SUMMARY:Upping our A-game with NITTTR Chennai and SRM faculties
DESCRIPTION:The Faculty and Academic Affairs unit is hosting a Faculty Development Program (FDP)\, an initiative of the SRM University-AP Teaching Learning Centre (TLC)\, which was inaugurated on October 25\, 2021\, at 2:45 pm by Prof. V S Rao\, our esteemed Vice-Chancellor who graced the event as the Chief Guest and the revered Prof. Usha Natesan\, Director\, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) Chennai as the Guest of Honour in the occasion. \nThis FDP will be an opportunity to nurture the finest traits that our faculty members have to offer by inviting five faculty members from NITTTR Chennai. Dr G. Janardhanan (Course coordinator)\, Dr P. Malliga\, Dr S. Renukadevi\, Dr V. Shanmuganeethi\, and Dr E. S. M. Suresh from NITTTR Chennai; Dr Balgauruprasad Narayanan (Course Coordinator)\, and Dr Anupama Ghattu from Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) SRM University-AP\, and Dr Rajeev Sukumaran from the Centre for Applied Research (CARE)\, SRMIST will be the resource persons for this event. \nNITTTR Chennai is a Ministry of Education\, Government of India-funded institution. The SWAYAM-MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) courses offered by NITTTR have become very popular among the teachers’ community as easy-to-access resources. \nThe entire FDP will be conducted in four batches and over 170 faculty members of SRM University will participate in it to learn about the latest developments in pedagogical methods and their incorporation in the classroom setting. The events for the first batch will continue from October 25\, 2021\, till November 6\, 2021\, from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm every day coming up to a total of 10 sessions. \nThis Faculty Development Program jointly designed by NITTTR Chennai and SRM University-AP will give our educators the essential tools needed to make every classroom experience an unrivalled growing opportunity for the students. SUMMARY:The Narasimhan Seshadri Theorem and Some of its Ramifications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:The Narasimhan-Seshadri Theorem is one of the spectacular theorems from India in the past 50 years or so. The theorem is more than a deep result but is in a way a philosophy or correspondences and symmetries. The theorem has had an impact on several aspects of mathematics. The theorem has also led to developments along lines that are similar but by themselves are also deep and central. Since the talk is for a general audience\, I plan to give an overview of the theorem\, a few of its big impacts on topology and geometry\, and a few of its ramifications in terms of generalizations.

SUMMARY:Navier Stokes Equations: A Million Dollar Problem
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:On August 8\, 1900\, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about 23 open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. This influenced the decision of a recently formed Clay Mathematical Institute (CMI) to announce the seven Millennium Prize Problems in the CMI Millennium Meeting held on May 24\, 2000. One such problem is the theme of the present talk. Now it is widely accepted that the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid with moderate velocity is described by the Navier-Stokes Equations. Although these equations were written down in the 19th century\, the existing mathematical results are not adequate to unfold the secrets hidden in the Navier-Stokes equations. In this talk\, I shall concentrate on: \n\na brief description of this problem\nmathematical model\na quick look at history\nwhat is known at this point\nsome important approaches\nWhat is possibly needed\n\nFinally\, I conclude the talk with a note on the present state of Indian applied mathematics and whether we are ready to contribute towards this millennium problem.

DESCRIPTION:The second lecture in the Distinguished Lecture Series organised by the Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP will be held on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm. Prof Amiya Kumar Pani from the Department of Mathematics\, IIT Bombay\, will elucidate the lecture on the topic “Navier Stokes Equations: A Million Dollar Open Problem”. \nOn August 8\, 1900\, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about 23 open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. He is well known for his research work in the area of numerical approximations of partial differential equations. His expertise includes construction\, stability\, and convergence analysis of finite element methods\, finite difference schemes\, orthogonal spline collocation methods for free boundary problems\, partial integrodifferential equations\, coupled equations in Oil Reservoir Studies\, evolutionary variational inequalities\, and scientific computations for industrial applications. Professor Pani is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences\, India. He was awarded the Best Young Mathematician for his outstanding contributions to Numerical Analysis\, Partial Differential Equations\, and Industrial Mathematics by the Indian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ISIAM). \nTune in to this intriguing lecture on Navier stokes equations on November 10\, 2021\, at 4.30 pm.

SUMMARY:Multiparameter E0 - Semigroups
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the late eighties\, Powers initiated the study of 1-parameter semigroup of endomorphisms on B(H). This was further studied intensively by many others during the last three decades led by William Arveson. Although from the physics point of view\, 1-parameter theory is the most important one\, from the mathematical perspective it is not necessary to restrict oneself to 1-parameter\, i.e. the half-line [0\, ?) and we could replace the half-line by any reasonable semigroup like convex cones in higher dimensional Euclidean space. One of the nice features is that the basic theory stays intact while there are significant differences between the 1-parameter theory and the n-parameter theory. I will explain one such phenomenon. In particular\, I will define the basic examples of E0-semi-groups\, i.e. the CCR and CAR flows associated to isometric representations of the semigroup P. In the multi-parameter world\, CCR flows need not be isomorphic to its opposite\, a sharp contrast to the one parameter situation.

