SUMMARY:Prof Puru Jena enlightens on "Beyond the Periodic Table of Elements"
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics\, SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh\, organizes a continual online and offline Lecture Series entitled “Eminent Guest Lecture Series: An Odyssey of Physics” to understand the recent advances and future developments in the field of Physics and allied sciences. The first seminar of this lecture series\, on the theme Beyond the Periodic Table of Elements is scheduled to be held on June 19\, 2021 at 5.00 pm (IST). Prof Puru Jena\, distinguished Professor of Physics at Virginia Commonwealth University\, USA will enlighten and engage the session with his extensive knowledge and expertise in the domain. \nAbstract: The periodic table created by Mendeleev in 1869 is the mother of all materials. The realization that the physics and chemistry of materials at the nanoscale can be very different from their bulk and that their properties in small clusters can be tailored one atom at a time led to the hypothesis\, more than twenty years ago\, that stable atomic clusters with specific size and composition and mimicking the chemistry of atoms can be designed and synthesized. These clusters\, known as superatoms\, can form the building blocks of a new three-dimensional periodic table as well as a new class of cluster-assembled materials. In this talk\, Dr Puru Jena will outline the considerable progress that has been made over the years by focusing on superalkalis and superhalogens\, which mimic the chemistry of alkalis and halogens\, respectively and can be used to form supersalts with uncommon properties. The ionization energies of superalkalis are less than those of alkali atoms while the electron affinities of superhaloegns are larger than those of halogen atoms. He will present examples where these superions are used to promote unusual chemistry making noble gas atoms form chemical bonds at room temperature\, superhalogens forming halogen-free electrolytes in Li-ion batteries\, superalkalis as building blocks of new electrides where the electron is completely detached from the host and remain localized pretending to be an anion without a nucleus\, superhalogens as building blocks of multiferroic materials\, and supersalts capable of enhancing the Curie temperature of 2D materials. The synergy between first principles theory and experiments in advancing our understanding of matter at the nanoscale will be highlighted. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr Puru Jena is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at Virginia Commonwealth University and received his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of California at Riverside. He also served as Program Director at the National Science Foundation and as Jefferson Science Fellow and Senior Science Advisor at the US Department of State. Dr Jena’s research covers a wide range of topics in Nano-structured Materials\, Condensed Matter Physics\, and Materials Science. These include structure and properties of metals\, semiconductors\, superconductors\, alloys\, liquid metals\, point and complex defects\, surfaces\, thin films\, atomic clusters\, and cluster assembled materials. His current research is focused on three major areas: Structure and properties of nano-clusters and cluster assembled materials (0 D)\, nanotubes and nanowires (1D) and mono- and multi layered materials (2D) with emphasis on energy storage; electronic\, magnetic\, and optical properties. Dr Jena is the author of nearly 630 papers including 14 edited books with Google citations and H index at 31\,300 and 88\, respectively. He has given over 425 invited talks in international conferences and academic institutions in 29 countries around the world and has organized 50 international conferences. He has received over $15 million dollars of funding from federal agencies such as the Department of Energy\, Department of Defense\, National Science Foundation\, and NASA. His many honours include being the Fellow of the American Physical Society; Outstanding Scientist of Virginia; Outstanding Faculty of Virginia; Presidential Medallion\, University Award of Excellence\, and Outstanding Scholar from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has served as a member of numerous scientific panels including on the Presidential Commission on bilateral scientific collaboration between USA and Russia. \nWe welcome you to actively participate in this scholarly lecture series on 19 June 2021 at 5.00 pm (IST). SUMMARY:Chairman-AICTE elucidated the changing scenarios of the education sector in the Post COVID era
