SUMMARY:Colloquium on The Charm and Beauty of Particles
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a colloquium on the topic “The Charm and Beauty of Flavour” on August 13\, 2025. Distinguished academician\, Prof. Uma Sankar\, Department of Physics\, IIT Bombay\, Mumbai will deliver the comprehensive session. \nAbstract \nThe nature is filled with a bewildering variety of objects and materials. Over the centuries\, the chemists have built a simplified picture\, in which all the objects are made up of about 90 elements. During the past century\, the physicists tried to simplify this picture even further. But\, in this process\, they have encountered newer and stranger particles\, which were never even thought of before. I will describe this new picture\, built by the physicists over the last century which is built on charm and beauty. \nDate: August 13\, 2025 \nTime: 3.00 PM – 4.00 PM \nVenue: V-201\, Vikram Sarabhai Block \nJoin the colloquium and gain a brand-new perspective about the world around you!

SUMMARY:Explore Astrophysics with Dr Shubhrangshu Ghosh
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a guest seminar on the topic “Observational Evidence for Black Holes in the Era of Mega-telescope and Multi-messenger Astronomy”. The seminar will be delivered by Dr Shubhrangshu Ghosh\, Centre for Astrophysics\, Gravitation and Cosmology (CAGC) & Department of Physics\, SRM University Sikkim\, on July 30\, 2025. \nAbstract \nBlack holes (BHs) are one of the most remarkable predictions of Einsteinian gravity. A plethora of overwhelming evidence appears to be quite compelling about the existence of astrophysical BHs in the observable Universe. These astrophysical BHs have\, so far\, been observed predominantly in two distinct mass flavors: as stellar-mass BHs in the range of ∼ (5 − 30) solar masses\, ubiquitous and widespread in the galaxies\, with several of them residing in close binary star systems; and as supermassive BHs (SMBHs) in the range of ∼ (10^6 − 10^10) solar mass dwelling in the nucleus/centre of virtually all large galaxies\, and of yet unknown origin. Although invisible due to their event horizon\, their presence is primarily inferred through accreting matter falling on them\, ejection of powerful relativistic radio-emitting jets from their vicinity\, often showing superluminal motion\, orbital motion of stars around nuclei/centres of galaxies\, and through detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from binary mergers. These BHs drive some of the most energetic phenomena in the observed Universe: with the stellar BH binary systems appearing as one of the brightest X-ray sources in our local galaxy\, namely the BH X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) accompanied by strong X-ray variability in their spectrum; and on the other hand\, the nucleus of active galaxies (AGNs) emit enormous amount of electromagnetic energy in all wavelengths\, appearing as the most luminous persistent sources in the Universe. The measured masses of SMBHs are strongly correlated with properties of their host galaxies\, suggesting that these BHs have a strong influence on the formation and evolution of entire galaxies\, primarily through radio jet-AGN feedback\, thus shaping much of our contemporary observed Universe. The recent direct imaging of SMBHs in the centre of Messier 87 and our galactic centre (Sgr A*) by Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) mission\, and the first direct detection of GW in a coalescing binary BH system\, GW150914\, by the LIGO project\, have provided a remarkable new window to this field. With the existing and upcoming next-generation telescope/detector facilities\, both ground and space-based\, like SKAO\, ELT\, Lynx\, Athena\, CTA\, KAGRA\, LISA\, DESIGO\, ET\, including several Indian missions like AstroSat\, XPoSat\, INSIST\, LIGO India\, etc\, which will provide a complete view of these high-energy sources through multi-messenger and multi-wavelength data with unprecedented accuracy. \nDr Ghosh will address these aspects\, providing an overview of the field’s current status and future directions. \nJoin the session for an invigorating exploration through astrophysics!

SUMMARY:Random Forest based Machine Learning Algorithm for Estimating State of Charge in Lithium-ion Batteries.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This paper proposes a Random Forest (RF) machine learning algorithm-based\nprediction model for the state of charge (SoC) level of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. To show the effectiveness of the proposed prediction model performance\, the RF model has been compared with the other machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Gradient Boosting (GB) approaches. The dataset includes cell temperature\, state of charge (SoC)\, voltage\, and current readings at three different external temperatures—15\, 25\, and 30 degrees Celsius are considered in this paper to test the performances of the proposed model. After preprocessing of the dataset\, 20% of the data was used for testing and the remaining 80% for training purposes. The various metrics such as mean squared error (MSE)\, mean absolute error (MAE)\, coefficient of determination (R^2)\, root mean squared error (RMSE)\, normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE)\, residual standard error (RSE)\, and relative absolute error (RAE) are usually preferred to evaluate the performance of the prediction models. The simulation results of the proposed model clearly show the effectiveness of SoC-level estimation for real-time battery management systems (BMS) when compared to other machine learning algorithms. The efficiency of the proposed model is 99% and execution time is less than 5 seconds. The accurate estimation of the SOC of lithium-ion batteries is crucial for optimizing battery performance\, ensuring safety\, and extending battery life in electric vehicles.\nVenue: Raipur\nInstitute: NIT Raipur

