SUMMARY:SRM University–AP to Host Guest Talk on Hybrid Quantum Simulations for HPCQC
DESCRIPTION:The Office of the Dean–Research\, SRM University–AP\, is organising a distinguished Guest Talk by Dr Namrataa Kommineni\, AICTE Industry Fellow at HPC Tech\, CDAC–Pune\, on January 29\, 2026. \nThe talk\, titled “Exploring Hybrid DFT Quantum Embedding Simulations of Molecules for HPCQC\,” will focus on emerging approaches that integrate Hybrid Density Functional Theory (DFT) with quantum embedding techniques to enable advanced molecular simulations. The session will highlight how active molecular regions can be treated with high-fidelity quantum methods\, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE)\, while being embedded within scalable DFT environments. \nDr Kommineni will discuss how accuracy and computational efficiency scale with system size and complexity using noiseless estimation on quantum platforms. The findings demonstrate significant efficiency gains compared to traditional correlated quantum chemistry methods and underline the importance of continued exploration at the intersection of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Quantum Computing (QC). \nThe talk is expected to provide valuable insights for researchers\, faculty members\, and students interested in quantum chemistry\, materials science\, and next-generation computational simulations\, emphasising the role of HPC-QC in bridging fundamental quantum rigor with real-world\, materials-scale applications.

SUMMARY:Chemistry Guest Lecture on O-Alkynyl-Nitriles
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is organising a Guest Lecture on the topic “O-Alkynyl-Nitriles: A New Building Block for Construction of Small Organic Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest“ on February 05\, 2026. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Akhilesh K Verma\, FNA\, FRSC\, Senior Fellow\, Institution of Eminence (IoE)\, Senior Professor (Organic Chemistry)\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Delhi. \nAbstract \nThe simplicity\, efficiency\, and generality of reactions using alkynes have led to its applications in the synthesis of a wide variety of small organic molecules and natural products. Developing synthetic strategies for the direct synthesis of amino-substituted small molecules in terms of selectivity\, operational simplicity\, functional group tolerance\, and\nenvironmental sustainability is in constant demand as the majority of drugs; drug-like compounds contain hetero atoms at their core. In continuation of our interest in the synthesis of small organic molecules using alkynes and super-base chemistry\, we have successfully engineered the synthesis of a variety of biologically important scaffolds using ortho-alkynyl/alkenyl aryl nitriles. In this presentation\, I would like to discuss some recent results in this chemistry. \n

SUMMARY:Kafka the Hikikomori: Rethinking Decision\, Delay\, and Melancholy in Contemporary Life
DESCRIPTION:Department of Media Studies\, Easwari School of Liberal Arts (ESLA)\, SRM University-AP\, is hosting a talk titled “Kafka the Hikikomori:Decision\, Procrastination\, and Melancholy”. The talk invites audiences into a rich philosophical exploration of decision-making\, hesitation\, and the emotional realities of modern existence. \nThe session examines how acts of delay\, uncertainty\, and withdrawal shape human thought and behaviour. Rather than viewing procrastination or indecision as weaknesses\, the lecture frames them as meaningful conditions shaped by reflection\, possibility\, and the pressure of choice in contemporary life. \nConcept and Intellectual Context \nDrawing on the works of Franz Kafka\, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz\, and Gilles Deleuze\, the lecture places literature and philosophy into dialogue to rethink how decisions are formed. Kafka’s protagonists—often caught in cycles of waiting\, doubt\, and repetition—become figures through which modern psychological and social conditions can be understood. \nLeibniz’s reflections on deliberation and hesitation are revisited to examine how thought itself can suspend action. Deleuze’s reinterpretation of decision as struggle rather than assertion opens up a different way of understanding agency—not as a moment of certainty\, but as a process shaped by time\, repetition\, and difference. The talk also engages ideas associated with Félix Guattari to consider how identity\, environment\, and social structures influence our ability to act. \nCentral to the lecture is the contemporary phenomenon of hikikomori\, or extreme social withdrawal. Reading Kafka through this lens\, the session explores how isolation\, introspection\, and emotional fatigue shape modern subjectivity. Decision emerges not as a simple exercise of willpower\, but as something fragile\, delayed\, and negotiated within a complex web of internal and external pressures. \nSpeaker \nJoff P N Bradley\nFull Professor of English and Philosophy at Teikyo University\, Tokyo. His research spans cinema studies\, post-media theory\, Deleuze studies\, educational philosophy\, and Japanese cultural contexts. With extensive international academic engagement\, his work explores how philosophy intersects with technology\, media\, and contemporary social life. \nWhy This Talk Matters \nIn a world defined by constant decision-making\, information overload\, and growing social isolation\, this lecture asks urgent questions: \n\nWhat does it mean to hesitate in an age that demands speed and productivity?\nCan procrastination be understood as a philosophical condition rather than a personal failure?\nHow do repetition\, reflection\, and self-awareness reshape our capacity to act?\nWhat might it mean to interrupt cycles of melancholy and reclaim agency?\n\nBy connecting philosophy\, literature\, and contemporary lived experience\, the session offers new ways to understand emotional life\, intellectual struggle\, and the complexities of modern subjectivity. \nAudience \nThis lecture is open to students\, researchers\, faculty\, and anyone interested in philosophy\, literature\, media studies\, psychology\, and contemporary cultural thought. It will be particularly relevant for those exploring questions of decision-making\, procrastination\, self-reflection\, and the experience of living in an increasingly introspective and disconnected world.

