Recognising its significance\, ACTS Club recently organised a highly informative and engaging seminar aimed at enhancing students’ public speaking skills and boosting their confidence in articulating thoughts and ideas before an audience.\nLed by Dr Soni Wadhwa\, Assistant Professor of English the Public Speaking Seminar proved to be a transformative event for students from various departments. Participants gathered with a shared goal of acquiring valuable skills and techniques to excel in the art of public speaking. Dr Wadhwa’s insights were nothing short of inspiring. From the importance of thorough preparation to the subtle nuances of body language\, attendees were equipped with practical tools and techniques to deliver impactful speeches.\n The seminar addressed the common challenges faced by students\, offering solutions and strategies for overcoming stage fright and nervousness. The session was not only informative but also interactive\, encouraging students to actively participate in engaging activities and exercises; attendees had the opportunity to enhance their communication abilities in a supportive and encouraging environment.\nThe importance of effective communication cannot be overstated\, and SRM University-AP’s initiative to organise such seminars reflects its commitment to the holistic development of its students. By providing platforms for students to enhance their public speaking skills\, the university is preparing them for success in all facets of life.

DESCRIPTION:Biography: Priyank Shah (Member\, IEEE) received his B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM)\, Gujarat\, India\, in 2013. He obtained his M. Tech. degree in power systems at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2015. Thereafter\, he received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi\, New Delhi\, India\, in 2020. Following his PhD\, he joined as research fellow at the University of Warwick from Jan 2020 to August 2022. He is a recipient of convocation award entitled Amit Garg Memorial Research Award from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Best Innovative Project Award from Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE)\, in November 2020 and December 2020\, respectively. He is a recipient of the prestigious POSOCO Power System Award (PPSA) in Doctoral category from Power System Corporation (POSOCO)\, Gov. of India Enterprise and Foundation for Innovation & Technology Transfer (FITT)\, IIT Delhi in March 2021. He also secured nomination in Top-10 position in ‘Energy Solution’ category for BRICS Young Scient Award in September 2021. He is currently working as a Lead Engineer at General Electric Digital\, Edinburgh\, United Kingdom. Ltd. He was conferred with a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee with Excellence in Doctoral Research Award. Dr Raveendhra is also the founder of Zunik Energies Pvt. Ltd.\, an incubated Start-up of IIT Roorkee\, funded by TIDES Business Incubator\, IIT Roorkee\, accelerated and supported by AP Innovation Society. He has published two patent disclosures at NS State University\, USA and two Indian patents\, 12 highly reputed Journal publications in IEEE\, Elsevier\, IET and Energies\, etc.\, including 5Book chapters & 30+ IEEE International Conference Papers. Dr Raveendhra is also credited with numerous awards for his research\, including the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement in 2017. In 2002\, he received his B.Sc. degree from ESIEE Amiens\, France\, and his M.Sc. degree in Control Engineering from Univ. Paris Sud 11 in 2003. He was an undergraduate scholar visitor to the University of Twente\, The Netherlands\, and a graduate scholar visitor to the INRIA Sophia Antipolis\, France. In July 2006\, he received his Ph.D. degree cum laude in Control Theory from Univ. Paris Sud 11-L2S. In 2004\, A. Chaillet was recipient of a Marie-Curie Scholarship to visit Università degli Studi di Firenze\, Italy. In 2006–2007\, he served as a post-doc fellow at Centro di Ricerca Piaggio\, Pisa\, Italy. From 2007 to 2016\, he served as an Associate Professor at L2S-Univ. Paris Sud 11-Supélec-EECI. He is now Full professor at CentraleSupélec and junior member of Institut Universitaire de France. His research interests include synchronization analysis for neuroscience applications\, stability analysis and stabilization of nonlinear systems\, control of mechanical systems\, and network controlled systems. The session aims to certify an interactive and insightful exchange between the visiting delegates and the students and faculty of the institution. \nAbout the Delegates \nMr Mark Forehand is the Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Enrollment Management\, The Graduate College – Kennesaw State University\, USA. A proactive leader\, Mr. Mark Forehand is a results-focused professional with cross speciality strengths in Education\, Leadership and Analysis. Prior to his current role\, Mr Forehand served as the Assistant Dean in the Graduate College\, Director of International Student and Scholar Services\, Interim Director of the IEP\, and Director of Academic English Programs in the Division of Global Affairs. A renowned academician and researcher\, Dr Klein received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois with his doctoral dissertation on the theory and modelling of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs. Dr