SUMMARY:Team Sunshine celebrate Children’s day in magnificence
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Day celebrations were held at Nirukonda and Nauluru government schools from Friday to Monday under the auspices of the Student Affairs department at SRM University-AP. The programme named SRM Sunshine\, organised various games and competitions for students from classes one to ten and distributed prizes to winners. The essay writing\, drawing\, running\, skipping and musical chair competitions focused on children and their enjoyment contributing to their cognitive development. \nStudents of SRM University-AP mingled with the children involving them in various games. The tiny tots of Preschool and Pre-primary celebrated the day with much joy and enthusiasm. The celebrations began on Friday\, followed by a variety of fun-filled activities and games planned by the Sunshine team. Children were given chocolates and gifts like crayons\, pencils etc. as a token of appreciation. The event was attended by Ms Revathi Balakrishnan\, Assistant Director – Student Affairs; Dr Abdul Mohimin\, Assistant Director – Physical Education and Mr Narendra Babu\, Manager – Student Affairs. \nEvery year on November 14 India celebrates Children’s Day\, the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru\, India’s first Prime Minister. The day is also known as Bal Diwas. He adored children and once said that children are the country’s future and that they should be loved. Children also adored him and referred to him as ‘Chacha Nehru.’

DESCRIPTION:The 5th installment of the Eminent Guest Lecture Series: An Odyssey of Physics is being brought to you by the Department of Physics at SRM University-AP on November 20\, 2021\nat 10 AM IST. Our eminent guest speaker is Dr M.S. Ramachandra Rao from the Department of Physics\, Quantum Centre for Diamond and Emergent Materials (QuCenDiEM)\, Nano Functional Materials Technology Centre\, and Materials Science Research Centre\, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr Rao is one of the forerunning researchers in Physics in our country and has been invited by the Nobel Committee for Physics\, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences\, to be a nominator in the years 2009 and 2021. He has authored the books “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: Fundamentals to Frontiers” (Wiley) – Textbook. ISBN: 9788126542017 and “ZnO nanostructures and Allied Materials” (Springer). \nDr Rao obtained both his Master’s degree and Doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology\, Kharagpur. Over the course of his 26 years of teaching and research experience\, he has published in over 200 national and international conference papers\, 284 international journals\, obtained 15 patents and four technology transfers\, completed 20 projects\, and delivered over 90 talks. \nDr Ramachandra Rao’s research team incubated a company in IITM Research Park (Kapindra). The company deals with diamond coating for industrial/defence/space applications. It is in the process of developing a product for water purification using diamond-coated electrodes. His team won the 1st prize in the DRDO Dare-to-Dream nationwide contest for their proposal to use diamond coatings in hypersonic technologies. \nAbout the talk: Emergence: Modern Physics to Nanoscience to Advanced and Quantum Materials \nThe beginning of the 20th century has dawned a new era of modern physics with the evolution of a plethora of experimental techniques that include understanding of optical and x-ray spectra\, Rutherford scattering\, Stern-Gerlach experiment that led to the discovery of electron spin\, with simultaneous progress in the fields of superconductivity\, magnetism\, spintronics\, crystallography and the physics of low dimensional systems that in other words is termed as nanoscience which deals with 2D\, 1D and 0D systems. We know that matter is made up of atoms\, atoms make up crystal lattices\, and electronic correlations play an important role in determining the physical properties of materials. I will explain the enormous progress materials science has made and the potential it offers in various technologies. I will talk about the emergence of ‘quantum materials’ and how quantum effects are inherently built-in certain material systems\, for example\, high-temperature superconductors. I will give examples citing potential applications of functional materials and brief about diamond\, the wonder material for futuristic quantum applications.

SUMMARY:Lecture on multiparameter E_0-semigroups
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP is conducting a departmental seminar on November 24\, 2021\, at 3:00 pm. Prof Sundar Sobers from The Institute of Mathematical Sciences\, Chennai\, India will engage the participants on the topic “Multiparameter E_0-semigroups”. \nAbstract of the lecture: \nIn the late eighties\, Powers initiated the study of the 1-parameter semigroup of endomorphisms on B(H). This was further studied intensively by many others during the last three decades led by William Arveson. Although from the physics point of view\, the 1-parameter theory is the most important one\, from the mathematical perspective\, it is not necessary to restrict oneself to 1-parameter\, i.e. the half-line [0\,infty) and we could replace the half-line with any reasonable semigroup’ like convex cones in higher-dimensional Euclidean space. One of the nice features is that the basic theory stays intact while there are significant differences between the 1-parameter theory and the n-parameter theory. I will explain one such phenomenon. \nIn particular\, Prof Sundar Sobers will define the basic examples of E_0-semigroups\, i.e. the CCR and CAR flow associated with isometric representations of the semigroup P. In the multiparameter world\, CCR flows need not be isomorphic to its opposite\, a sharp contrast to the one-parameter situation. \nDon’t forget to join this lecture on November 24\, 2021\, at 3:00 pm which will be helpful to participants who are doing or planning to start a career in the multiparameter E_0-semigroups domain.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of English at SRM University-AP invites you to an engaging webinar on November 26\, 2021\, at 11.00 am. Mr Jairam Ramesh\, Member of Parliament representing the state of Andhra Pradesh\, will be the guest speaker of the day. \nWriting is a process of pain and pleasure. Every writer approaches\, experiences\, and survives it in a unique way. In this talk and interaction\, Mr Jairam Ramesh would share his idea and process of writing. His talk would be followed by an interaction about his latest book The Light of Asia: The Poem That Defined The Buddha (Penguin\, 2021). The talk is intended to be a part of the Department’s larger initiative to organise interactions around “Language and Society” to address all kinds of conversations about language\, communication\, writing\, speaking\, thinking\, and at a deeper level\, about connecting with others. \nAbout the Speaker: \nJairam Ramesh is presently a Member of Parliament and Chairman of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Science and Technology\, Environment\, Forests and Climate Change. He was Union Minister between 2006 and 2014 and held several portfolios including Commerce\, Power\, Environment and Forests\, Drinking Water and Sanitation and Rural Development. He played a key role in global climate change negotiations in 2009 and 2010.
