SUMMARY:Lie groups as a unifying theme in mathematics: from Algebra and Number theory to Geometry and Topology.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Groups are encountered early on in one’s education. Many groups that one learns already in undergraduate studies are in fact matrix groups with coefficients which can be numbers from finite fields to real and complex numbers or these days p-adic numbers. Such groups\, called finite groups of Lie type or real Lie groups or p-adic groups as the case may be\, have been playing a dominant role in many parts of mathematics. The lecture will be a gentle introduction to some of these topics.

SUMMARY:Igniting the innovative spirit
DESCRIPTION:“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible”- Arthur C Clarke \nThe indomitable spirit to give birth to the impossible is the magical force that keeps changing the face of the world. Every innovation\, be it in the field of technology\, medicine\, or entrepreneurship\, has paved the way for colossal changes simplifying life on earth. The sheer ability to think and innovate is what made human beings the ruling power. All the amenities and services that we revel in today would not have come into existence without the power to innovate. \nAs the world is surging ahead with far-reaching developments at an unimaginable pace\, there is no question about equipping society to embrace these changes and equally be an unflinching source instigating such changes. Learning in the present era is beyond the ability to read\, write and pass with flying colours. True learning does not take place without igniting the spark of creativity hidden inside every individual. The Entrepreneurship Cell has scheduled the launch of their latest endeavour “Innovation Square” to put on show the unrelenting power of innovation of our students. \nDate: May 10\, 2022 \nTime: 05.30 pm \nVenue: Tiered Classroom

SUMMARY:Density Dependent Behavior at Habitat Boundaries and the Allee Effect via Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Habitat edges can have a number of effects on populations\, including modifying their patterns of dispersal. Dispersal patterns can influence population dynamics. In this talk\, we will explore the possible effects of a pattern of dispersal where the response of organisms to the boundary of a habitat patch depends on their local density. This talk will discuss some mathematical models for the population growth of organisms having diffusing and nonlinear per capita growth inside a patch\, but with the likelihood of an individual crossing the patch boundary to leave the patch decreases as the local density of conspecifics within the patch increases. Such behaviour at patch boundaries has been observed among Glanville fritillary butterflies and has been proposed as a mechanism for generating an Allee effect at the patch level. These models predict that the behavior can indeed induce an Allee effect at the patch level even though there is no such effect built into the local population dynamics inside the patch. Also\, we will discuss how per capita growth and boundary behaviours impact the Allee effects. The models are relatively simple and are not intended to give a complete description of any particular population but only to verify the idea that the mechanism of density-dependent dispersal behaviour at a patch boundary is capable of altering population dynamics within the patch.

SUMMARY:Know your style of writing
DESCRIPTION:The art of writing can be branched out into different types depending upon the purpose of each piece of writing. You might have come across varied styles of writing such as creative writing\, academic writing\, technical writing and many more. Have you ever tried to deduce the difference between all these writing styles? Well\, we offer you an informative session that will help you gather a better understanding of different styles of writing. \nThe Department of English has scheduled a webinar on the topic “Academic Writing & Creative Writing” under the theme “Language and Society” with Prof Vanessa Sasson as the keynote speaker. \nDate: May 05\, 2022 \nTime: 6.30 PM IST \nAcademic writing and creative writing seem to be pulling the act of writing and the writers in two different directions. A lot of writers\, especially aspiring writers\, tend to think of both genres as catering to very different audiences and fulfilling very different needs in very different contexts. Does that mean you can be only one and not the other? Do you have to choose? And how do you decide what to commit to? In this talk\, Prof Vanessa Sasson will share her experience of writing in both capacities and discuss the joys and challenges of both. \nAbout the Speaker \nVanessa R Sasson is a professor of Religious Studies in the Liberal Arts Department of Marianopolis College where she has been teaching since 1999. She is also a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State and a Research Member for CERIAS at UQAM. She has published widely as a scholar\, with a number of academic books to her credit. Her most recent book was published by the University of Hawaii Press (2021) and is entitled\, Jewels\, Jewelry\, and Other Shiny Things in the Buddhist Imaginary. Yasodhara and the Buddha (Bloomsbury\, 2021) is her first novel. She is currently completing the sequel. \nJoin the Webinar to master the art of writing!