DESCRIPTION:The Tenth edition of the University Distinguished Lecture (UDL) Series\, organised by SRM University-AP\, expounded on a pertinent problem of the current time\, “Higher Education in India in the Post-COVID-19”. Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe\, Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)\, delivered the Distinguished Lecture\, and Shri Satish Chandra\, IAS\, Special Chief Secretary\, Higher Education\, Government of Andhra Pradesh\, gave a special address. \n\n\nIn his welcome address\, Prof D Narayana Rao\, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SRM University-AP\, set the context of the event\, emphasising on how the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has resulted in the temporary closure of about 1000 Universities and about 40\,000 Colleges in the country\, severely disrupting the teaching and learning process and research activities. The transition to “Learn From Anywhere (LFA) happened overnight and people had to get used to it. National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognises the importance of leveraging the advantages of technology while acknowledging its potential risks and dangers. Online education calls for carefully designing and appropriately scaled studies to determine how the benefits of online/digital education can be reaped while addressing or mitigating the downsides. There is a need to establish a “Digital and online Wing” in the Departments of Education in different states of the country. \n\n\n\nProf Anil Sahasrabudhe in his Distinguished Lecture\, delineated that the use of technology in the education environment has been initiated in the Pre-COVID days. Platforms such as Swayam\, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) came into existence to digitally bring quality education to everyone. Digital education carries a boon that no one can ignore\, i.e. making physical distance irrelevant in education. Digital education has the ability to reach students anywhere and everywhere provided they are equipped with gadgets and internet connectivity. Thus\, the Government of India has undertaken a nationwide project under\, Bharat Net\, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan to connect every corner of India through the internet. Prof Sahasrabudhe accepted that all subjects cannot be taught online\, especially lab-based practical courses that will have the need to attend physical classes. Music\, Drama\, sports\, other performing and fine arts\, which are an essential part of a pedagogical system\, cannot be studied online. Moreover\, a digital class can never replace the bonding humans tend to develop while working in close proximity. However\, it cannot be debated that the education system as we know it has changed. The future of education comes with a blended environment. Fortunately\, National Education Policy-2020 envisioned the change long ago and introduced a relevant policy to ensure the educational growth of the country. Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU)\, Academic Bank of Credits\, National Academic Depository are some of the revolutionary changes that are going to benefit the next generations in the post COVID days. The government has already established National Research Foundations to support mega research projects\, which may need several crores of rupees. Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe emphasised that studying in one’s native language is an essential requirement that NEP looks into. Prof Sahasrabudhe asserted that proper administration\, governance and autonomy are some of the deciding factors for the education sector in the coming days. While concluding his speech\, he further elucidated AICTE’s initiatives towards the advancement of the education sector-Curriculum Revisions\, Project-Based Experiential Learning\, Faculty Training\, Industry Internships\, Students Internship Programmes are soon to be inseparable aspects of the changing education sector. \nShri Satish Chandra highlighted the challenges associated with online education in respect to the state of Andhra Pradesh. 3000 colleges and 17 universities with 12 lakhs students in Higher Education Sector have got affected because of the pandemic. However\, the future of education brings a blended environment with both online and offline teaching-learning options. He opined that LMS\, Online Platforms\, gadgets such as desktops\, laptops or tablets are going to be a part of the new normal of the education sector. The Government of Andhra Pradesh strives to help economically backward students by providing the gadgets at an affordable cost under various scholarship schemes.

SUMMARY:Reimagine\, Recreate\, Restore: World Environment Day Quiz
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable development that curbs pollution and thus prevents the extinction of species from the surface of the earth is the urgent need of the hour. The United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972 to fundamentally raise awareness among people about the importance of ecosystem preservation. Since then\, World Environment Day is observed on June 5 annually with eco-sensitive themes to remind individuals and organisations about their duties and responsibilities towards the gift of nature. \nThis year’s theme: ‘Reimagine.Recreate.Restore.’ marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The Department of Student Affairs\, SRM University-AP is organizing a Quiz Programme for the students on June 5\, 2021\, at 7:00 pm to ensure commitment to the earth’s reviving mission\, as a green and sustainable university. \n“Nature is healing” is a misleading message that has been circulated in the digital world during these Covid-19 pandemic days when human activities are shut down around the world. It is not just a year or a decade since humans have started exploiting\, looting\, and destroying the wildlife\, coral reefs\, deserts\, mountains and more. Let us be a generation that reimagines creative ways to restore our natural resources. \nAll are welcome!

