He is the former Director-General of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). He was the President of Indian National Science Academy (INSA)\, President of Institution of Chemical Engineers (ICE) and also served as President of Global Research Alliance. He is a director on board of India’s several leading companies\, from Tata to Reliance. \nHe is the Fellow of Royal Society (FRS)\, the highest honour reserved for world’s pathbreaking scientists. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng)\, Foreign Associate of US National Academy of Engineering and the US National Academy of Sciences. \nThe President of India has honoured him with Padma Vibhushan\, the second-highest civilian award of India. SUMMARY:Towards building a smartphone-based  system for improving the efficiency of farms in India
DESCRIPTION:Despite the variety of traditional and IT-based agricultural information delivery approaches\, the majority of Indian farmers are not acquiring or provided with actionable agricultural information in a timely and regular manner. A lecture titled “Crop Darpan: Towards building a smartphone-based system for improving the efficiency of every farm in India” will be organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering on September 08\, 2021\, at 11.00 am to address the issue of the lab to the land gap in agriculture. Prof P Krishna Reddy\, from IIIT Hyderabad\, will talk about the eSagu system\, an IT-based farm-specific agro-advisory system field-tested on about 50 field and horticultural crops in hundreds of villages. \nSince 2004\, research efforts are being made at IIIT Hyderabad to investigate the building of IT-based agro-advisory systems to deliver actionable agro-advice to every farm field of India in a timely manner. In this connection\, they have built the eSagu system and village-level eSagu system. They are also currently investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system. The Crop Darpan App is available for cotton and rice crops at Google Play Store and Apple App Store. In this talk\, Prof P Krishna Reddy will share the experiences of building these systems and the future plans. \nBiography of the speaker:\nProf P Krishna Reddy is the head of the Agricultural Research Center and a member of the Data Sciences and Analytics Center research team at IIIT Hyderabad\, India. From 2013 to 2015\, he has served as a Program Director\, ITRA-Agriculture & Food\, Information Technology Research Academy (ITRA)\, Government of India. His research areas include data mining\, database systems and IT for agriculture. He has published about 189 refereed research papers which include 30 journal papers\, four book chapters\, and eight edited books. He is a steering committee member of the Pacific-Asia knowledge discovery and data mining (PAKDD) conference series and the Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA) conference series. He has delivered several invited/panel talks at reputed conferences and workshops in India and abroad. Since 2004\, he has been investigating the building efficient knowledge agricultural knowledge transfer systems by extending developments in IT. He has conceptualized the notion of Virtual Crop Labs to improve applied skills for extension professionals. Currently\, he is investigating the building of the Crop Darpan system\, which is a crop diagnostic tool for farmers\, with funding support from the India-Japan Joint Research Laboratory Program. The eSagu system\, an IT-based farm-specific agro-advisory system\, has got several recognitions including CSI-Nihilent e-Governance Project Award in 2006\, Manthan Award in 2008 and has been a finalist in the Stockholm Challenge Award in 2008 and received PAKDD Distinguished Service Award in 2021. \nJoin this illuminating lecture on September 08\, 2021\, at 11:00 am and gain valuable insights into building a smartphone-based system for improving the efficiency of every farm in India.

Ms Ragini Mathur\, one of the dedicated trainers of Heartfulness Institute\, will enlighten the students on “Refresh (Organizing the Mind)”. \nMs Ragini Mathur started her career as a Government teacher. She later got selected in Central Railways in RE Project. She secured promotion and became Divisional Railway Manager for the Bhopal Region. After taking voluntary retirement from Railway Services\, she worked as an Administrative Office Superintendent. She joined Heartfulness Institute more the two and half decades ago and became a trainer in 2011. The versatile Ms Mathur has also worked as a radio jockey and a casual announcer for Yuvvani Programme in Akashvani. He further urged everyone to dedicate ourselves to the nation by contributing in advancement of science and technology\, especially in the domain of Information Technology\, healthcare\, nutrition\, and agriculture. Dr. D. Gunasekaran\, Registrar\, Wg Cmdr Venkataachalam Sekkappan\, Director-CLM\, Ms. Revathi Balakrishnan\, Assistant Director-Student Affairs and others participated in the ceremony. \nPh.D. students of SRM AP\, D. Lenin babu and Yarramsetti Saisrinu who nobly served the needy during the pandemic were praised by Prof. V. S. Rao and Dr. D. Gunasekaran. In this phase\, students are on a journey to discover themselves personally and professionally as well. To understand and discover the potentialities\, there is first a need to understand self – How the mind works and processes information? How to deal with life’s challenges? How to bounce back in times of adversities? How to make use of opportunities… how to empower and enable oneself to move towards a flourishing life? How to deal with failures? How to celebrate success? \nImportance of Well-Being in Educational Institutions \nHistorically educational institutions have aimed for academic excellence as sole evidence for their success. Now\, there are growing numbers of educational institutions who are now acknowledging the need to develop students in a more holistic way\, with a stronger focus on well-being. Much of this is in recognition of the increasing statistics on psychological distress and mental illness in young adults\, and the realization of the need to take a more proactive rather than reactive approach to mental health. \n‘Well-Being Program’ based on positive psychology and positive education for educational institutions will act as an antidote to the complex emotions college students are exposed to especially in the present circumstances. \nWell-Being: Well-being is an individual’s experience of satisfaction with the ‘past’\, contentment with the ‘present ‘and hope for the ‘future ‘. The scientific construct of subjective well-being can be defined as both a cognitive and affective self-evaluation of one’s life and experiences. \nWell-Being