SUMMARY:Sunshine 2022: A Day Spent in the Service of Others
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Children’s Day\, SRM University-AP organises “Sunshine- 2022”\, an event to celebrate Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary. The varsity organised the celebrations at Vijaya Mary Integrated School for the Blind – Gunadala\, Vijayawada. \nPandit Nehru held children in high regard. He believed “Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured\, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow”. The event was organised with the aim of raising awareness about the rights\, education\, and welfare of the children at the blind school. Various competitions and fun activities were organised to engage the students. The varsity students also took part in entertaining the students with games and other performances. Students of the varsity also interacted with the faculty of the blind school in order to understand the students’ conditions better. Winners of the competitions were rewarded with water bottles. \nThe celebrations culminated with the varsity distributing food\, chocolates and juice to the children. The children felt delighted and spent a joyful time with the SRM AP family.

On this note\, the Department of Mathematics is organising a Department Distinguished Lecture on the topic “Lie groups as a unifying theme in mathematics: from Algebra and Number theory to Geometry and Topology”\, on November 05\, 2022. Prof Dipendra Prasad\, IIT Bombay is the keynote speaker of the session. \nAbout the Speaker \nProf Dipendra Prasad is an eminent mathematician working in the area of Representation Theory. He was conferred with his PhD from Harvard University under the supervision of Prof Benedict Gross. Among many other accomplishments\, Prof Prasad is celebrated for his famous conjecture Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture\, which has attracted attention of several established mathematicians. In recognition of his contributions\, the Government of India has awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Mathematical Sciences in 2002. Apart from that he holds the JC Bose fellowship awarded by the Department of Science and Technology\, New Delhi. He is also a recipient of the Swarna Jayanti Fellowship in the year 1999. He was the Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematicians\, 2018 in Rio de Janeiro in Section 7 (Lie Groups and Generalizations) with the talk ‘Ext-analogues of branching laws’.

Mr Praveen Kommuri\, Senior Mobile Developer\, iOS and Mr Yashwanth Muddana\, Full Stack Developer will address the webinar. \nAbout the speaker \nMr Praveen Kommuri has 11+ years of experience in iOS & amp; Mac application design and development. Currently\, he is working as a Senior Mobile Developer\, Senior Mobile Developer – iOS\, Stanley Black & Decker\, Inc.\, USA. Prior to this\, he worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Way.com\, Inc. USA from January 2017 to September 2021. Whilst in Way.com\, he redesigned the Way app from scratch with brand new features. Being the lead\, he has participated in UI discussions and implemented many UI and functional modules. He has taken data driven decisions based on Analytics data and implemented A/B Test on all new features. He improved app ratings from hundreds to 25k in a short time and collected valuable user feedback incorporated in the immediate releases. He worked as a consultant in Apple\, Sunnyvale\, California\, USA where he worked on Apple’s internal iOS and Mac applications. He also served as a system analyst and system software engineer in QueST Global\, Aspire Infolabs Pvt Ltd. Mr Praveen worked across multiple projects and threads. His creative thinking\, expertise\, and positive can-do attitude is awe inspiring. Mr Praveen’s strengths in pro-actively offering solutions and ideas\, strong technical skill and being adept at all aspects of communications is an example for budding technophiles. \nMr Yashwanth Muddana is a Full Stack Developer who is passionate about solving the challenging problems with tech solutions. Mr Muddana is a React JS and React Native developer\, UI/UX designer. He uses Node for the server and MySQL and MongoDB for the database. He worked as a Software Developer\, Zasket (Part Time) from September 2021 to May 2022. He has secured a job in Krypto Company with a CTC of 60 LPA and is also working on his own start up idea.