SUMMARY:Demystifying the essence of yoga
DESCRIPTION:“Yoga is the practice of tolerating the consequences of being yourself”  – Bhagavad Gita \nHave you ever tried to demystify the meaning of yoga? Yoga\, sometimes undefinable\, is a multifaceted term having several layers of meaning embedded into it. For some\, it’s a form of exercise. For some others\, yoga is a religion or a philosophy. And you may have also come across the perception deduced by many that yoga is just a way of life. So\, what exactly is yoga? How do you give it an all-encompassing definition? \nThe term yoga literally means “union”. It is the coming together of body\, mind\, emotions\, and energy to render you the complete experience of being you. It takes one on the transcendental journey to explore one’s true self. It also anchors as an ultimate solution to all the sufferings and woes that weigh you down. \nThe Department of Student Affairs is hosting a series of events marking the arrival of International Yoga Day\, 2022. As part of the series\, a yoga session has been organised to walk our students through the enchanting exercise of knowing thyself. \nDate: April 28\, 2022 \nTime: 3.35 pm \nVenue: New Academic Block- S207 \nWe invite all our students to take this infant stride into a bigger journey of discovering the inner self.

SUMMARY:Scalar conservation laws in one space dimension with strict convex flux
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics is arranging the fifth instalment of the Departmental Distinguished Lecture Series on April 25\, 2022\, at 3.45 pm IST. Reputed Mathematician\, Prof A Adimurthi will deliver an informative lecture on the topic ‘Controllability of Scalar Conservation Laws with Discontinuous Flux’. \nAbout the Talk \nNavier-Stokes and Euler equations play an important role in studying the flow of incompressible fluids. Weak solutions to these equations can be obtained by Galerkin method but the uniqueness is a big open problem. It is a big challenge to obtain an extra condition for the class of functions\, so that in this class obtain the existence and uniqueness. To understand this phenomenon\, it is better to look at a one-dimensional case where the equation turns out to be viscous Burger’s equation or Burger’s equation with non-linearity is of quadratic order. In this talk\, we will restrict to Burger’s type equations called the Scalar Conservation Laws in one space dimension with strict convex flux. Way back in the 50’s\, this equation was studied by Lax and Oleinik and obtained an explicit formula for a solution. Oleinik showed that this satisfies an extraction called the Entropy Condition and then showed that in this class\, the solution is unique. Later Kruzkov\, in an ingenious way\, generalized this to obtain a unique solution for Scalar Conservation Law in higher dimensions and Lipschitz fluxes. This result was taken up by Zuazua and his collaborators and studied the Optimal Controllability for Burgers equation. They showed the existence of optimal control and to capture this\, they derived a numerical algorithm whose convergence is still open. In a different direction\, this was attacked\, and the problem was completely solved. Getting the optimal solution is via projection method in a Hilbert space. Recently\, this was extended in a non-trivial way to conservation laws with convex discontinuous flux. The talk will explain the main ideas of this work. \nAbout the Speaker \nA mathematician of repute\, Prof A Adimurthi has been associated with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\, Centre for Applicable Mathematics Bangalore. At present\, he is working as a visiting professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics\, IIT Kanpur. He has authored more than a hundred research articles on a wide range of topics including Partial differential equations\, Functional analysis\, Numerical analysis\, Calculus of variations\, Optimal control\, and many others. Prof Adi Adimurthi has been elected as a fellow of; The Indian Academy of Sciences (F.A.Sc) Bengaluru (1996)\, The National Academy of Sciences (F.N.A.Sc)\, India in 1997\, The Indian National Science Academy (F.N.A) in 1998\, The World Academy of Sciences(TWAS) in 2018\, Raja Ramanna and DST J.C. Bose National. Along with these fellowships\, Professor Adimurthi has also been honoured with the prestigious Dr Zakir Hussain Award in 2013.