Klein’s research interests involve the theory\, modelling\, and design of semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic materials and devices. He creates and utilizes numerical simulation programs to provide insight into the nano-scale physics of semiconductors. His most recent project is the modelling of multilayered III nitride samples in atom probe tomography (APT) measurement systems to assist in interpreting the measurement data. \nDr Sumit Chakravarty currently works as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Kennesaw State University Lawrenceville\, Georgia\, United States. His area of expertise is in Wireless Communications\, AI and Signal Processing and has worked as a scientist in the industry wherein he has also worked on other sensor modalities commonly used in remote sensing like Multispectral\, Lidar and SAR. This includes working with a cross-disciplinary team comprising specialists from industry\, government bodies like NASA\, Goddard and academia like the University of Maryland. The Colour Painting Contest\, hosted by the Creative Arts Club on February 15\, 2023\, is one such initiative that transformed the campus into a vibrant canvas. The event aimed to channel students’ artistic talents through visual expression while fostering a spirit of friendly competition among the houses. \nStudents\, representing their houses with Ursa (Green)\, Pegasus (Blue)\, Phoenix (Yellow)\, and Orion (Red)\, unleashed their imaginations onto the canvas\, creating mesmerising artworks. The contest aimed at conveying powerful messages through brushstrokes\, colour and form. \nShivangi Narayan\, representing Pegasus\, won the first place with her captivating artwork\, earning 10 points for her house. Swapna B\, from Phoenix\, secured the second position\, adding 5 points to her house’s tally. Their creations dazzled the eyes and ignited a sense of wonder and admiration among everyone. The competition celebrated the boundless creativity that thrives within our campus walls.

SUMMARY:Tax Policies and Inconsistencies: Complexity of the GST Act
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Economics is organising a special lecture by Prof. R Srinivas on December 23\, 2022. The lecture on “Evolving Design of Goods and Services Tax” will highlight the inconsistent buoyancy of the GST tax implemented in India. The Goods and Services Tax was introduced as a harmonised tax system for the taxation of commodities in India in June 2017\, covering more than 60% of the commodity transactions in the country. Union and state governments have been concurrently levying this tax and administering it. There are no differences in tax rates\, tax bases and administration processes across India. Prof. Srinivas will elucidate why the adopted tax system remains complex and yet to be wholly efficient. \nAbstract \nThe effort to harmonise commodity taxation in India started in 1993 at a conference of state finance ministers resolving to move towards a non-distorting Value Added Tax (VAT) system in India. The earlier arrangement of the levy of Excise Duty on production by the Union government and the levy of sales tax on transactions by the state governments created a complex\, economically distorting and non-buoyant tax system. With the adoption of VAT\, the existing problem was thought to be resolved. \nThough all the states adopted VAT in 2006\, the distorting tax system prevailed with differences in tax rates\, tax bases and the continuance of old sales tax on inter-state tax. The Union and state governments formed an empowered committee on commodity taxation in the late 1990s\, and since then negotiations went on to culminate in the implementation of GST in June 2017. \nThough the GST is supposed to be buoyant\, it is not consistently buoyant to be considered a reliable source of revenue. The two major commodities\, petroleum products and liquor are outside the GST. This continues to distort the commodity tax system. The creation of the GST council to resolve conflicts between states and between union and state governments on issues relating to GST is also seen as another source of political friction by the states who have given up a substantial portion of their tax powers. In terms of tax administration\, smaller firms face unsurmountable difficulties in adhering to the regulations of the GST act in terms of filing tax returns and getting refunds of tax credits. \nTherefore\, with several conflicts remaining unresolved the GST as a system of commodity taxation is still evolving and has yet to reach a level of maturity and stability. \nAbout the speaker \nProf. R Srinivasan is a Professor of Economics at the University of Madras and is currently a permanent member of the State Planning Commission of Tamil Nadu. Previously\, he was the Head of the Department of Econometrics at the University of Madras. He has a distinguished academic career and is a proven outstanding teacher and researcher of Economics. He has been conferred with an MA and PhD from the Department of Economics at the University of Madras. Prof Srinivasan also served as the Registrar of the University of Madras. \nProf R Srinivasan has a keen interest and research focus in Public Finance and Tamil Nadu Economy. He has exclusively written articles in Journals and Print media in English and Tamil and has publications in national and internationally acclaimed journals.