SUMMARY:UDL#23 - Is AI Really Useful for Materials Science?
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Dean-Research is organising the 23rd edition of the University Distinguished Lecture inviting Prof. Stefano Sanvito\, Professor and Chair of Condensed Matter Theory\, School of Physics and Director\, CRANN (Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices)\, Trinity College Dublin\, Ireland. \nTitle of the Lecture: “Is AI Really Useful for Materials Science?” \nAbstract \nAI and machine learning have rapidly become important tools for our daily life\, providing assistance over many tasks. These\, however\, often concern relatively low-stake domains\, such as idea generation\, text summarisation\, automated paper writing/ reviewing\, etc. The physical sciences\, however\, demand far more: accuracy at the level of experimental validation\, reproducibility across thousands of steps and the orchestration of a vast and diverse toolset. \nIn this talk I will describe our attempts at integrating machine-learning and AI methods into materials science\, by looking at rather different domains. Firstly\, I will discuss a machine-learning scheme for predicting the Curie temperature of ferromagnets\, which uses solely the chemical composition of a compound as feature and experimental data as target [1]. In particular\, I will discuss how to develop meaningful feature attributes for magnetism and how these can be informed by experimental and theoretical results. Furthermore\, I will show how the experimental data can be mined from published scientific literature with the help of natural language processing tools [2]. \nThen\, I will describe how an accurate description of the structure of materials\, which is amenable to be used with machine learning\, can offer a quantum-chemistry-accurate description of local properties at virtually no computational costs. This is based on a newly developed cluster expansion formulated in terms of Jacobi-Legendre polynomials. Such general framework allows us to construct\, on the same footing\, extremely accurate force fields [3] as well as converged electron densities [4]. These can both be integrated in material-discovery workflows generating unprecedented speedup. \nFinally\, I will present two examples of how visual-graphic techniques can be integrated into materials science. In the first case autoencoder neural networks will be used to denoise scanning electron transmission microscopy images [5]\, thus allowing us to perform microscopy on fragile samples\, which rapidly degrade under electron irradiation. In the second case\, I will use movie- enhancement methods to provide high-resolution tomographic maps of complex materials complexes [6]. Importantly\, the same method can also be used for medical imaging and can be incorporated in medical devices. \n[1] Physical Review Materials 3\, 104405 (2019). \n[2] npj Computational Materials 9\, 222 (2023). \n[3] Physical Review B 108\, 094102 (2023). \n[4] npj Computational Materials 9\, 87 (2023). \n[5] Machine Learning: Science and Technology 4\, 015025 (2023). \n[6] Nature Communications 15\, 7962 (2024).

SUMMARY:Research Seminar on Quantum Error Correction via Purification
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics\, School of Engineering and Sciences (SEAS) at SRM University-AP is pleased to host a Research Seminar on “Quantum Error Correction via Purification”. \nDr Amit Kumar Pal\, Associate Professor of Physics at IIT Palakkad\, an accomplished researcher in quantum information and computation\, will deliver the session. \nQuantum computation holds immense potential to solve complex problems that remain intractable for even the most powerful classical computers. A critical step toward building large-scale\, fault-tolerant quantum systems is the development of effective quantum error correction techniques. \nIn this seminar\, Dr Pal will explore how measurements on an auxiliary system can be employed to purify desired quantum states and how this approach connects to quantum error correction. Through illustrative examples\, he will also highlight the key challenges in this endeavour. \nFaculty members\, researchers\, and students interested in quantum physics and emerging computational technologies are encouraged to attend this insightful session.
