SUMMARY:Padma Shri Prof. Shanta Sinha to Deliver UDL#20
DESCRIPTION:The 20th University Distinguished Lecture\, scheduled to be held on February 21\, 2025\, invites Padma Shri Prof. Shanta Sinha\, Anti-Child Labour Activist\, Ramon Magsaysay Awardee\, Former Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)\, and professor (Retd.) Dept. of Political Science\, Hyderabad Central University\, as its keynote speaker. Prof. Sinha’s contributions towards children’s education and child rights have left an indelible mark on Indian society. \nThe esteemed session will be on the topic “Making Education a Reality and Ending Child Labour: Experience of M.V. Foundation.” \nParticipate and hear from the honourable personality. Prof. Sinha’s relentless dedication and inspiring journey will ignite all to strive towards a just and inclusive humankind! \nAbstract \nThe lecture gives an overview of the work of M.V. Foundations in the field of child rights in India. Believing in the principle that ‘no child must work and every child must attend full-time formal day school’ as a non-negotiable\, the M V Foundation (a Charitable Trust) has worked towards withdrawing over 10 lakh children in the 5-14 years age group from child labour; stopping over 20\,000 child marriages and ensuring they finish 10th grade. The Foundation pioneered the program for mainstreaming children to schools through residential bridge courses. 1500 villages where MVF has intervened have achieved retention of 99% of all children in schools up to 10th class. The lecture would highlight the journey of the foundations\, its experiences and achievements. \nThe lecture will further discuss the foundation and subsequent Journey of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR)\, which Prof. Shantha Sinha headed as its first Chairperson and led for two consecutive terms from 2007-2013. The lecture will highlight the issues addressed by NCPCR\, ranging from violation of children’s rights in relation to child labour and child trafficking\, rights of children in areas of civil unrest\, children’s right to education\, the juvenile justice system\, corporal punishment\, child abuse and violence on children; child malnutrition. \nMedia Coverage for the Event

SUMMARY:Understanding the Nuclear Aspects of the Big Bang
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Physics is organising a Departmental Research Seminar on “Nuclear Processes during the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis” on February 05\, 2025. The seminar will be delivered by renowned academician Dr Martin Schaefer\, Department of Theoretical Physics\, Nuclear Physics Institute\, Czech Academy of Sciences. \nTune in to hear from the expert on the phenomenon of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. \nAbstract \nIt is believed that at the early stage of the Universe\, roughly 10 seconds after the Big Bang\, the temperature dropped sufficiently to allow the first atomic nuclei to form. Subsequent nuclear reactions produced stable helium and lithium isotopes and negligible traces of heavier elements. This process is known as the primordial nucleosynthesis of light elements or Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). At the end of BBN\, the specific primordial abundances left an observable imprint in the current Universe. This echo nowadays serves to test the Hot Big Bang theory and the Standard Model of particle physics. An accurate description of BBN nuclear reactions is crucial in studying primordial nucleosynthesis. Nowadays\, reaction dynamics can be calculated by applying highly sophisticated ab initio theoretical methods. In my contribution\, I will discuss how a systematic approach to describing nuclear interactions and ab initio methods might contribute to revealing mysteries about this early stage of the Universe.

Renowned French mathematician\, Prof. Jean-Marc Deshouillers will deliver the keynote session on the topic “Pairwise co-primality of consecutive elements from sequences with polynomial growth.” \nAbstract \nThe study of the coprimality of elements from sequences with polynomial growth (e.g. $(lfloor alpha n rfloor)_n$ or SPS sequences $(lfloor n^c rfloor)_n$ goes back to Evans (1953)\, Lambek and Moser (1955). I shall give a short outline of recent developments obtained jointly with M. Drmota and C. M”{u}llner and with S. Naik. \nAbout the Speaker \nJean-Marc Deshouillers (born September 12\, 1946\, in Paris) is a French mathematician specializing in analytic number theory. He is a professor at the University of Bordeaux. Deshouillers attended the Paris École Polytechnique\, graduating with an engineering diploma in 1968. He received his PhD in 1972 at the University Paris VI Pierre et Marie Curie. In the seventies\, he was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the École Polytechnique\, which moved from Paris to Palaiseau. Deshouillers is a professor at the University of Bordeaux. In 2009\, he was at the Institute for Advanced Study. \nIn 1985\, he showed with Ramachandran Balasubramanian and François Dress that\, in the case of Waring’s problem’s fourth powers\, the least number of fourth powers necessary to express any positive integer as a sum of fourth powers is 19. \nJoin the session and learn from the maestro!