SUMMARY:Dr Rajendra Kuraparti on 2D Materials
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry at SRM University-AP is hosting a guest lecture. The lecture will feature Dr Rajendra Kurapati who will be speaking on Functionalization Dependent Biodegradation of 2D Materials: Impact on Immune Modulation and Applications. The talk will allow students to explore the biodegradability of 2DMs and the impact of nanoparticle doping\, such as iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs)\, ZnS nanoparticles\, etc. \nHere’s an abstract of the talk and details of the speaker. \nAbstract of the Talk: \nAs the use of two-dimensional materials (2DMs) continues to grow and expand their range of industrial and biomedical applications\, understanding their long-term effects on organisms and the environment is still in its infancy. However\, the biodegradability of 2DMs in organisms by immune cells has been shown to be significant\, especially by the peroxidase enzymes present in the neutrophils and macrophages. In addition\, it is also necessary to thoroughly investigate their metabolite formation by the degradation of 2DMs. Herein\, the biodegradability of 2D materials\, including reduced graphene (rGO)\, antimonene\, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and red phosphorus sheets by interacting with the peroxidase enzymes secreted by the primary immune cells (neutrophils\, macrophages). In addition\, we investigated the impact of chemical functionalization on the biodegradability of GFMs and the impact of nanoparticle doping\, such as iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs)\, ZnS nanoparticles\, etc. High-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM)\, Raman spectroscopy\, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)\, and mass spectrometry (MS) were employed to understand the biodegradation of GFMs and their by-products.1-6 However\, these results indicate that the oxidized (functionalized) graphitic materials can undergo faster biodegradation than the pristine ones. The possible by-products of the biodegradation of graphene materials were characterised using mass spectrometry. Figure/Scheme: appropriate caption. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr Rajendra Kurapati obtained M.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the University of Hyderabad in 2008. He pursued his PhD at the Indian Institute of Science\, Bangalore\, under the supervision of Prof. Ashok Raichur in biomaterials research. Kurapati worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow with Prof. Alberto Bianco at CNRS\, University of Strasbourg. In 2018\, he received the Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship with Prof. Abhay Pandit at CÚRAM\, University of Galway\, Ireland. In 2021\, Kurapati received the prestigious DBT-Ramalingaswami re-entry fellowship hosted by the University of Hyderabad\, India (with Prof. V V S S Srikanth). Since 2021\, Kurapati has been an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at IISER Thiruvananthapuram and works on developing biomaterials for drug delivery and antimicrobial coatings\, including sustainable bioplastic. He has recognised 2025’s rising stars of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research\, which gathers the best work from researchers in the early stages of their independent careers (below 5 years). Kurapati is recognised for his contribution to the investigations of the biodegradation of nanomaterials and the immune cell interactions in the blood and their importance in biomedical applications.

SUMMARY:Seminar by Dr Subrahmanyam Sappati
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a guest seminar on Nuclear Quantum Effects and Photophysics of Low-Barrier Hydrogen Bonds: Implications for Drug and Material Design. The Speaker\, Dr Subrahmanyam Sappati\, Tenure Track Faculty at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biochemistry\, Gdańsk University of Technology\, Poland\, will address the students. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr Subrahmanyam Sappati is an associate professor at the Department of Physical Chemistry at Gdańsk University of Technology. His scientific interests primarily lie in the areas of: Proton transfer mechanisms (Ground and excited state)\, /MM simulations in biological systems\, Nuclear Quantum Effects and AIMD simulations. Dr Sappati is currently working with Prof. Raghunathan V. A\, RRI Bangalore\, on a project entitled “Fluid-fluid coexistence in phospholipid membranes induced by alcohols” in collaboration with Prof. Partha Hazra from IISER Pune. \nAbstract: \nHydrogen bonds with unusually short donor–acceptor distances referred to as short-strong or low-barrier hydrogen bonds (SSHBs/LBHBs) exhibit highly non-classical behaviour that is strongly influenced by nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). These effects significantly modulate the structural dynamics\, optical properties\, and binding interactions of both biomolecules and molecular materials. \nThrough a series of first-principles and path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations\, we demonstrate how NQEs strengthen hydrogen bonds in asymmetric donor–acceptor environments\, enhance proton delocalisation\, and red-shift electronic absorption spectra\, as observed in ellipticine–water complexes. In drug-target systems\, such as the antitubercular drug. Bedaquiline binding to mycobacterial ATP synthase\, SSHBs\, contributes substantially to target specificity and binding free energy\, a property tunable via chemical modifications. In molecular crystals\, including glutamine derivatives and terephthalic acid\, NQEs suppress classical proton transfer barriers\, leading to bond symmetrisation and altered charge distributions. \nTogether\, these findings underscore the critical role of NQEs and SSHBs in tailoring the photophysical and thermodynamic characteristics of complex molecular systems. Recognising and leveraging these effects provides new design principles for next-generation therapeutics and responsive materials. \nJoin the seminar and gain insights on Nuclear Quantum Effects and Photophysics of Low-Barrier Hydrogen Bonds: Implications for Drug and Material Design