SUMMARY:International Conclave on the Role of Technology for the Sustainable Agricultural Growth for Future Generations
DESCRIPTION:An International Conclave on the “Transition towards sustainability of Agriculture: Role of Technology in Agriculture Supply Chain” is being organised by the Department of Economics\, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences\, SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh on June 3-4 from 9 am. Renowned economists and experts across the world will be joining the conclave to share their thoughts and perspectives on the much-needed topic of this time. Faculty and Scholars are invited to submit the abstracts of their research papers on or before May 25\, 2021. Prof Vijay Paul Sharma\, Chairman\, Commission for Agriculture Costs and Price (CACP) Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer Welfare\, Govt of India\, will grace the conclave with his presence as the Chief Guest. \nThe agriculture and food sectors are facing multiple challenges. With the global population projected to grow from 7.6 billion in 2018 (UN DESA\, 2019) to over 9.6 billion in 2050\, there will be a significant increase in the demand for food (UN DESA\, 2017). At the same time\, the availability of natural resources such as fresh water and productive arable land is becoming increasingly constrained. Production is not the only concern; although agricultural output is currently enough to feed the world\, 821 million people still suffer from hunger (FAO\, 2018). Processes such as the rapid rate of urbanisation also have important implications for food production patterns and consumption. The agri-food sector remains critical for livelihoods and employment. There are more than 570 million smallholder farms worldwide (Lowder et al.\, 2016)\, and agriculture and food productions account for 28% of the entire global workforce (ILOSTAT\, 2019). \nAchieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of a ‘world with zero hunger’ by 2030 will require more productive\, efficient\, sustainable\, inclusive\, transparent and resilient food systems. This will require an urgent transformation of the current agri-food system. Digital innovations and technologies may be part of the solution. The so-called ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ (Industry 4.0) observes several sectors to be transformed rapidly by ‘disruptive’ digital technologies such as Blockchain\, Internet of Things\, Artificial Intelligence and Immersed Reality. In the agriculture and food sectors\, the spread of mobile technologies\, remote-sensing services and distributed computing are already improving smallholders’ access to information\, inputs\, market\, finance and training. Digital technologies are creating new opportunities to integrate smallholders into a digitally-driven agri-food system. In this two-day Internation Conclave\, reputed experts will shed some light by sharing their wisdom with others on the recent challenges and the scope associated with it. Needless to say\, food will always be an integral part of the basic need of humans. In these discussions\, the path towards ensuring enough food supply for future generations will be searched. \nThe Department of Economics\, under the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at SRM University-AP\, is a vibrant unit for teaching fundamental courses (core & electives) in Economics along with allied courses for students across the disciplines. In addition to the Foundation Courses and optional Minors across the departments\, the department ensures that the education imparted is truly multidisciplinary with an excellent programme structure that can cater to the growing market demand for professional economists and policy researchers. At Present\, the department offers B.Sc. (Hons.) and PhD in Economics and will soon offer a postgraduate programme with specialisations in Econometrics\, Finance\, Trade and Development in coming years. \nCall for Papers:\nFaculty and Scholars are invited to submit the abstracts to be presented at the conclave “Transition towards sustainability of Agriculture: Role of Technology in Agriculture Supply Chain” on or before May 25\, 2021. SUMMARY:"Commit to Quit":SRM University-AP celebrates World No Tobacco Day
DESCRIPTION:World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and global partners to raise awareness on the dangers associated with tobacco usage. Following the theme of this year-“Commit to Quit”\, SRM University-AP has organised a seminar to spread awareness and urge university students\, teachers\, and other employees to take a digital pledge to be restrained from using tobacco. The welcome Adress will be given by Dr Lakshmi Rajyam\, Medical Officer\, SRM University-AP. Dr Lakshmi Kiran Talluri\, Medical Officer\, will explain the downsides of tobacco usage as the keynote speaker. He will further guide the viewers with the challenges and strategies associated with quitting tobacco. \nThe programme emphasises the health hazards associated with tobacco use and encourages individuals to adhere to government rules aimed at reducing smoking and other tobacco product use. According to WHO reports\, around 8 million people die each year because of tobacco use. In 1987\, the WHO declared May 31 as World No Tobacco Day to encourage people to abstain from tobacco use for at least 24 hours. The World Health Organization even prohibited advertisements promoting any tobacco product in 2008. Cigarette users\, according to research\, are more susceptible to Covid-19 infection due to the compromised lungs and respiratory organs caused by heavy cigarette usage. \nSRM University-AP commits to encouraging its associates to raise awareness and spread information about the hazards and realities of tobacco usage on World No Tobacco Day under the slogan “Commit to quit.” Dr Lakshmi Kiran Talluri holds the prestigious position of resident medical officer at SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh. He is an experienced medical expert and would provide significant insights to session attendees. Dr Talluri would speak from an expert perspective on the numerous aspects associated with smoking and tobacco intake to educate individuals about previously unknown facts. Therefore\, everyone is urged to attend the knowledge-based session on May 31\, 2021\, at 5:30 p.m.
