\, such as the orbital angular momentum (OAM) state of a photon. One can go further and instead of choosing quantum mechanical systems with discrete variables like polarization and OAM\, could consider using quantum systems with continuous variables such as position and momentum or field quadratures. We will discuss creating these quantum systems in the lab and harnessing them to our advantage.

SUMMARY:Deformation-driven mixing in a soft porous medium
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Soils\, textiles\, gels\, and biological tissues are porous and very soft. In these materials\, deformation and fluid flow are strongly coupled through rearrangements of the pore structure. The resulting flow fields\, which are both heterogeneous and unsteady\, can play a key role in the transport and mixing of solutes in practical problems such as groundwater contamination and tissue engineering. Here\, we use a continuum model based on large deformation poroelasticity to study the impact of periodic squeezing on solute transport and mixing in a soft porous medium. Transport occurs through advection\, molecular diffusion\, and hydrodynamic dispersion\, each of which interacts differently with deformation. We identify the key dimensionless control parameters\, explore the resulting deformation and transport regimes.

SUMMARY:Prof. Abhishek Singh on Machine Learning Techniques in Material Sciences.
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising the ninth session of its Eminent Guest Lecture Series: An Odyssey of Physics on the topic “A Machine Learning Framework for Knowledge Discovery” on August 30\, 2023. The session will be delivered by Prof. Abhishek Singh\, Indian Institute of Science\, Bengaluru. He will discuss the application of ML in establishing the complex structure-property relations in alloys. \nJoin the talk for an insight session on Machine Learning in Material Sciences! \nAbstract \nData-driven machine learning methods in materials science are emerging as one of the promising tools for expanding the discovery domain of materials to unravel useful knowledge. In this talk\, the power of these methods will be illustrated by covering two major aspects\, namely\, the development of prediction models and the establishment of hidden connections. For the first aspect\, we have developed accurate prediction models for various computationally expensive physical properties such as band gap\, band edges and lattice thermal conductivity. The prediction model for band gap and band edges is developed on a 2D family of materials -MXene\, which are very promising for a wide range of electronic to energy applications\, which rely on accurate estimation of band gap and band edges. These models are developed with GW-level accuracy and hence can accelerate the screening of desired materials by estimating the band gaps and band edges in a matter of minutes. For the lattice thermal conductivity prediction model\, an exhaustive database of bulk materials is prepared. By employing the high-throughput approach\, several ultra-low and ultra-high lattice thermal conductivity compounds are predicted. The property map is generated from the high-throughput approach\, and four simple features directly related to the physics of lattice thermal conductivity are proposed. The performance of the model is far superior to the physics-based Slack model\, highlighting the simplicity and power of the proposed machine learning models. For the second aspect\, we have connected the otherwise independent electronic and thermal transport properties. \nThe role of bonding attributes in establishing this relationship is unravelled by machine learning. An accurate machine learning model for thermal transport properties is proposed\, where electronic transport and bonding characteristics are employed as descriptors.

SUMMARY:Generalization of Ramanuian Congruence
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Ramanujan made a series of influential conjectures in his 1916 paper &Quotron some arithmetical functions & quot; on what is now called the Ramanujan tau function. In the same paper he also proved a notable congruence mod 691 for the Ramanujan tau function. The existence of such congruences opened the door for many modern developments in the theory of modular forms. For newforms of prime level\, some partial results about the existence of such congruences are known. In this talk\, we discuss and refine some of those results.

SUMMARY:Mathematical Discourse by Dr Narravula Harshvardhan Reddy
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP is organising an engaging Guest Lecture on June 14\, 2023. Dr Narravula Harshavardhan Reddy will speak on Finite Element Techniques for Thin-shell Deployable Space Structures. \n  \n  \nAbstract \nPart 1: Rotation-free finite element analysis \nWhile the majority of analytical analyses of plates and shells rely on Kirchhoff-Love (KL) formulations put forth for thin plates and shells\, modern finite element formulations draw upon the Reissner-Mindlin (RM) theory for moderately thick shells. The finite element formulations based on RM theory treat translations and rotations as independent variables and are advantageous due to their demand for only C0-continuity of the geometry between elements and the use of relatively simple shape functions. Nonetheless\, RM elements suffer from various locking phenomena such as shear locking and are inefficient in analysing very thin shells. With the emergence of stronger materials like carbon fibre-reinforced composites and the realisation of lightweight structures with extremely small thicknesses\, KL finite element formulations utilising only translations as the degrees of freedom are gaining prominence. This talk discusses two such rotation-free finite element formulations: Onate’s EBST [1] and NURBS-based isogeometric analysis [2] for thin-shell structures. \nPart 2: h-adaptive finite element analysis \nThin-shell deployable structures\, including booms and longerons\, undergo complex deformations such as localised folding and buckling\, and snap-through instabilities. These deformations are often accompanied by moving contact surfaces. Nonlinear Finite element analysis of such behaviours requires highly dense meshes in the regions of interest. Since most of the deployable structures such as booms are very long in one dimension compared to the others\, mesh density must be high throughout the domain of the analysis leading to a high computation cost. The computation cost can be reduced by adapting the mesh to the deformation throughout the geometrically nonlinear analysis. This talk focuses on h-adaptive mesh refinement for thin-shell deployable structures. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr Narravula Harshavardhan Reddy is a resourceful Mathematician and researcher\, who has made significant contributions to the understanding and application of mathematical principles in various domains. His impressive academic foundations in Mechanical Engineering from IIT\, Guwahati and Masters and PhD in Aeronautical Sciences from California Institute of Technology\, Pasadena\, CA backed with his extensive experience of about a decade in the realm is truly inspiring. He has 10 noteworthy publications and 4 distinguished talks to his credit. \nJoin the engaging discourse with Dr Reddy and members of the faculty !