SUMMARY:Redefining the beauty standards
DESCRIPTION:Imagine being taught from a very young age that you must cater to the expectations of each and everyone around you but not yours. Think about the times you tried to fit yourself in someone else’s set of standards. Falling into the rabbit hole of hating our own appearance has become easy ever since the media started setting unrealistic beauty standards. Rise of social media fitness gurus and influencers\, who are obsessed with the unreasonable “flaws” in our bodies\, accelerated the process. This led to a myriad of issues ranging from eating disorders to anxiety and depression. \nClaiming the existence of an alternate explanation of beauty outside the stereotypes is thus the need of the hour. Cherishing yourself the way you are is not just an act of love but a socio-political statement. The ability to choose how to use your own body\, irrespective of an outsider’s opinion\, is an essential right of every individual. \nThe Department of Student Affairs is organising a session\, ‘Reclaiming bodily autonomy’ with Ms Sridevi Srinath to help you unlearn the standard narratives of beauty. Let you be the one who decides what to do and what not to do with your body. \nDate: April 23\, 2022 \nTime: 11.00 am to 12.00 pm IST

SUMMARY:Ultra-low power and agile IC design for novel sensor nodes for the Internet of Things
DESCRIPTION:The Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly increased our awareness of the world and broadened the scope of our engagement with it. In the first episode of the ECE Department Guest Lecture Series\, the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at SRM University-AP is organising a lecture on April 23\, 2022\, from 10.20 am to 12.00 noon. Dr Orazio Aiello\, Assistant Professor at the University of Genoa\, Italy\, will engage the audience on the topic Ultra-Low-Power and Agile IC Design for novel Sensor Nodes for the Internet of Things on that day. \nThe vision of a world where pervasive integrated electronic systems embedded in everyday life objects (e.g. household appliances\, surveillance cameras\, healthcare systems) are fully interconnected to collect\, process\, and exchange useful information requires energy-autonomous systems for distributed sensing and data acquisition. The low-cost requirement demands a small area\, low design effort\, digital-like shrinkage across CMOS generations\, and design/technology portability. The possibility to exploit the digital (automated) design flow even for analog building blocks can dramatically reduce the design effort of any system-on-chip that faces the analog signal. Since data processing is digital\, but most signals from the real world are analog\, almost any electronic device that interfaces with the surrounding environment will benefit from the outcomes of this investigation. In this framework\, the talk illustrates the concepts and the design flows which enable the implementation of analog functions by true digital circuits. \nBiography of the speaker: \nOrazio Aiello (Senior Member\, IEEE) received the BSc and MSc degrees (cum laude) from the University of Catania\, Italy\, in 2005 and 2008\, respectively\, the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) from the Scuola Superiore di Catania\, Italy\, in 2009\, and the PhD degree from the Politecnico di Torino\, Italy\, in 2013.\,From 2008 to 2009\, he was an Analog IC Designer and an EMC Consultant for STMicroelectronics\, Castelletto\, Italy. In 2012\, he was a Visiting PhD. A student with Monash University\, Melbourne\, Australia. In 2013\, he was a Research Fellow in a joint project with FIAT-Chrysler Automobiles\, Turin. In 2014\, he joined NXP-Semiconductors\, Nijmegen\, The Netherlands\, as a Mixed Signal IC Designer and an EMC Expert. In 2015 and 2016\, he was a Visiting Fellow with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales\, Sydney\, Australia. Since 2015\, he has been working with the Green IC Group\, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)\, National University of Singapore\, where he has also been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual and a Global Fellow leading the ULPIoT project. He is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Genova\, Italy. His main research interests include energy-efficient analogue-mixed signal circuits and sensor interfaces. Dr Aiello is a member of the IEEE CASS Microlearning AdHoc Committee and is/was a Technical Program Committee Member of a number of conferences\, such as NORCAS and APCCAS. \nJoin this informative lecture with Dr Orazio Aiello on April 23\, 2022 at 10.20 am IST.