DESCRIPTION:India has become a leading exponent of stellar growth in its 75 year long journey since independence. The nation has transgressed subsisting limitations to make remarkable progress as an emerging power. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is organising the fifteenth edition of the University Distinguished Lecture series on the topic “India at 75 and beyond” to reflect and devise a holistic approach to attain our future vision for our country. Dr C Rangarajan\, renowned economist and former Governor of Reserve Bank of India\, is the keynote speaker of this insightful session. \nAbout the speaker \nDr C Rangarajan is a prominent economist of India who has played a key role both as an academician and a policy maker. He has held several esteemed positions which include Governor of Reserve Bank of India\, Governor of Andhra Pradesh as well as Chairman\, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister in the rank of Cabinet Minister. He is currently the Chairman of Madras School of Economics. \nHe served as the 19th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India during 1992-97 at a time when India embarked on wide-ranging economic reforms which fundamentally altered the structure of the Indian economy. India became a member of the Bank for International Settlements during his tenure. \nDr C Rangarajan has authored numerous books on Indian economy including “Tracking the Indian Economy: A Collection of Articles” (2017)\, “Federalism and Fiscal Transfers in India” (co-author) (2011) and several others. He was the President of the Indian Economic Association in 1988 and the President of the Indian Econometric Society in 1994. \nDr Rangarajan is the recipient of several prestigious awards. Notable among them are the Honorary Fellow of the Indian Institute of Management\, Ahmedabad and the ‘Finance Man of the Decade’ by the Bombay Management Association. SUMMARY:Language and Mathematics Education: A broad overview
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The role language plays in teaching and learning of mathematics has been a matter of enquiry for more than 4 decades now. The first paper addressing this issue appeared in the year 1979 in Educational Studies in Mathematics. Some of the early studies on language and mathematics education examined bilingual/ language minority students’ performance in mathematics from a deficit perspective. However\, recent classroom studies focusing on socio-cultural perspectives argue that minoritized languages rather than being a barrier can in fact be a resource for learning mathematics. Though there is very little research on mathematics education in India\, the work of NGOs such as Eklavya have engaged with the language issue in the mid 80’s.

Renowned Indian Mathematician Prof D S Nagaraj is the keynote speaker of the lecture. \nDate: September 21\, 2022 \nTime: 3.30 PM \nVenue: Tiered classroom\, Level 5 \nThe talk will explain the concept of vector bundles and mapping between vector bundles\, a natural generalisation of vector spaces\, and linear mapping between vector spaces. He has significantly impacted a generation of mathematicians as a researcher and a great teacher. He was elected as a fellow of the Indian academy of sciences in 2010 and 2017.

Dr Anurag Singh\, Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy\, NIT Delhi\, will deliver a talk on the topic “Federated Learning”. \nAbstract of the talk \nThe most crucial resource for any business\, individual\, or person in the world is data. Everyone\, whether an individual or an institution\, wants to prevent a data breach. High-quality data must be subjected to machine learning algorithms. The model is trained using traditional machine learning techniques\, which save data to one server. There is a chance that this method will expose personal information. A machine learning technique called federated learning (FL) enables machine learning models to train on various datasets located on various sites without sharing data. Without putting training data in a centralised location\, it enables the development of a common global model. Additionally\, it permits personal information to stay in local places\, lowering the risk. \nA new area of machine learning called federated learning already offers greater advantages than conventional machine learning techniques. \nData Security: Training data is kept locally on the devices\, negating the need for a data pool. \nData variety: Heterogeneous data since it incorporates information from various users. \nReal-time continuous learning: Client data is used to enhance models continuously. \nFederated Learning is applied in the field of IoT\, Healthcare\, smartphones\, Advertising\, Autonomous Vehicles etc. \nSpeaker’s Profile \nDr Anurag Singh is currently working as the Associate Professor and Dean of Research and Consultancy at NIT Delhi. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research areas are Network Theory\, Dynamics on/of Networks\, Opinion Dynamics\, Epidemic Modeling\, Intelligent transportation system etc. Dr Anurag Singh has teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has taught courses ranging from the introductory level to specialized courses in Computer Science and Engineering\, and Mathematics. Currently\, he is mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels at the National Institute of Technology Delhi\, India. In addition\, he has also been supervising PhD students. He has around 70 publications featured across various leading journals and three DST-funded projects to his credit.