through the Scientific Study of Positive Psychology \nPositive Psychology is a scientific approach to studying human thoughts\, feelings and behavior\, with a focus on strengths instead of weaknesses\, building the good in life instead of repairing the bad\, and taking the lives of average people up to “great” instead of focusing solely on moving those who are struggling up to “normal”. As a field\, positive psychology spends much of its time thinking about topics like character strengths\, optimism\, life satisfaction\, happiness\, well-being\, gratitude\, compassion (as well as self-compassion)\, self-esteem and self- confidence\, hope and elevation. These topics are studied in order to learn how to help people flourish and live their best lives. \nWell-Being and Happiness \nHappiness is “people’s evaluations of their lives and encompasses both cognitive judgments of satisfaction and affective appraisals of moods and emotions” (Kesebir & Diener\, 2008). It is the experience of joy\, contentment\, or positive well-being\, combined with a sense that one’s life is good\, meaningful and worthwhile. \nWell-being and Neuroplasticity \nThe ability of the brain to reorganize itself\, both physically and functionally\, throughout the life due to an individual’s environment\, behavior\, thinking\, and emotions is called Neuroplasticity. It is important to understand that we have the opportunity to take more responsibility for the intentional shaping of our own minds and through that\, we can shape our brains in ways that would enable fundamental constituents of wellbeing to be strengthened. \nWELL-BEING PROGRAM \nWell-being & Young Adults \nIntroducing Well-being in colleges aids students in developing positive self-perceptions and adaptive thinking styles\, learning to set constructive goals and make healthy future predictions\, and building skills to help manage emotions and cope with difficulty. Through this model\, the students’ mental health is supported by nurturing their social\, emotional and psychological skills\, ultimately leading to well-being and happiness of the optimally functioning students. \nThere can be a long list of benefits of which the most important are:\n• Increases engagement.\n• Increases Life Satisfaction.\n• Increases productivity\n• Increases Hope and resilience\n• Reduces and prevents symptoms of depression.\n• Reduces hopelessness.\n• Prevents clinical levels of depression and anxiety.\n• Reduces and prevents anxiety.\n• May reduce behavioral problems.\n• Works equally well for individuals of different racial/ethnic backgrounds \nThe embedding of positive psychology research findings into education best practices—has also been shown to reduce or even prevent depression and anxiety\, increase enjoyment and engagement in colleges\, improve curiosity and love of learning\, and enhance social skills like empathy\, cooperation\, assertiveness\, and self-control\, all of which are correlated with increased academic achievement. \nPositive Education and Positive Psychology Skills will assist colleges to develop and maintain the optimal functioning of students and staff by making them efficient to prevent and cure mental illness\, improve their productivity and life fulfillment\, provide means to nurture their own talent and mainly build hope to deal with any challenges that come their way.

SUMMARY:Department of Chemistry presents "Department Lecture Series"
DESCRIPTION:Department of Chemistry\, SRM University-AP\, Andhra Pradesh is organizing a “Department Lecture Series”. It is a weekly lecture series in which professors/scientists from other institutes are invited to deliver lectures. This online lecture series is planned to promote collaboration among faculty members\, between institutes\, as well as to motivate young research scholars. \nDepartment of Chemistry Lecture Series- 5 \nThe fifth chapter of the “Chemistry Department Virtual Lecture Series” will witness Dr Masilamani Jeganmohan\, Department of Chemistry\, IIT Madras\, deliver a talk on “MetalCatalyzed CH Alkenylation Reactions“. His group has been extensively working on the metalcatalyzed CH bond functionalization reaction for the past nine years. During the course of his talk on 4th August at 11 a.m.\, he would present his observation on metalcatalyzed CH alkenylation of substituted aromatics\, heteroaromatics and alkenes. \nDepartment of Chemistry Lecture Series- 4 \nOn the fourth episode of “Chemistry Department Virtual Lecture Series”\, Prof Pradip Paik\, School of Biomedical Engineering\, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU)\, Varanasi\, India will be welcomed as the guest speaker to conduct a session on “Designing Polymer Capsules for Drug Delivery“. In this talk\, Prof Pradip will be discussing about a series of polymeric nanocapsules and their designing aspect for different applications such as treatment of the genetic disorder\, cancer therapy\, treatment of infectious diseases\, gene therapy\, etc. Attend the session on 31st July at 11a.m. to recognize how these nanocapsules can be used for the effective management of various infectious or tumor diseases where immune-stimulation is paramount for therapeutic application. \nDepartment of Chemistry Lecture Series- 3 \nOn the third chapter of “Chemistry Department Virtual Lecture Series”\, Dr. V. Subramanian\, Chief Scientist\, CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute\, Chennai has been invited as the guest speaker to deliver a talk on the contemporary challenge and ways to mitigate the same. During the lecture “Molecular Docking and Repurposing of Drug Molecules for SARS-CoV-2” to be held on 21st July\, 2020 at 11 a.m.\, Dr. V. During the lecture to be held on 14th July at 11.00 a.m.\, Prof. U.V. Varadaraju will be narrating the tale of development of Li-ion batteries that have revolutionized chargeable electronic devices. Tune in to further recognize the current challenges imposed on the invention and the direction that has to be followed in the future. \nDepartment of Chemistry Lecture Series- 1 \nThe Department of Chemistry\, SRM University- AP\, with immense pleasure\, invites Dr Angshuman Nag\, Associate Professor\, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research\, Pune (IISER-Pune) to deliver a lecture on Tuesday 7th July\, at 11 AM on the topic “Optoelectronic Properties of Perovskite Semiconductor Nanocrystals”. This lecture is part of the Department of Chemistry\, SRM University AP’s “Chemistry Department Lecture Series”. Dr Angshuman Nag received his doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc)\, Bengaluru\, India in the year 2009. After that\, Dr Nag pursued his Postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago\, USA\, and in the year 2012\, he joined IISER-Pune.
