SUMMARY:The Narasimhan Seshadri Theorem and Some of its Ramifications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:The Narasimhan-Seshadri Theorem is one of the spectacular theorems from India in the past 50 years or so. The theorem is more than a deep result but is in a way a philosophy or correspondences and symmetries. The theorem has had an impact on several aspects of mathematics. The theorem has also led to developments along lines that are similar but by themselves are also deep and central. Since the talk is for a general audience\, I plan to give an overview of the theorem\, a few of its big impacts on topology and geometry\, and a few of its ramifications in terms of generalizations.

SUMMARY:Lie groups as a unifying theme in mathematics: from Algebra and Number theory to Geometry and Topology.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Groups are encountered early on in one’s education. Many groups that one learns already in undergraduate studies are in fact matrix groups with coefficients which can be numbers from finite fields to real and complex numbers or these days p-adic numbers. Such groups\, called finite groups of Lie type or real Lie groups or p-adic groups as the case may be\, have been playing a dominant role in many parts of mathematics. The lecture will be a gentle introduction to some of these topics.

SUMMARY:Gather around! Let’s undo the damage we caused!
DESCRIPTION:“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it” – Robert Swan \nWe live in a world where turning a blind eye to the air surrounding us is never an option. We are constantly reminded of our actions and their subsequent consequences on the planet. Yet many of us are in denial of the widening damages caused by us\, and humanity is using the world’s resources faster than they can naturally recover. World Environment Day is here to kick you out of your comfort zone and push you to pause and reflect on what you have done so far. \nOn the eve of World Environment Day\, the Department of Environmental Science is organising a webinar to discuss topics that need immediate response actions. Dr T V Sajeev\, Senior Principal Scientist\, Department of Forest Entomology\, Kerala Forest Research Institute\, will be delivering a talk on ‘Why did she stop going to school? The case of student roles in saving the planet’. \nDate: June 04\, 2022 \nTime: 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm IST \nAbout the speaker \nDr T V Sajeev has twenty years of service as a scientist in KFRI and twenty-eight years of research experience. He has a PhD in Environmental Sciences from CUSAT. His focused areas of research are landscape fragmentation\, population dynamics of insects\, political ecology\, biological control\, and management of alien species. Currently\, he coordinates a Tree Health Helpline Desk in KFRI to benefit forest tree farmers in Kerala. He has also secured a patent for the development of a biopesticide. \nWorld Environment Day 2022 urges you to celebrate planet Earth through collective transformative actions. Let’s undo the damages we caused! Come listen to what our #OnlyOneEarth has to say.

SUMMARY:Renewing a battle that is worth fighting for
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a motto having the same relevance and emergency even after 50 years of its inception! The slogan for the Stockholm Conference\, #OnlyOneEarth of 1972\, can relate. The theme is as pertinent as ever\, with a lot more amplified concerns. This World Environment Day\, revisit the actuality that Mother Earth is still the only liveable planet we have. Nature conservation is that battle we plot against ourselves only to win back what we destroyed. \nThe reckless devastations can only be nullified through transformative actions which can reset the balance between humanity and nature. Getting out of the denial stage and acting accordingly is the only way to preserve nature for the next generation. A greener\, cleaner\, and sustainable tomorrow will always be a matter of urgency with the escalating environmental issues. \nThe Department of Student Affairs is celebrating World Environment Day to spread hopes and action plans for protecting what we have in order to restore what we lost. The celebration aspires to emphasise and accelerate the thoughts on the predicament situation we are in. As part of the event\, there will also be an awareness rally to foster the essence of the message. \nDate: June 05\, 2022 \nTime: 08.00 AM to 10.00 AM IST \nCome along and renew the pledge to embrace mother nature!

SUMMARY:Fostering an Eco-Conscious Generation
DESCRIPTION:World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th to raise awareness of the dire need to combat the global climate and environmental crisis and reinforce the timeless message that Earth is the only habitable planet. The university commemorated World Environment Day through an awareness rally to instil the importance of environmental conservation among the academic community. Prof. D Narayana Rao\, Pro-Vice-Chancellor was the chief guest for the event and motivated students and the university to facilitate discussions on ways to combat current environmental challenges and urged for environmental conservation. \nThe awareness rally was a great success in spreading the message of environmental responsibility and creating a sense of urgency and commitment among the students to protect and sustain our planet for generations to come. The event fostered a sense of responsibility among participants and renewed their commitment to preserving and restoring the environment. The emphasis on sustainable practices prompted students to reflect on their individual roles in environmental protection. The celebration not only marked World Environment Day but also laid the ground for ongoing initiatives\, ensuring that the necessity and relevance of environmental protection remain at the forefront of collective consciousness for the benefit of future generations.

SUMMARY:Classical concert on Annamacharya Sankeertanas
DESCRIPTION:Tallapaka Annamacharya\, popularly known as ‘Anamayya’\, was a 15th-century saint and the earliest known Indian musician to compose songs called sankeertanas in praise of Lord Venkateswara. His compositions have strongly influenced the structure of Carnatic Music and are still making rounds in various music concerts and performances the world over. \nHaving composed countless odes to Sri Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy\, Annamacharya is widely regarded as the Pada Kavitaa Pitamaha of Telugu poetry. He was a reputed singer and an eminent poet who gave life to the Telugu song and lyricism by blending the Telugu ‘Andhra Vedam’ for the easy understanding of the common man\, with the summary of ‘Sanskrit Vedas’. \nTirumala Tirupati Devasthanams\, also known as TTD\, are on an endeavour to preserve the rich heritage of his compositions. They have set music to over 800 compositions of Annamacharya that have amassed wide popularity among the devotees. We are delighted to announce that the following TTD musicians will be offering a beautiful rendition of Annamacharya’s compositions at our university campus: \nMr M B Loganatha Reddy (Singer) \nMr Srinivasulu (Keyboard) \nMr Bujji (Tabla) \nMr Ramachandraiyya (Shruthi) \nLend your ears to their soothing and heart-warming performance. \nDate: June 8\, 2022 \nTime: 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm \nVenue: Auditorium
